A Study Of The Effects Of Quick Freezing On Saturated Fragments Of Rocks, John W. Scott, George R. Laughlin Feb 1964

A Study Of The Effects Of Quick Freezing On Saturated Fragments Of Rocks, John W. Scott, George R. Laughlin

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

Quick freezing of a fragment of rock which is fully saturated with water is, perhaps, the most rigorous of all tests for soundness, durability, or resistance to weathering. So-called soundness or quality tests employed currently, or heretofore, for evaluating concrete aggregates are usually less rigorous inasmuch as the state of saturation at the outset of freezing is not at a critical level. Hence, the number of freeze-thaw cycles endured by a rock specimen undergoing freezing and thawing in the presence of available water may merely reflect the duration of the exposure before the rock becomes vulnerable to damage -- i.e., …

A Laboratory Investigation Of The Properties Of Coal-Bitumen Paving Mixtures, Gary Grant Howard Feb 1964

A Laboratory Investigation Of The Properties Of Coal-Bitumen Paving Mixtures, Gary Grant Howard

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

The principal objective of this study was to investigate the feasibility of using coal, and to a lesser extent coal mine wastes, as aggregate in bituminous paving mixtures. These local aggregates were laboratory tested in bitumen-aggregate mixtures and, more particularly, in so-called cold-mixes. The bitumen-aggregate mixtures were evaluated by the Immersion-Compression Test, ASTM D 1075-60, with modifications for cold mixtures recommended in the Public Roads Journal (4).

In this initial study, since it was not possible to evaluate all types of mixtures, the primary question of whether coal and its waste products can be used as road aggregate could not …

A Rheological Investigation Of Asphaltic Materials, W. A. Mossbarger Jr. Jan 1964

A Rheological Investigation Of Asphaltic Materials, W. A. Mossbarger Jr.

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

Asphalts, serving as cements or binders in bituminous pavements, behave essentially as purely viscous, mobile, liquids at high temperatures and assume varying degrees of viscoelasticity, plasticity, elasticity, etc., upon cooling. They stiffen to a semi-solid state at cold temperature and do not. exhibit a discrete melting or freezing point, Saal (1)* classifies bitumens into three types according to their rheological properties at normal temperatures. They are: 1) those which behave entirely or almost entirely like Newtonian liquids, 2) those which show elastic effects during initial deformation and which exhibit Newtonian flow thereafter, and 3) those which show almost complete resilience …

Attack The Rabbit At Home : Destroy Warrens And Harbourage, J S. Crawford Jan 1964

Attack The Rabbit At Home : Destroy Warrens And Harbourage, J S. Crawford

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

Effective rabbit destruction often calls for a carefully worked out control programme consisting of poisoning, fumigating and warren and harbourage destruction.

Possibly the most effective means of not only controlling rabbits but ultimately eradicating them from holdings is the destruction of warrens and harbourage.

Migratory Movements Of Emus And Control Efforts, John L. Long, T. J. Tozer

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

ALTHOUGH little data has been recorded on movements or migrations of the Emu (Dromaius novea-hollandiae), it is well known throughout the farming community that some such movement occurs in September and October in most years at least.

Fourth Annual Performance Survey Of Reinforced Concrete Pipe Culverts, Ronald D. Hughes Jan 1964

Fourth Annual Performance Survey Of Reinforced Concrete Pipe Culverts, Ronald D. Hughes

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

A stylized, rational criterion for the structural design and installation of reinforced concrete pipe culverts was developed by the Bureau of Public Roads in cooperation with Prof. M. G. Spangler of Iowa State College and the American Concrete Pipe Association and was distributed to the various state highway agencies, April 4, 1957, as Circular Memorandum 22-40.* The criterion was intended to bring together and simplify methods for computing the strengths required for various fill heights and conditions of bedding. The several highway agencies were urged to adopt the criterion for use on all Federal-aid projects and accordingly, the Kentucky Department …

Calibration Of Irrigation Headgates By Model Analysis, Gaylord V. Skogerboe, Vaughn E. Hansen

Reports

Introduction

The purpose of this research project was to calibrate the slide gates used by the D.M.A.D. Company (Delta, Melville, Abraham and Deseret Irrigation Companies). These gates, which number more than 600, are located throughout the distribution system. Each gate is placed in a concrete box 4 feet wide, 3-1/2 feet deep and 4 feet long. The structure is used as a means of diverting the water and is also used as a measuring device.

