Turbine Wheels And Water Power, Herman N. Van Devander Dec 1881

Turbine Wheels And Water Power, Herman N. Van Devander

Professional Degree Theses

"A turbine water-wheel is one through which the water passes guided by channels either interior or exterior to the wheel its self and the walls of these channels or guides as they are termed, are placed in such positions, as to impinge the water on to the blades or wheel buckets at such an angle as will insure the greatest efficiency. The guides and buckets are usually curved in opposite directions, and are so placed with regard to each other, that the water enters the wheel with the least possible shock and leaves it with the least possible velocity. Turbines …

Imaginary Functions, Floyd Davis Dec 1881

Imaginary Functions, Floyd Davis

Bachelors Theses

"The imaginary expression which occurs in common Algebra, and in all the higher departments of mathematical science, has been one of the most perplexing problems which the human mind has encountered in any age. It was studied by the early mathematicians and became a field of speculation, but developed no marked results, for it was generally considered algebraically and in the interpretation is a symbol of an impossible operation. But many of the problems arising from algebraic-geometrical analysis involving imaginaries was of such importance to mathematical and physical science that great attempts were made to establish their solution. It was …

Inter-Oceanic Transit, Loren X. Smith Dec 1880

Inter-Oceanic Transit, Loren X. Smith

Professional Degree Theses

"The feasibility of constructing a canal communication between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans and crossing the American Isthmus has been discussed and written on since the time of Columbus but the subject has attained its present popularity only within the last few years. For several years past the press has almost constantly kept the project before the public and the indications now are that in the close of the 19th century some one of the many schemes that has been suggested will be in active operation. There has been various routes suggested for canals with and without locks. This paper …

Location, Construction, And Drainage Of Common Roads, Edward B. Summers Dec 1880

Location, Construction, And Drainage Of Common Roads, Edward B. Summers

Bachelors Theses

To write upon, and do justice to the subject of common roads, it is necessary that one should be familiar with every variety of them. The roads in some of the advanced and highly civilized communities are of a most admirable character; while in the new and thinly populated countries, they are found deficient in nearly all the attributes of good roads. Only a few kinds that may be in some of the most populous districts will be here designated.

Maramec Bridge, Thomas H. Millsaps Dec 1876

Maramec Bridge, Thomas H. Millsaps

Professional Degree Theses

"Bridge-building, as a science, is comparatively of recent date, for relating to now, of what may be called ancient bridges, do we read of them having been mathematical calculations, determining the strains upon the constituent parts of the bridge structure. This very necessary operation seems to have been entirely omitted. This was, probably, because to that time, there had been no thoroughly scientific investigation, of the new and beautiful subject of scientific bridge-building. At the present time, we determine with a minuteness the strain thrown upon any part of a bridge. We are thus enabled to give the proper dimensions …

The first piece of track, which is curved, is a 6⁰ curve, to the right (going westward) and contains 13 chords of 100 feet.

Following this is a tangent of 400 feet. And then in succession: A 10⁰ curve, to the left; 10 chords; a tangent of 100 feet a 10⁰ curve, to the right, 8.5 chords; a …

Limes, Mortars, And Cements, Cyrus G. Emerson

Professional Degree Theses

"Lime, considered as a building material, is not usually regarded as comprehending three principal varieties - viz: Common or air lime, Hydraulic lime, and Hydraulic cement.

The common or air lime, is so called because the paste made from it with water will harden only in air. Lime is made by burning limestone in kilns suitably arranged for that purpose. Two classes of such kilns are in general use; the intermittent or flare kiln and the draw or perpetual kiln."--page 1.
