Preliminary Indicators Of Income/Wealth Redistribution Associated With Bureau Of Reclamation Projects, Reed Willis, Allen Lebaron, Herbert Fullerton Oct 1970

Preliminary Indicators Of Income/Wealth Redistribution Associated With Bureau Of Reclamation Projects, Reed Willis, Allen Lebaron, Herbert Fullerton

Reports

Social well-being is an accepted subset of water investment feasibility criteria. Our attempt is to isolate income redistribution impacts conferred by the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation projects. Four project sites have been utilized to yield both pre and post project estimates of farm income and wealth. Production functions of the Cobb-Douglas type were estimated to yield information about factor shares, and thus enable inferences to be made about distribution of total product. Lorenz curves were developed to show changes in distribution of wealth and net income in terms of family enterprise, per acre, and per irrigated acre. Listing of individual …

Development Of Specifications For Reflex-Reflective Materials, Ronalds L. Rizenbergs Oct 1970

Development Of Specifications For Reflex-Reflective Materials, Ronalds L. Rizenbergs

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

Evolutionary changes in highway design, automobiles and retro-reflective products prompted Kentucky to undertake a study to update specification requirements for signing materials, delineators and coating compounds. The study was primarily concerned with geometric relationships between the driver, headlamps and traffic signs; investigation of reflectivity, color, durability and other properties of available reflective materials; adoption of testing apparatus to measure material properties; and development of test procedures.

A review of specific sign viewing conditions on the road indicated the appropriateness of reflectivity testing at 0.5-degrees and 0.2-degrees angles of divergence. These angles, however, limit examination of materials at viewing distances in …

Experimental Sand-Asphalt Surface, Robert L. Florence, Herbert F. Southgate Oct 1970

Experimental Sand-Asphalt Surface, Robert L. Florence, Herbert F. Southgate

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

Wearing surfaces of Kentucky rock asphalt applied in thin layers were used extensively in Kentucky for many years. Sand asphalts, which generically include rock asphalt, are now a reemergent generation of surfacings to be investigated (1,2,3). An interim report (4) related the construction and interim performance of trial surfacings in Logan County. Two bridge deck sand-asphalt surfacings have been reported (5). This report covers sand-asphalt construction and performance since 1966. Pertinent project data and comments are contained in Appendix A. The several Special Provisions are included in Appendix B.

Interest in sand-asphalt wearing surfaces issues from the skid-resistant qualities which …

Prediction Of Hugoniots For Soil Using The Theory Of Mixtures., Robert O. Davis Jul 1970

Prediction Of Hugoniots For Soil Using The Theory Of Mixtures., Robert O. Davis

Civil Engineering ETDs

An analytic derivation for the constitutive relation governing the response of soil to high intensity shock loading is presented. The derivation is based on the contemporary theory of mixtures. Soil is envisioned as a three component mixture (solids, water, and air) and jump equations for each of the components are derived. Mass, momentum, and energy transfer between the various components is allowed and it is assumed that the solid and water components obey a Mie-Gruneisen equation of state. A mixture Hugoniot is developed and compared with published experimental results.

An Experimental Study Of Lateral Soil Pressures And Moments On Flexible Sheet Piles, James H. Donahue Jul 1970

An Experimental Study Of Lateral Soil Pressures And Moments On Flexible Sheet Piles, James H. Donahue

Civil & Environmental Engineering Theses & Dissertations

In order to study the effect compaction has on lateral earth pressures exerted on and bending moments in steel sheet pile bulkheads, an experimental study was undertaken which employed the placement of a non-cohesive soil at two specific densities against three model piles of varying thicknesses. The soil was placed both in a loose and a dense state and the bending strains and deflections of the sheet piles were measured at various stages of backfill. Surface loadings were then placed after completion of the backfilling to observe the effects these loads had on the bending moments. The results of the …

A Study Of Elasto-Viscous Material Under Moving Rigid Wheel, Sou-Nan Wang

Civil & Environmental Engineering Theses & Dissertations

This thesis is considered as the solution of interaction between aircraft wheel and soil under landing of airplane. After treating soil as elasto-viscous material, we get a set of non-linear differential equations, such as momentum equations, in viscous region.

A numerical method, Marker-and·-Cell (MAC) method, was used to solve these equations. All data and curves are obtained by using CDC 6600 computer.