A similar structure, but with a different type of slide gate, was calibrated in 1914. At the time rating tables were prepared which listed the …

These crossings must be wide and strong enough to take the biggest farm machinery.

Analysis Of Space Frames By Moment Distribution., Ting-Hwa Wang Jan 1964

Analysis Of Space Frames By Moment Distribution., Ting-Hwa Wang

Masters Theses

"This work presents an analysis of space frames and planar frames loaded in different planes by the method of moment distribution and the theory of superposition. From this analysis it is found that the torsional stiffness of frame members has a great effect on the final bending moments when twisting moments are applied to the frame. The analysis of space frames considering the forces, stresses, and moments in all three dimensions always yields a design more accurate and economical in material than the traditional planar frame analysis"--Abstract, p. i

Investigation Of Zero Sidesway For Rigid Frames, Dolatray S. Mehta Jan 1964

Investigation Of Zero Sidesway For Rigid Frames, Dolatray S. Mehta

Masters Theses

"This study was made to determine the location of a point at which a vertical load may be applied to a rigid frame structure and produce zero sidesway, the so called zero sidesway axis. For concentrated loads equations have been derived for zero sidesway. For uniform and triangular loads graphs showing zero sidesway for various ratios of column and beam stiffnesses and height ratios have been plotted"--Abstract, page ii.

The Effect Of Gap Graded Aggregate On The Properties Of Hot Mix Asphaltic Concrete, Maurice L. Northcutt Jan 1964

The Effect Of Gap Graded Aggregate On The Properties Of Hot Mix Asphaltic Concrete, Maurice L. Northcutt

Masters Theses

"The objective of this investigation was to determine the effects of deviations from the recommended gradation of aggregate upon asphalt concrete mixes. The aggregate used in this study was a good grade Missouri Limestone and was mixed with an asphalt cement of 85-100 penetration grade. A control mix was designed in accordance with the Marshall Method using a gradation recommended by the Asphalt Institute. Ten aggregate blends were prepared by wasting certain fractions or combinations of fractions and the wasted weights were redistributed into the coarser or finer aggregate sizes. The test mixes were designed using the same method and …

The Plastic Behavior Of Beams With Butt Welded Connections., Paul George Hayes Jan 1964

The Plastic Behavior Of Beams With Butt Welded Connections., Paul George Hayes

Masters Theses

"The purpose of this study is to determine the length of butt welds required to develop the full plastic section modulus of a 6 WF 20 rolled section of A-36 steel. The members were electric arc welded with LR 6070 electrodes. Two-point loading was used to develop a zone of pure moment with zero shear where these members were joined.

At the cross-section to be welded, all the flange edges were prepared to receive a single-vee butt weld and the webs were prepared for a double-vee butt weld. In all cases the full length of the flange was welded. However, …

Compaction Characteristics Of Fine Grained Soils., Lewis Clyburn Sowell Jan 1964

Compaction Characteristics Of Fine Grained Soils., Lewis Clyburn Sowell

Masters Theses

"The existing theories of compaction of soi Is are reviewed. The effect of varying the compactive effort on dry density, optimum moisture content, and compressive strength for three fine grained soils is investigated. These samples consist of si I ty clay (CL), plastic clay (CH), and loess (ML). The test results indicate that compactive effort has an important effect on the shape of the moisture density curve and that a potential for over compaction increases with a higher plastic index and c l ay content. At water contents above the Standard AASHO optimum value, the compressive strength is not appreciably …

