Frictional Resistance Of Geotextiles, Md. Khairul Alam Dec 1991

Frictional Resistance Of Geotextiles, Md. Khairul Alam

Theses

The pullout resistance of geotextiles was examined using pullout tests. A suitable wooden box with large (2 ft x 2 ft x 4 ft) dimensions was used to avoid the effect of boundary and to simulate field conditions. Two types of failure patterns were observed. For shallow embedment (<3 ft), geotextile produced a movement of the surrounding mass of sand in the shape of an inverted cone due to interlocking friction between geotextile and sand particles. The cone angle decreases with increase in depth of embedment. For embedment equal to or greater than 3 ft., no sand cone developed and the failure occurred along the interface of geotextile and sand. For 1 ft. surcharge, the increase in the pullout resistance due to combined horizontal and vertical embedment was about 30 %.

Stability And Durability Of Large Aggregate Asphalt Concrete, Rais A. Khan Dec 1991

Stability And Durability Of Large Aggregate Asphalt Concrete, Rais A. Khan

Theses

There are many factors which affect the properties of asphalt concrete and one of these is a maximum aggregate size used in the mix. In this study of the effect of maximum aggregate size on Marshall stability, flow and durability of asphalt aggregate mixtures is investigated.

Two different mixes having gradations with maximum aggregate sizes of 3/4 and 1-1/2 inches were considered. The optimum asphalt content for mix having 3/4 inch maximum aggregate size, was determined by the standard Marshall procedure. The optimum asphalt content for the mix having 1-1/2 inch maximum aggregate size, was estimated based on thickness of …

The Strength Of Cement Bentonite In Containment Structures, Liong Tin So Dec 1991

The Strength Of Cement Bentonite In Containment Structures, Liong Tin So

Theses

In recent years the use of cutoff or slurry walls has increased in the containment of hazardous waste. Several materials have been utilized for backfill in slurry walls. Two important properties of the material are shear strength and permeability. Previously, sodium bentonite had been used. However, it was discovered that variable pH would cause an increase in permeability. Studies have shown calcium bentonite have a constant permeability with varied pH (Oweis and Khera, 1990). This study was undertaken to determine strength of calcium bentonite as affected by cement and slag.

Triaxial shear tests and unconfined compression tests were done on …

A Finite Element Analysis Of Wood In Transverse Compression, A Mrema

Tanzania Journal of Engineering and Technology (TJET)

A two dimensional finite element analysis is utilized to predict the stress and strain distributions for wood in transverse compression. Important key var iables are incorporated into the ana lysis to define their influence on the stress and strain distributions. These variables are geometry of loading, geometry of specimen and the orthotropic ratio of the material. Based on the finite element analysis results, relationships are arising stress from developed relat ing maximum stress concentrations to the above three variables. possible appl ications of the results from this study relate to the development of more efficient design of connections such as …

Limits Of Limit Equilibrium And Finite Element Techniques Applied To Cracked Debris Dams On Collapsing Foundations, Stanley Soliday Jr. Dec 1991

Limits Of Limit Equilibrium And Finite Element Techniques Applied To Cracked Debris Dams On Collapsing Foundations, Stanley Soliday Jr.

Dissertations and Theses

Limits of slope stability, limit equilibrium methods, and of the finite element code FEADAM are reached in the application of these methods to the problem of cracked dams constructed on collapsing soils.

Utilizing a generic dam, various classic slope stability approaches are tested as possible dam slope failure mechanisms. Slope stability methods are rejected as a way to accurately define and quantify the collapse problem. As a result of this work a block rotation mode of collapse is postulated. Then the finite element method (FEM) is used to try to define and quantify the collapse problem. The FEM is applied …

Evaluation Of Torsional Provisions In Seismic Codes, Anil K. Chopra, Rakesh K. Goel Dec 1991

Evaluation Of Torsional Provisions In Seismic Codes, Anil K. Chopra, Rakesh K. Goel

Civil and Environmental Engineering

The effects of plan asymmetry on the earthquake response of code-designed, one-story systems are identified with the objective of evaluating how well these effects are represented by torsional provisions in building codes. The earthquake-induced deformations and ductility demands on resisting elements of asymmetric-plan systems, designed according to several different codes, are compared with their values if the system plan were symmetric. The presented results demonstrate that the design eccentricity in building codes should be modified in order to achieve the desirable goal of similar ductility demands on asymmetric-plan and symmetric-plan systems. The design eccentricity should be defined differently for elastic …

Green's Law Revisited: Tidal Long-Wave Propagation In Channels With Strong Topography, David A. Jay Nov 1991

Green's Law Revisited: Tidal Long-Wave Propagation In Channels With Strong Topography, David A. Jay

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

Green's Law states that tidal long-wave elevation ζ and tidal transport Q vary with width b and depth h according to ζ ≌ b−1/2h−1/4 and Q ≌ b+1/2h+/4. This solution is of limited utility because it is restricted to inviscid, infinitesimal waves in channels with no mean flow and weak topography (those with topographic scale L ≫ wavelength λ). An analytical perturbation model including finite-amplitude effects, river flow, and tidal flats has been used to show that (1) wave behavior to lowest order is a function of only two nondimensional parameters representing, respectively, …

Disc Size Scale-Up In Rotating Biological Contactor System, Chi-Sheng Chang Oct 1991

Disc Size Scale-Up In Rotating Biological Contactor System, Chi-Sheng Chang

Theses

Disc size scale-up of prototype and small-scale RBC plants are successfully developed by applying the 114 data sets obtained from 12 RBC plants to the evaluation of percent sBOD remaining. These data analyses are performed by the least square method, therefore, the scale-up factors of the prototype and the small-scale are determined at different hydraulic loading. Furthermore, the relationship between scale-up factor and the disc diameter are established under the given flow rate, the number of stages, and the number of discs. A group of Curves are obtained and can be utilized for the full-scale RBC plant preliminary design. The …

Stability Of Hot Mix Asphalt With Petroleum Contaminated Soils, De-Rong Lobo Huang Sep 1991

Stability Of Hot Mix Asphalt With Petroleum Contaminated Soils, De-Rong Lobo Huang

Theses

One of the most effective ways of reducing petroleum contaminated soil is to use it in the production of hot mix asphalt. Both asphalt cement and petroleum contaminates have similar chemical properties. Therefore, The contaminates will be locked within the asphalt matrix without potential leaching.

The six different petroleum contaminate soil samples from New Jersey were used in this research. Since those samples have different physical properties (such as moisture content, specific gravity, plastic limit, liquid limit, grain size distribution) and chemical properties( such as concentration of the contaminate, and type of contaminates) the maximum amount of petroleum contaminated soil …
