Civil Engineering Dissertations - Archive
ABSTRACT: Recent bridge failures due to hurricane-generated storm surges and riverine flood events have highlighted the vulnerability of bridge infrastructure to extreme hydrodynamic loading. In addition to posing an immediate risk to human life, bridge failures can hinder evacuation planning and emergency response efforts. Changes in flood frequency and intensity due to climate change and urbanization may alter the hydrodynamic conditions along urban streams, further stressing bridge infrastructure designed based on historical flow conditions. As a result, quantifying the structural response and stability of bridges under current and future hydrodynamic conditions is crucial to improving transportation safety and efficiency. This …

Microplastic Risk Characterization Of Plastic Road, Md Shams Razi Shopnil
Civil Engineering Dissertations - Archive
In recent past, the act of waste recycling has been diversified in manifolds across the world leading to evolution of newer recycling technique and fresh recycled product. Albeit plastic is one of those waste materials which is getting extremely difficult to get substantially recycled because of its record-breaking production, consumption, and its wide range of variations in properties ultimately leading to substandard recycling status of plastics globally. This seemingly poor status of waste plastics recycling against the gargantuan amount of fresh plastic products being added to consumer stream gives rise to a menacing one directional problem: Plastic Pollution, which is …

Reuse Of Recycled Plastic For Subgrade Treatment, Jerin Tasnim
Civil Engineering Theses - Archive
Disposal of solid waste becomes a global issue due to it contains a large amount of non- degradable polymers and may lead to many environmental issues. With the scarcity of space for landfilling and due to ever increasing cost, finding ways to handle these wastes without endangering the environment is crucial. One of these methods is to use plastic wastes as one of the pavement materials. In this study, a new method of subgrade soil stabilization of pavement is proposed where soil will be stabilized by mixing only plastic with soil for the treatment of subgrade. In order to demonstrate …

Developing Distributed Real-Time Hybrid Simulation For Dynamic Response Evaluation Of Floating Wind Turbine, Hezha Lutfalla Sadraddin
Developing Distributed Real-Time Hybrid Simulation For Dynamic Response Evaluation Of Floating Wind Turbine, Hezha Lutfalla Sadraddin
Dissertations
Floating wind turbine (FWT) has a significant role in producing clean and sustainable energy in unlimited spaces with more steady wind and less cost. The design, construction, and safe operation of FWTs require a deep understanding of their dynamic responses under combined aerodynamic and hydrodynamic loads. Conventional FWT model experiments utilize wave tanks and wind tunnels. However, laboratory size and capacity and the scaling conflicts between the Froude and the Reynold numbers in these coupled wind-wave loading tests impose challenges to replicate dynamic responses of FWT. Alternatively, real-time hybrid simulation (RTHS), which combines numerical simulation and physical experiment of FWT …

Immobilized Algae For Produced Water Treatment And Desalination, Shibin Nadersha, Ashraf Aly Hassan
Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering: Faculty Publications
Produced water (PW) is the effluent generated during oil mining and extraction. On average, for every barrel of oil, 4-5 barrels of PW are generated worldwide. The presence of various contaminants in PW makes it toxic. Disposal of untreated PW into oceans and water bodies can cause adverse effects on human health and the environment. Taking into account the large volumes of it being generated, and its effects on the environment, proper treatment is required before reuse or disposal. Microalgal treatment is an effective method for the bioremediation and biodesalination of produced water when acclimatized algal biomass is used for …

Construction researchers have made a significant effort to improve the safety of scaffolding structures, as a large proportion of workers are involved in construction activities requiring scaffolds. However, most past studies focused on design and planning aspects of scaffolds. While limited studies investigated scaffolding safety during construction, they are limited to simple cases only with limited failure modes and simple scaffolds. In response to this limitation, this study aims to develop an automated scaffold monitoring approach capable of monitoring large scaffolds. Accordingly, this study developed an automated scaffold safety monitoring framework that leverages sensor data collected from a scaffold, scaffold …
Use Of Harsh-Braking Data From Connected Vehicles As A Surrogate Safety Measure, Nathaniel Patrick Edelmann
Use Of Harsh-Braking Data From Connected Vehicles As A Surrogate Safety Measure, Nathaniel Patrick Edelmann
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
Traffic safety may be analyzed with the use of surrogate safety measures, measures of safety that do not incorporate collision data but rather rely on the concept of traffic conflicts. Use of these measures provides several benefits over use of more traditional analysis methods with historical crash data. Surrogate measures eliminate the need to wait for crashes to occur to conduct a safety analysis. The amount of time required for enough crash data to accumulate can be significant, delaying safety analyses. Similarly, these measures allow for safety analysis to be conducted prior to crashes occurring, potentially calling attention to hazardous …

A Study Of The Constitutive Models Used In Analyzing Dynamic Strain Aging In Austenitic Stainless Steel 304, Mohammad Mohiuddin
Theses and Dissertations
When triggered, dynamic strain aging has a significant impact on the microstructural mechanical behavior of austenitic stainless steel 304 high performance alloy. The dynamic strain aging phenomenon has been shown to cause significant additional hardening in several experimental studies. To effectively predict the behavior of the material, it is required to employ a constitutive model that includes dynamic strain aging. The extra hardness brought on by dynamic strain aging is captured in this study by the proposal of a novel constitutive model (VAS model) for Austenitic Stainless Steel (ASS) 304 high performance alloy. As part of this study, the developed …

Numerical Simulation Of Vibration - Based Piezoelectric Energy Harvester For Shape Comparison, Adriana Rosas
Theses and Dissertations
This work investigates the shape optimization of piezoelectric energy harvesters subjected to mechanical vibration using ABAQUS/Standard software. Three piezoelectric energy harvesters with different dimensions but the same areas were created to identify if model dimensions have an impact on the output voltage. The models were tested at different speeds to create an output voltage. Once the output voltages were obtained, the results were compared with each other to find if shape optimization on piezoelectric energy harvesters has an impact on scavenging energy from mechanical vibrations.
