Nlp-Based Quantitative Methods For Measuring Highway Project Similarity To Support Project Clustering And Bundling, Quan Do
All Dissertations
State highway agencies (SHAs) often need to classify similar projects into distinct work type clusters, enabling them to correlate new projects with historical data on cost, schedule, pay item production rates, and project complexity. This classification also facilitates the identification of similar projects for project bundling. However, the conventional method for classifying projects into work types is inefficient, relying heavily on subjective judgment and manual review of project scope. This inefficiency hinders SHAs’ ability to effectively apply knowledge gained from historical projects to future projects. Moreover, the subjective nature of project classification is time-consuming and can result in inconsistencies and …
Quantitative Evaluation Of Baseflow Separation Methods Using An Integrated Hydrologic Model: A Case Study In A Snow-Dominated Watershed, Jihad Othman
All Graduate Reports and Creative Projects, Fall 2023 to Present
Baseflow, commonly referred to as the groundwater contribution to streamflow, constitutes approximately 50% of streamflow in mountainous regions of the Western United States. Accurately quantifying the amount of baseflow is critical for water management and decision-making, as it significantly impacts stream water quality, low flow availability, and ecosystem health. Traditionally, baseflow has been estimated using conceptual and automated baseflow separation methods, which are known to be both arbitrary and ambiguous, posing a challenge to validate them. In this study, we developed an integrated hydrologic model that seamlessly integrated the exchange between surface and subsurface flows to physically quantify the baseflow …

Civil Engineering Faculty Publications
Structural durability is critical for building and civil engineering safety, wherein the arrangement and distribution of reinforcing bar (rebar) is crucial. Improperly aligned rebar impacts bearing capacity, whereas uniform spacing optimally distributes loads, reducing stress. We introduce a computer-vision based Deep Vision Net (DVNet) model for real-time evaluation of rebar placement. A customized dataset is prepared in an environmental setup and augmented to address overfitting issues. This research conducts a comparative analysis of the learning performance exhibited by the proposed DVNet model against several other pre-trained models, such as Mask-RCNN and YOLOv5. The proposed DVNet model is built on a …

Stress-Dependent Instantaneous Cohesion And Friction Angle For The Mohr–Coulomb Criterion, Hao Li, Leo Pel, Zhenjiang You, David Smeulders
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
The strength criterion of rock is essential for stability control and safety design of geotechnical engineering constructions. Due to its widespread adoption, the Mohr–Coulomb (M-C) criterion is prominent among strength criteria. However, the M-C criterion is constrained by three significant limitations: it fails to capture the nonlinear strength response, overlooks the critical state, and disregards σ2. This study introduces a novel Stress-dependent Instantaneous Friction angle and Cohesion (SIFC) model for the M-C criterion to represent the convex strength envelope of intact rock, covering the spectrum from non-critical to critical states. In pursuit of this objective, an innovative approach for calculating …

Stress-Dependent Mohr–Coulomb Shear Strength Parameters For Intact Rock, Hao Li, Leo Pel, Zhenjiang You, David Smeulders
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Rock strength is imperative for the design and stability analysis of engineering structures. The Mohr–Coulomb (M-C) criterion holds significant prominence in geotechnical engineering. However, the M-C criterion fails to accurately capture the nonlinear strength response and neglects the critical state of rocks, potentially leading to inaccuracies in the design phase of deep engineering projects. This study introduces an innovative stress-dependent friction angle and cohesion (SFC) for the M-C criterion to capture the nonlinear strength responses of intact rocks, spanning from non-critical to critical states (brittle to ductile regions). A novel method for determining these stress-dependent parameters at each corresponding σ3 …