Stiffness Of Lightweight Reinforced Concrete Beams, Rameshchandra H. Patel Jan 1964

Stiffness Of Lightweight Reinforced Concrete Beams, Rameshchandra H. Patel

Masters Theses

"This work is a presentation of the findings of an experimental measurement of stiffness (El) for reinforced and nonreinforced lightweight and normal concrete. The experimental values of stiffness are compared with values obtained using standard reinforced concrete theory. In all, thirty beams, fifteen for lightweight and fifteen for normal concrete, each having the compressive strength of approximately 4, 500 psi, were tested. In addition to stiffness measurements, a relationship was obtained between the dynamic modulus of elasticity and the ultimate compressive strength at various ages for the particular lightweight concrete used"--Abstract, page ii.

Velocity And Kinetic Energy Distribution Of A Submerged Jet., Patrick Shepard Couch Jan 1964

Velocity And Kinetic Energy Distribution Of A Submerged Jet., Patrick Shepard Couch

Masters Theses

"The velocity distribution in a cylindrically bounded region of water induced by a submerged axisynnnetric jet of water, has been investigated. Velocity profiles at successive levels were constructed. The continuity equation was shown to be only approximately verified by the velocity profiles.

The kinetic energy for each level was computed and given mathematical expression"-- Abstract, p. 2

A Study Of Cation Exchange And Soil Properties, Arthur G. Follett Jan 1964

A Study Of Cation Exchange And Soil Properties, Arthur G. Follett

Masters Theses

“The objective of this investigation is to study the effect of clay content and cation exchange capacity on the liquid and plastic limits of a soil system in the natural, flocculated, and dispersed states. Putnam and Clarksville natural soils found extensively in Missouri and a synthetic soil composed of Kaolin clay and Clarksville fine sand and silt were tested.

The results of the investigation indicate that a general relationship exists between the high cation exchange capacity of a soil and the extreme variances of the liquid and plastic limit values for the flocculated and the dispersed states. The cation exchange …

The Toxic Effects And Fate Of Selected Pesticides In Natural Water., Donald Lee Evans

Masters Theses

"The extensive application of synthetic organic pesticides in the United States has created many problems, particularly with respect to fish life. While a number of investigations have been undertaken to determine the toxicity of several pesticides to various species of fish, a great deal of research work is needed before the problem is completely understood.

The individual toxicities of DDT, BHC, 2.,4-D, and Sevin to western golden shiners were determined by means of the bioassay procedure at a t empera t ure Of 16oc. The four chemicals studied were found to be toxic to the test fish with Median Tolerance …

Effect Of Poly-Ethylene Glycol, A Non-Shrinking Agent, On Strength Properties Of Concrete., Vasantrai Vallabhbhai Desai Jan 1964

Effect Of Poly-Ethylene Glycol, A Non-Shrinking Agent, On Strength Properties Of Concrete., Vasantrai Vallabhbhai Desai

Masters Theses

"This thesis describes laboratory test made on plain concrete cylinders and ~earns for compressive strength, flexural strength, durability and shrinkage, using poly-ethylene glycol (ElOOO) as a non-shrinking admixture. The tests were conducted in the Materials Laboratory of the Civil Engineering Department.

The test results show that poly-ethylene glycol has the effect of reducing the compressive and flexural strength of plain concrete. The admixture also has the effect of reducing shrinkage, and reversing it, causing expansion with large percentage of its use. For the number of cycles of alternate freezing and thawing reported the admixture did not have any effect on …

A Study Of The Stabilization Of Putnam Silt Loam With Large Organic Cations, George C. Bennett Jr. Jan 1964

A Study Of The Stabilization Of Putnam Silt Loam With Large Organic Cations, George C. Bennett Jr.

