Comparative Laboratory Evaluation And Field Observations Of A Modified Class I Base, Loren H. Strunk Feb 1958

Comparative Laboratory Evaluation And Field Observations Of A Modified Class I Base, Loren H. Strunk

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

A number of materials and methods have been used in the continuing search for a satisfactory initial bituminous treatment. Towards this end, three traffic bound roads were given initial treatment, in the summer of 1956, with three inches of Kentucky a Standard Class I Base mixture. The large size coarse aggregate -- either No. 36 or No. 48 stone -- in this mixture made the material difficult to work, however, and caused severe segregation during handling. Although a well integrated mixture of the type could have been compacted to about eight percent voids, the excessive segregation left many areas of …

Structural Analysis By Minimum Strain Energy Methods, John B. Heagler Jan 1958

Structural Analysis By Minimum Strain Energy Methods, John B. Heagler

Professional Degree Theses

"Analysis of structure has its conception for the engineer early in his formal education and follows a set sequency from solving for equilibrium in simple beams and free bodies to more complicated solutions for stresses and deflections in multiply redundant structures.

Difficulty arises for the engineer when he loses the sequence of the subject and finds himself memorizing formulas and methods of solution without a clear and concise understanding of the underlying fundamental principles involved in arriving at these formulae and methods of solution.

The Aircraft Structural Analyst finds himself in a relatively new field of engineering structural design. Here …

Effect Of Concrete Shrinkage On Stresses In Reinforcing Steel, C. Raymond Nowacki Jan 1958

Effect Of Concrete Shrinkage On Stresses In Reinforcing Steel, C. Raymond Nowacki

Masters Theses

"Shrinkage is one of four phenomena that are considered as causing volume changes in concrete, the other three being creep, temperature change effects, and possible chemical disintegration. While all four are interrelated, the volume change due to loss of moisture is associated with the term shrinkage. Creep is the time-dependent change in volume resulting from external loads. A rise or fall of temperature will produce an expansion or contraction of concrete but also will affect the rate of shrinkage by increasing or decreasing the rate of moisture evaporation from the surface of the concrete.

In the design of concrete structures, …

A Study Of The Polishing Characteristics Of Limestone And Sandstone Aggregates In Regard To Pavement Slipperiness, William J. Stutzenberger, James H. Havens Jan 1958

A Study Of The Polishing Characteristics Of Limestone And Sandstone Aggregates In Regard To Pavement Slipperiness, William J. Stutzenberger, James H. Havens

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

The coefficient of friction on dry highway surfaces regardless of stone composition and texture has in most cases been at least 0.6 or above. However, some of these same surfaces when lubricated by a small amount of water have given test results dangerously lower. Some interesting theoretical aspects of this situation are presented here along with results from a laboratory study of the fundamental factors affecting tractive friction.

A machine is described for measuring the coefficient of friction between the plane surfaces of four-inch diameter stone specimens and a rubber annulus of slightly smaller diameter. Measurements were made both wet …

An Engineering Soil Survey Of Fayette County, Kentucky, Robert C. Deen Jan 1958

An Engineering Soil Survey Of Fayette County, Kentucky, Robert C. Deen

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

The need for soils data in the site selection, design, construction and maintenance of any major structure is generally appreciated by the engineer. The "rule of thumb" methods often used in developing smaller structures can prove unsatisfactory, or even disastrous, when applied to larger projects.

Spilitic Rocks And Mineral Deposits Jan 1958

Spilitic Rocks And Mineral Deposits

School of Mines and Metallurgy Bulletins

The principal results of research work on spilitic rocks and mineral deposits carried on since 1945 are briefly summarized. Emphasis is placed on the influence of the results on the theories of rock and ore genesis, particularly the change of "philosophy of exploration" based on the existence of hydromagmatic ore deposition. A re-classification of magmatic mineral deposits is offered.