Replication Of Eye-Bars And Measurement Of Losses In Cross Section Due To Corrosion, Assaf S. Rahal, J. R. Philpot Jul 1970

Replication Of Eye-Bars And Measurement Of Losses In Cross Section Due To Corrosion, Assaf S. Rahal, J. R. Philpot

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

Recent availability of high pressure water blasters made it possible to remove rust accumulated between the eye-bars near pin connections on the Central Bridge (Figure 1) over the Ohio River at Newport. Previously, they had never been thoroughly cleaned. Cleaning of two connections on a trial basis enabled an inspection between the bars. It was apparent then that the deterioration was critical enough to necessitate examination of the several bar groups and to accurately measure their least cross sections.

The Research Division undertook the task of replicating and measuring the bars. Figures 2 and 3 show one set of bars …

The Dynamic Pressure Distribution And Rigid Body Response Of A Small Buried Dome Subjected To An Airblast-Induced Loading., Richard Cramond

Civil Engineering ETDs

A 9 inch in diameter rigid hemispherical dome was buried in the bottomless soil bins of a vertical shock tube. The interior diameter of the soil bins was 22-3/4 inches, with the interior wall being covered with a friction reducing membrane. An airblast was generated so as to strike the soil perpendicular to the soil surface. The peak reflected pressure of this airblast averaged 315 psi throughout the fourteen tests with the dome. Instrumentation measured the air pressures at the soil surface, the free-field soil stress above and below the dome, the radial on-structure stress on the dome, the rigid …

Median Design And Accident Histories, Gordon R. Garner Apr 1970

Median Design And Accident Histories, Gordon R. Garner

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

The purpose of this study was to provide information concerning the accident histories of various median types to verify minimum requirements for width and cross section. Previous accident studies failed to disclose significant relationships between median width and accident rates. Those studies did not recognize or control several important variables that were controlled in the present study. The efforts here are to compare median types on rural, four-lane, fully controlled access facilities with similar geometries other than median types. An attempt was made to account for some of the Variability in the accident data. Thus, this study gives information on …

Legal Aspects And Guidelines Pertaining To Drainage Of Surface Waters, D. W. Mclellan Jr., Victor Fox Apr 1970

Legal Aspects And Guidelines Pertaining To Drainage Of Surface Waters, D. W. Mclellan Jr., Victor Fox

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

A previous study ("Research Relating to State Highway Laws", reported January 1967) afforded us an opportunity to review a vast array of literature and statutory law pertaining to enabling legislation and administrative authority to construct and maintain highways. It was surprising to find that the statutes are void of guidance on certain subjects: there are great "bodies" of unwritten or non-statutory laws which are referred to as "common law" and "civil law", which are deeply rooted in the past; many are doctrinal or equitable; many are extraordinary and argumentative -- they should not be confused with Civil Procedure. They have …

Pavement Slipperiness Studies, James L. Burchett Jr., Ronalds L. Rizenbergs Mar 1970

Pavement Slipperiness Studies, James L. Burchett Jr., Ronalds L. Rizenbergs

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

Studies of pavement skid resistance in Kentucky have been in progress since 1956. In 1964, an extensive investigation into the use of an automobile as a testing tool was undertaken and an interim standard method of test was selected. Since then, investigations with the device have continued, both to facilitate meaningful interpretation of skid-test data and to evaluate the skid resistance performance of pavement surfaces.

Variables associated with the testing device, procedures and pavement surfaces were investigated. Several paving projects were tested to determine the number of sites required to obtain a representative result. It was found that on most …

Closed Conduit To Open Channel Usu Stilling Basin, Gordon H. Flammer, Gaylord V. Skogerboe, Chi-Yuan Wei, Hameed Rasheed

Reports

Criterion have been developed for designing a stilling basin to serve as a transition from closed conduit flow to open channel flow for a fully submerged pipe outlet. The unique feature of the stilling basin is the short-pipe energy dissipater so located and designed as to provide maximum energy dissipation for the basin configuration. The expanding characteristics of a submerged jet were used in establishing the length of the stilling basin. The unsteadiness of the water surface and the relative boil height in the model basin were used as the criteria for evaluating the effectiveness of the structure for energy …

Interior Corrosion Of Structural Steel Closed Sections, American Iron And Steel Institute Feb 1970

Interior Corrosion Of Structural Steel Closed Sections, American Iron And Steel Institute

CCFSS Library (1939 - present)

A survey of light poles, water-tank stanchions, orthotropic deck bridges, marine tubular catwalks, davits and welded steel columns strongly suggests, contrary to some beliefs, that interior surfaces of closed steel sections rust but little in the atmosphere, even when not fully sealed. Only light rusting occurs because amounts of oxy'gen and water in entrapped air are limited and condensation necessary for rusting is infrequent. Computations based on the oxidation reaction taking into account inside surface, volume of entrapped air, relative humidity and air changes show that the loss of iron thickness due to such rusting is negligible. Use of closed …
