ALL market gardeners use seed beds in their gardening programme. However, the basic design of seed beds and covers has not greatly altered over the years.

The availability of cheap good quality plastic materials has now shown the way to improvements in the design of this type of gardening equipment.

A Crush For Tuberculin Testing Of Cattle, A L. Ripper

ALWAYS a useful asset on any farm where livestock are kept, a strongly-constructed crush is essential where tuberculin testing makes it necessary to deal with dry stock, bulls and young animals that have not been previously handled.

The crush described in this article was specially designed for tuberculin testing, but will serve equally well for vaccinating, branding, de-horning or any operation where restraint is necessary.

THE first of the modern type herringbone dairies in Western Australia was constructed by Mr. F. Tucker of Ruabon, in 1957.

Since then there has been strong interest in this system, and there are now at least six such sheds operating in the district between Ludlow and Augusta. Many more are being constructed.

"A closed conduit, such as an overflow pipe for a conservation pond or a sanitary lagoon, will not flow full if laid on a slope that is hydraulically steep unless the pipe entrance receives special attention. A steep conduit slope is necessary to insure that the pipe entrance controls flow.

The recently introduced hood inlet will permit the closed conduit to flow full, even if on a hydraulically steep slope, upon a slight submergence of the inlet crown. The hood inlet is formed by cutting the pipe at an angle so that the crown of the inlet projects beyond the …

The Kentucky Department of Highways, in 1946, sought a more systematic criteria and basis for designing the thickness of bituminous concrete pavements. The Research Division was authorized to pursue this work and to develop the criterion. These efforts were embodied in a report (1) to the Department, which offered a system of design based upon CBR's and EWL's. EWL's were computed originally for a 10-year period but this practice was revised in 1954 to encompass 20-year traffic (more realistic with respect to average road life). This dam will be located on the East Fork of Litle Bear River, just east of Avon, Utah. Many attempts have been made to derive mathematical expressions relating evaporation and evapotranspiration, or consumptive use, to climatological data. IN the United States, the Blaney-Criddle formula is probably the best known for estimating consumptive use (2 and 3). Blaney (1) has also suggested that this formula is suitable for estimating evaporation as measured with a Weather Bureau pan. Other well known formulas are the Penman formulas (10), the Thornthwaite formula (15) and the Hargreaves formulas (8). "The work presented is the investigation of the effect of phosphoric acid on the compaction and shear characteristics of pure kaolin. Pure Georgia kaolin clay average particle size of five microns was mixed with different percentages of phosphoric acid. These mixtures were permitted to react for varying periods of time. The results of the study indicate a notable and gradual increase in dry density of the kaolin with increasing percentages of phosphoric acid admixture. The acid admixture ranges from one up to nine percent of the dry weight of the clay. Increase in cohesion of the clay with increase of …

"This investigation resulted in the development of a means of predicting the discharge of water through an internal spillway type rockfill dam. From the data obtained during the various tests, equations were developed by which the coefficient of discharge for an internal spillway type rockfill dam can be determined when the core height, rock size and head causing flow are known. The equations give results with an error of less than 5%, which is adequate for engineering works"--Abstract, page 2.

"The effect of sunlight on chlorine residuals in water supplies was investigated to provide original and basic information of value to the water purification field.

Three different water systems were employed: (a) The Simplified Water System, (b) The Ground Water System, and (c) The Surface Water System. The RS Sunlamp provided an appropriate source of ultraviolet radiation. A 10 mg/1 chlorine concentration was used. The pH values of 7 and 10 and the illumination intensities of 145 and 200 foot candles were employed. Iodometric determination of chlorine residuals was the main parameter used.

"As a result of some recent failures in reinforced concrete construction throughout the United States, a study was made by several national authorities to find some remedial measures of strengthening existing structures without rebuilding. A system was developed, using high strength steel bands applied externally to beams, to act as stirrups, which has been highly successful. A Study Of The Concrete Making Properties Of Idealite Lightweight Expanded Shale Aggregate, John J. Ahlskog

Among the many commercially produced lightweight aggregates, Idealite seems to exhibit many desirable qualities. According to the available literature, the expanded shale group of lightweight aggregates are capable of producing concrete with excellent structural characteristics, and one researcher found that expanded shale aggregate produced in rotary kilns resulted in the lowest weight aggregates of the ten groups that he studied.1 While having low creep and shrinkage values, Idealite has been found to give strengths equal to or better than that of conventional sand and gravel concretes.

Idealite concretes are also reported to have excellent workability properties.^