Effect Of Hydrated Lime And Portland Cement On The Physical Properties Of Clay Soil For Highway Base Construction, Judson Leong Jan 1958

Effect Of Hydrated Lime And Portland Cement On The Physical Properties Of Clay Soil For Highway Base Construction, Judson Leong

Masters Theses

"The intent of this research is to determine the change in physical properties of a clay soil caused by the addition of 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10 percent of hydrated lime and portland cement. The effects of these admixtures on the physical properties of the soil were observed by comparing the results of various laboratory tests. The properties chosen for comparison were: (1) liquid limit, plastic limit and plasticity index; (2) shrinkage limit and shrinkage ratio; (3) density and optimum moisture; (4) resistance to penetration; (5) compressive strength and (6) cohesion and angle of internal friction. In order to …

Operational Characteristics Of A Small Sewage Oxidation Lagoon, Karlheinz C. Muhlbauer Jan 1958

Operational Characteristics Of A Small Sewage Oxidation Lagoon, Karlheinz C. Muhlbauer

Masters Theses

"With the rapidly increasing population in the United States the adequate disposal of sewage has become one of the major technical problems which the sanitary engineer has to solve. In most areas it is no longer acceptable practice to discharge domestic sewage or industrial waste products directly into streams or lakes because of the resulting pollution of the water, which may later be used for drinking or recreational purposes. Many larger cities have, therefore, adopted some method of sewage treatment which renders such wastes safe and unobjectionable before they are discharged into a lake or stream. Most of these methods …

Location And Economic Study For Interstate Route Tallahassee, Wilbur Smith And Associates Nov 1957

Location And Economic Study For Interstate Route Tallahassee, Wilbur Smith And Associates

City and Regional Planning -- Florida

The basic purpose of the study was to determine the best location for the construction of an East-West section of the interstate highway. It was prescribed that the work would consist of two basic parts. One had to do with the analysis of travel data, both present and projected, in the determination of the most feasible location of a route based on conventional traffic and highway development factors. The other phase of the work was to deal with economic considerations, especially the economic impact of the proposed routes on businesses located on existing roads and on the central business district …

City and Regional Planning -- Florida

Fully recognizing the need for a comprehensive study of an integrated expressway and arterial highway system for the Tampa Metropolitan area, the State Road Department of Florida, jointly with the County of Hillsborough and the City of Tampa, engaged Wilbur Smith and Associates to develop a Master Highway Transportation Plan for the Tampa Area. The geographic limits of the study area are defined as the city limits of Tampa on the north, Tampa Bay on the west, Hillsborough Bay on the south, and U. S. Route 301 on the east. The development of basic planning data and necessary field studies …

An Investigation Of Compressive Testing Of Concrete, Gilbert R. Williamson Sep 1957

An Investigation Of Compressive Testing Of Concrete, Gilbert R. Williamson

Civil Engineering ETDs

The strength of most materials is affected by the rate of application of the load and concrete is no exception. However, the effect of a varying rate of loading on the compressive strength of concrete has not been too fully investigated. This effect is one of the problems covered in this paper. The first investigation along these lines was done in 1917 by Duff Abrams of the Structural Materials Research Laboratory, Lewis Institute, Chicago. In 1936, Paul G. Jones and F. E. Richart, working at the University of Illinois Engineering Experiment Station, reported the result of their experiments of the …

Ten Rural Highway Base Stabilization Projects, James H. Havens, William B. Drake Aug 1957

Ten Rural Highway Base Stabilization Projects, James H. Havens, William B. Drake

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

During the last week o£ September, 1956, the Division of Rural Highways requested assistance from the Research Division in conducting a series of ten experimental base stabilization projects which were to be geared more-or-less to a practical rural roads development program in which existing soils and local granular materials might be most advantageously treated and stabilized to provide fairly low cost base courses and surfaces, adequate for light rural traffic. The idea of actually constructing a base and bituminous surface for this type of road would represent a refinement over the traditional traffic-bound base type of construction which usually serves …