Masters Theses

"Laboratory tests were conducted to determine if Aliquat, a quaternary ammonium chloride compound, could be used to change the physical properties of Putnam silt loam. The effects of adding varying amounts of Aliquat to the soil were measured in terms of the results of Atterberg limits tests, the moisture-density relationship, unconfined and triaxial compressive strength, and capillary adsorption characteristics. A small change in the Atterberg limits, the optimum moisture content, and the maximum dry density was noted. An increase in the unconfined compressive strength and a reduction in the moisture adsorption potential was accomplished by the addition of 0.25 and …

"The objective of this investigation was to study the effect of the static compaction effort upon the physical and mechanical properties of asphalt concrete hot mixes. To study the effect of the static compaction upon the physical properties of the asphalt mixes, six mixes were prepared using hard, well graded crushed limestone as an aggregate, blended with an 85-100 penetration grade asphalt cement. The control mix was prepared and tested in accordance with the Marshall method for mix design. The other five mixes were prepared and tested using the same procedures of Marshall except for compaction, where five different static …

Effect Of Hydroxyethyl Cellulose On Properties Of Concrete At Early Ages., Vipinchandra R. Shah Jan 1964

Effect Of Hydroxyethyl Cellulose On Properties Of Concrete At Early Ages., Vipinchandra R. Shah

Masters Theses

"In this investigation, hydroxyethyl cellulose was used as an admixture in plain concrete. The admixture was tested for its effect on the compressive strength of plain concrete cylinders and for its effect on the flexural strength of plain concrete beams. Specimens were also tested for freeze-thaw durability and shrinkage.

The test results indicated that hydroxyethyl cellulose has the effect of increasing the compressive strength and decreasing the flexural strength of plain concrete. The rapid freezing and thawing tests showed that the durability increases with increase in amount of admixture.

The tests were carried out in the Materials Laboratory of the …

Determination Of Transient Temperature Stresses In Plates, Teh Yu Hu Jan 1964

Determination Of Transient Temperature Stresses In Plates, Teh Yu Hu

Masters Theses

“The purpose of this thesis is to determine the transient temperature stresses in two-dimensional plate structures restrained against rotation at the ends but not restrained against elongation. In this investigation, only one-dimensional heat flow is considered. The heat flow is first treated as a problem in pure conduction and then the effects of convection through a boundary layer are considered.

The differential equation of transient heat conduction is solved by Fourier series and Duhamel’s theorem, and a graphical method of solution for temperatures in terms of dimensionless parameters is presented.

Solution of this problem is valid for a semi-infinite plate …

The Effect Of Plastic Deformations On Grain Boundaries., Jayendra Jamnadas Shah Jan 1964

The Effect Of Plastic Deformations On Grain Boundaries., Jayendra Jamnadas Shah

Masters Theses

"The purpose of this study is to determine the effect of the plastic deformations on the grain boundaries and the grain structure of mild steel. Five beams tested were of A-36 steel and of 6 WF 20 rolled section. Central loading was used to develop a plastic tinge at the cent1:1r.

At the center, where a plastic hinge was formed, the effect of the plastic deformations on the grain structure was severe in all the samples taken from the tension side of all plastically or partially plastically loaded beams. In fully plastically loaded beams this effect had spread on both …

Effect Of Internal Pressure On Compressive Buckling Stress Of A Cylindrical Shell Under Eccentric Loading, Chao-Ping Chu Jan 1964

Effect Of Internal Pressure On Compressive Buckling Stress Of A Cylindrical Shell Under Eccentric Loading, Chao-Ping Chu

Masters Theses

“In this paper, an investigation was made of a thin- walled cylindrical shell under compressive load with various eccentricities and internal pressures to study the effect of the internal pressure on the compressive buckling stress of the shell.

So far, theoretical methods have not been devised to solve this problem; therefore, an experimental study was carried out. The experimental results indicated that the buckling load of the shell decreases as the eccentricity increases, that the buckling stress increases as the eccentricity increases, and that the change in buckling stress increases with an increase of internal pressure and is very nearly …
