Tests On Light Gage Steel Diaphragms, George Winter, T. V. S. R. Apparao Dec 1966

Tests On Light Gage Steel Diaphragms, George Winter, T. V. S. R. Apparao

CCFSS Library (1939 - present)

This report supplements and extends the scope of Report No. 319, ;lStructural Performance of Light Gage Steel Diaphragms", by Dr. Larry D. Luttrell. Eleven static load tests were conducted on 22 gage narrow rib roof decks to investigate the effect of length of the diaphragm, type of welding, and diaphragm material tensile properties on the shear stiffness and strength of the diaphragm. The behavior of a diaphragm under reversed load at two different levels) one at 0.4 x ultimate static load and the other at 0.6 x ultimate static load was explored by conducting five tests. The tests at a …

Method Of Test For Strength Parameters Of Soils By Triaxial Compression Tests, Robert C. Deen Oct 1966

Method Of Test For Strength Parameters Of Soils By Triaxial Compression Tests, Robert C. Deen

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

This method of testing enables the determination of the strength parameters of soils. The methods described are the consolidated undrained triaxial compression test--with or without pore pressure measurements--and the unconfined compressive strength test. The parameters obtained are the angle of internal friction, ∅, the cohesion, c, and the unconfined compressive strength. The values so obtained may be employed in the design and analysis of earth structures--with consideration of the accepted criteria of stability and safety.

Interim Performance Report Experimental Use Of Thermoplastic Pavement-Striping Materials, John W. Scott Sep 1966

Interim Performance Report Experimental Use Of Thermoplastic Pavement-Striping Materials, John W. Scott

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

The purposes and objectives of this study are: 1) to evaluate the application and performance characteristics of hot-melt plastic, pavement-striping materials which are presently prominent and known commercially as "Catatherm" and "Perma-Line"; 2) to compare the performance of these materials with the performance of painted stripes applied and renewed according to the current practices of the Kentucky Department of Highways; and 3) to evaluate the economics of these striping materials in terms of cost per mile per day of useful life. The project is described more fully in the "Proposal ... " (approved by Division Engineer, September 7, 1962) and …

Class I Bituminous Mixtures, Robert L. Florence Sep 1966

Class I Bituminous Mixtures, Robert L. Florence

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

The attached report reflects the degree of excellence sought in bituminous concrete pavements in Kentucky during the past several years. In the evolvement of the present state of the art, idealized concepts of mixture design have been dutifully tempered with practical considerations, experience factors, and performance features which may not be altogether apparent from this report alone. In substance, the study has been concerned with aggregate gradations, construction operations, and quality of the pavement surface. The achievement of gradation control in the dust of filler sizes has provided opportunities to further optimize mixture requirements. Permissive blending of sands has enabled …

Stability Analyses Of Earth Masses, Robert C. Deen, Gordon D. Scott, W. W. Mcgraw Sep 1966

Stability Analyses Of Earth Masses, Robert C. Deen, Gordon D. Scott, W. W. Mcgraw

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

During the past few months (January, 1966, to the present) the Division of Research has been called upon to make site investigations and analyses of foundation and slope stability at several locations in the State. These requests have emanated from various offices and divisions of the Department. Some of these investigations involved considerable effort and time to perform the subsurface exploration and to analyze the problem so that recommendations could be made. These investigations were of significant magnitude and are being summarized in this report.

Mineralized Springs In Utah And Their Effect On Manageable Water Supplies, James H. Milligan, Ray E. Marsell, Jay M. Bagley Sep 1966

Mineralized Springs In Utah And Their Effect On Manageable Water Supplies, James H. Milligan, Ray E. Marsell, Jay M. Bagley

Reports

Need and Importance of Study

Water demands in Utah are continuously increasing. It is essential that these demands be me to insure the continued enhancement of the social and economic well-being of all sectors of our society. Since water needs must be met from a relatively fixed water supply it is imperative that supplies be managed for complete utilization in such a way that all legitimate requirement scan be satisfied.

As our available water supplies are used more completely by making a given supply satisfy more than one use, water quality problems become more pronounced. The multiplicity of uses to …

Engineering Properties Of Kentucky Soils, Robert C. Deen Aug 1966

Engineering Properties Of Kentucky Soils, Robert C. Deen

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

Soils maps, and particularly engineering soil maps, are proving to be desirable in the planning and design stages of many types of structures and land developments. Engineers and community planners, and even administrators, are becoming increasingly appreciative of such information during the very earliest stages of planning and site selection. Problems associated with foundations, drainage, and soil behavior may be recognized early through the use of adequate soil maps.

At present there is no single source of information which presents the engineering characteristics of the soils of Kentucky. When such information is desired, detailed onsite investigations are made. When such …

Wave-Propagation Studies In Confined Sands., Warren J. Baker May 1966

Wave-Propagation Studies In Confined Sands., Warren J. Baker

Civil Engineering ETDs

An experimental study of the relationship between pertinent wave=propagation parameters and the one-dimensional stress-strain behavior of two sands was conducted. The stress-strain relation for the sands was characterized by a nonlinear strain-hardening behavior. The nature of the stress-chain curve implies that shocks should form or be sustained in the soil. This phenomenon was studied by observing the dynamic and kinematic characteristics generated by a soft-fronted stress pulse applied to one end of a long slender sample of confined sand. To develop a method of predicting the kinematics of wave propagation from the stress-strain curve, the observed wave-propagation parameters were related …

An Experimental Investigation Of The Continuous Penetration Of A Blunt Body Into A Simulated Cohesionless Soil., John Lewis Colp May 1966

An Experimental Investigation Of The Continuous Penetration Of A Blunt Body Into A Simulated Cohesionless Soil., John Lewis Colp

Civil Engineering ETDs

The penetration of one object into a larger mass may well have been one of the earliest interests of man. History shows that early man was well aware of the occurrence of the penetration event by his use of spears and other projectiles in his search for food. Interest in penetration events has been continuous through man's development. Today this interest has even outstripped man's natural environment to include the serious study of penetration into extra-terrestrial bodies such as the lunar surface.

The Problem:

The penetration of many materials is currently being studied by many investigators. Some of the materials …
