Investigation Of Premature Cracking On The National Turnpike, Jefferson County, L. John Fleckenstein, R. Clark Graves, David L. Allen

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

This report discusses the investigation of the premature cracking that occurred on the National Turn pike, Jefferson County (1989). A detailed distress survey was performed evaluating each slab throughout the project site. Falling Weight Deflectometer testing was performed on every third slab. In addition subgrade samples were taken, along with the installation of three water monitoring wells. Laboratory test were conducted on the subgrade samples.

Damage that occurred near the curb inlets and manholes is probably due to insufficient compaction. The remaining damage is most likely related to the combined effects of a very soft subgrade, high water tables, and …

A Numerical Model For Areal Migration Of Water And Light Hydrocarbon In Unconfined Aquifers, Jagath J. Kaluarachchi, J. C. Parker, R. J. Lenhard Mar 1990

A Numerical Model For Areal Migration Of Water And Light Hydrocarbon In Unconfined Aquifers, Jagath J. Kaluarachchi, J. C. Parker, R. J. Lenhard

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications

A finite element model has been developed to simulate simultaneous flow of water and light hydrocarbon in an areal flow region of an unconfined aquifer for analyses of hydrocarbon spreading from subsurface leaks or spills and for use in design of free product recovery systems. Vertically integrated governing equations for water and oil flow are employed which assume local vertical equilibrium and negligible gas pressure gradients. Multiple water and free product recovery wells are handled as internal type-I boundary conditions by stipulating air-oil table elevation and free product height with corrections to convert grid averaged nodal heads to actual well …

Application Research On Wastewater Reuse For Petrochemical Refining Industry In Taiwan, Lih-Shyan Lee Jan 1990

Application Research On Wastewater Reuse For Petrochemical Refining Industry In Taiwan, Lih-Shyan Lee

Theses

Nowadays water conservation and pollution abatement are needed to provide increasingly higher levels of treatment for industrial wastewaters.

Reducing treatment costs give us the incentive to minimize the volume of Wastewater effluent. Also, the national goal of zero discharge of pollutants to the waterways by 1985 provided further incentive -to minimize the flow of wastewaters.

A successful treatment of the wastewater discharged from the secondary effluent of the petroleum refinery plant to economically acceptable conditions offers a challenge to our technology.

Through this research, it is concluded that the excellent effluent water qualities produced from filtration and granular activated carbon …

Testing And Modelling Of The Cleaner Wick System For In-Situ Treatment Of Contaminated Groundwater Plumes, Sanjiv I. Shah

Theses

The cleaner wick system, a modification of wick drains; a technology in recent use to consolidate low permeability soils, is proposed to treat contaminated groundwater plumes. Laboratory experiments on surrogate contaminants produce satisfactory results. Theoretical models are developed utilizing the cleaner wick system to treat volatile organic contaminants by air stripping and adsorption on granular activated carbon.

Treatment Of Trucking Station Wastewater By Two-Phase Anaerobic Digestion System And Rotating Biological Contactor, Tzu-Wen Uen Jan 1990

Treatment Of Trucking Station Wastewater By Two-Phase Anaerobic Digestion System And Rotating Biological Contactor, Tzu-Wen Uen

Theses

The wastewater produced as a result of trucking station activities has some major characteristics such as high COD (26,880 mg/1-42,925 mg/1) and BOD (12,278 mg/1-7,265 mg/1), high COD to BOD ratio (3.49-3.69), high pH range (3.72-11.7), and high grease content (480 mg/1-1,960 mg/1). Therefore, prior to any treatment, it is important to provide some sort of pre-treatment for pH adjustment and grease/oil removal.

The present laboratory investigation has indicated that successful treatment and purification of the subject wastewater is possible using two-phase anaerobic digestion system followed by rotating biological contactor. More than 90% of both COD and BOD was removed …

Desiccation And Permeability Of Backfill Materials In Soil-Bentonite Walls, Hemendra J. Moradia

Theses

Soil-Bentonite Walls offer a cost effective solution to many groundwater problems in new and remedial work projects such as hydraulic barriers in dams, dewatering large soil cuts, and as part of pollution control systems around hazardous waste landfills. However, the performance of soil-bentonite walls in environments other then fresh water types is still a matter of great controversy. In recent years, some data on soil-bentonite backfill have became available. The data indicate change in properties of these walls with time of exposure and concentration of chemicals found in leachates. However, no research work is available in the literature on the …

Cost Comparison Of Timber, Steel, And Prestressed Concrete Bridges, Richard A. Behr, E. J. Cundy, C. H. Goodspeed

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This study was undertaken to investigate the economics of timber bridge superstructures versus traditional steel/concrete and prestressed concrete alternatives in the short-span range of 20 to 60 ft (6.1-18.3 m). Only superstructure costs were considered because substructure and abutment costs are highly site-specific. A lack of definitive data regarding service lives and maintenance costs precluded a life-cycle cost study; thus, only initial costs were compared. Representative superstructure designs were obtained for timber, steel/concrete, and prestressed concrete bridges at 20-, 40-, and 60-ft spans. Five to six northern New England general contractors performed cost estimates on these designs. Also, nine timber …
