Laboratory Evaluations Of Stabilized Flue Gas Desulfurization Sludge (Scrubber Sludge) And Aggregate Mixtures, Mark Anderson, Gary W. Sharpe, David L. Allen, Herbert F. Southgate, Robert C. Deen Jan 1985

Laboratory Evaluations Of Stabilized Flue Gas Desulfurization Sludge (Scrubber Sludge) And Aggregate Mixtures, Mark Anderson, Gary W. Sharpe, David L. Allen, Herbert F. Southgate, Robert C. Deen

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

The Kentucky Transportation Research Program has completed a laboratory study involving the use of flue gas desulfurization sludge (scrubber sludge) for potential application as a highway subbase and/or embankment material. Scrubber sludge is a waste produet formed when fly ash (and other residue) is combined with a lime dust slurry filter cake and stabilized with quicklime (calcium oxide). Samples of stockpiled (field) sludge and dry sludge components were obtained from the Robert Reid Station (Big Rivers Electric Corporation) in Sebree, Kentuclty. Dry sludge components (fly ash, filter cake, and quicklime) were uaed to prepare sludge samples in the laboratory, allowing …

Traffic Accident Rates In Kentucky (1983), John M. Salsman, Kenneth R. Agent Jan 1985

Traffic Accident Rates In Kentucky (1983), John M. Salsman, Kenneth R. Agent

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

In this study, two types of accident rates were determined. First, accident rates were calculated based on 1983 data. Secondly, the 1983 data were combined with the 1980, 1981, and 1982 data to calculate long-term accident statistics to reflect a four-year average.

Comparison of 1983 to combined 1980 through 1982 rates show that the rates have remained remarkedly stable. Several methods of classifying highways were used when determining average rates. Average and critical accident rates were calculated for use in the high-accident location identification program. Also, average and critical numbers of accidents were determined.

Comparison Of Contained Rock Asphalt Mat (Cram) With Conventional Asphaltic Concrete Pavements, Herbert F. Southgate, David L. Allen, Robert C. Deen Jan 1985

Comparison Of Contained Rock Asphalt Mat (Cram) With Conventional Asphaltic Concrete Pavements, Herbert F. Southgate, David L. Allen, Robert C. Deen

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

A brochure proposing the use of "Contained Rock Asphalt Mat" (CRAM) provided a comparison of stress distributions throughout a CRAM structure (Figure 1) as compared to a conventional pavement (Figure 2). Experience has indicated that stress distributions do not always present the most sensitive or appropriate analysis of a pavement structure. Distributions of strains, and more particularly "work", are better indicators of load distributions throughout a pavement structure and subsequent performance.

Evaluation Of Truck Escape Ramps, Jerry G. Pigman, Kenneth R. Agent Jan 1985

Evaluation Of Truck Escape Ramps, Jerry G. Pigman, Kenneth R. Agent

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

Out-of-control vehicles on steep grades have the potential for and frequently do result in severe accidents. There are two truck escape ramps in Kentucky, and both were constructed as a result of severe accidents and the potential for additional accidents.

One escape ramp is on the Hyden Spur (KY 118) in Leslie County. Because of geometric conditions of the highway and topographic constraints, an arrester-type escape ramp was designed with pea gravel as the arrester material. The beginning of the ramp is a 386-foot paved section on an 8-percent downgrade; followed by a gravel bed 520 feet long on a …

Transient Flow Inverse Study Calculation Of Unsaturated Permeability Of Wood, Farid Piroozmandi Jan 1985

Transient Flow Inverse Study Calculation Of Unsaturated Permeability Of Wood, Farid Piroozmandi

Dissertations and Theses

One of the major processes in lumber industry is wood drying. This process consumes large amounts of energy and capital, and due to the length of time it takes, it acts as a governing factor in lumber production levels. Development of improvements in processes and equipment used in wood drying can be expedited through computer simulation of various drying procedures. These numerical simulations depend on the accuracy of numerical models representing wood transport properties, including functional dependency of liquid permeability through wood with respect to local saturation level. Data available in the literature mainly represent wood permeability properties at fully …

Evaluation Of Miramat Under High Velocity Flows, C. Earl Israelsen, Frank W. Haws Jan 1985

Evaluation Of Miramat Under High Velocity Flows, C. Earl Israelsen, Frank W. Haws

Reports

Introduction: Newly constructed earth channels and steep cut and fill slopes on construction projects need temporary protection from water erosion until a protective cover of vegetation can be grown. In some instances the temporary protective measures can be left in position to serve as part of the permanent system. Various kinds of vegetative and chemical mulches are available for use as temporary control measures, and other materials such as jute, fiberglass roving, and excelsior blanket are also in use. However, for large volumes of flow and for high velocities, more substantial materials are required. One class of such materials is …

The Effect Of The Degree Of Saturation On The Permeability Of A Compacted Clay To Organic Permeants, Mark Alan Harms Jan 1985

The Effect Of The Degree Of Saturation On The Permeability Of A Compacted Clay To Organic Permeants, Mark Alan Harms

Masters Theses

"Relationships for permeability of kaolinite versus degree of saturation and permeability versus flow are developed for 0.005 N calcium sulphate, xylene and aniline permeants using the triaxial flexible wall permeameter. The clay was statically compacted at degrees of saturation of 50%, 75% and 100%. A gradient of 277 was used for the permeability tests.

The initial degree of saturation was inversely related to the permeability of the clay. Saturated clay samples were found to be virtually impervious to aniline and xylene. As the degree of saturation decreased, the permeability increased with the initial volume of flow equivalent to the volume …

Least Tern Anp Piping Plover Biological Assessment Missouri River Bank Stabilization O&M Jan 1985

Least Tern Anp Piping Plover Biological Assessment Missouri River Bank Stabilization O&M

United States Army Corps of Engineers, Omaha District

The Omaha District Corps of Engineers proposes to undertake maintenance of bank stabilization structures and streambank erosion control structures along the Missouri River.  One project would involve about 50 repairs of revetments, hardpoints, and refusals along the Missouri National Recreational River (MNRR) reach, Gavins Point Dam to Ponca, Nebraska (river mile 810-750).  The second project would involve about 250 repairs of dikes and revetments along the navigation channel from Florence Bend through Rulo Bend (river miles 627-498).

The interior least tern is being Federally listed as an endangered species.  The tern has a history of use of the Missouri River, …

Optimal Regional Potentiometric Surface Design: Least Cost Water Supply/Sustained Groundwater Yield, Richard C. Peralta, Paul J. Killian

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications

A distributed parameter groundwater management model utilizing quadratic programming to develop an optimal regional steady-state potentiometric surface and its sustained groundwater withdrawal strategy is presented. It minimizes the regional cost of attempting to satisfy the water needs of each finite-difference cell (a) from groundwater and diverted surface water or (b) from groundwater and reduction of water needs achieved by reducing production acreages. Groundwater elevations, withdrawal and recharge are constrained, satisfying legal and hydrologic constraints. The technique is applicable for assuring a regional sustained yield of groundwater in a conjunctive water management setting. It represents the first application of optimization in …
