Installation And Performance Evaluation Of Coaxial Cable Sensors For Crack And Corrosion Detection, Iana Muchaidze Jan 2011

Installation And Performance Evaluation Of Coaxial Cable Sensors For Crack And Corrosion Detection, Iana Muchaidze

Masters Theses

"Even under service loads, reinforced concrete (RC) structures can develop cracks that result in excessive deflection of the structures and provide passages for moisture to corrode steel reinforcement. It is thus critical to develop a simple, cost-effective tool for real-time crack monitoring and associated corrosion detection that may affect the engineering maintenance of RC structures. The objectives of this study include: (1) to develop a die-cut manufacturing process of coaxial cables with spiral outer conductors, (2) to quantify the sensing properties of a miniaturized topology-based crack sensor, (3) to investigate the effectiveness of various sensor installation procedures in RC applications, …

Categorization And Experimental Evaluation Of Anchorage Systems For Fiber-Reinforced Polymer Laminates Bonded To Reinforced Concrete Structures, Stephen V. Grelle Jan 2011

Categorization And Experimental Evaluation Of Anchorage Systems For Fiber-Reinforced Polymer Laminates Bonded To Reinforced Concrete Structures, Stephen V. Grelle

Masters Theses

"While externally-bonded fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) composites are commonly used for the strengthening of structurally deficient reinforced concrete (RC) members, the topic of anchoring FRP to concrete to achieve higher design strengths has not been addressed. Many innovative systems have been developed to anchor FRP to concrete, but the research involving these anchorage systems is not centralized and is therefore difficult to access. Additionally, systematic testing procedures for evaluating the strength of an anchorage system have not been widely used. To aid in the organization of anchorage system research and facilitate a better understanding of anchorage system behavior, a categorization system …

Development And Testing Of Chemically-Based Self-Consolidating Concrete, Mark Daniel Ezzell Jan 2011

Development And Testing Of Chemically-Based Self-Consolidating Concrete, Mark Daniel Ezzell

Masters Theses

"Self-consolidating concrete (SCC) possesses several characteristics that can benefit the concrete construction industry including accelerated construction, a reduction in labor and equipment, and a reduction in construction noise through eliminating or reducing the need to vibrate the concrete. However, SCC has some potential downsides. These problems can usually be attributed to higher paste content, higher fines content, rounder aggregate, and higher water to cement (w/c) ratios used to increase the flow of the concrete. The goal of this research project was to develop a SCC that had improved material properties through the use of chemical admixtures instead of modifications to …

Particulate Organic Carbon Fate And Transport In A Lowland, Temperate Watershed, William Isaac Ford Iii Jan 2011

Particulate Organic Carbon Fate And Transport In A Lowland, Temperate Watershed, William Isaac Ford Iii

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

Small lowland agricultural systems promote conditions where benthic biological communities can thrive. These biogeochemical processes have significant impacts on terrestrial ecosystem processes including POC flux and fate, nutrient balances, water quality budges, and aquatic biological functioning. Limited information is available on coupled biological and hydrologic processes in fluvial systems. This study investigates the mixture of biological and hydrologic processes in the benthic layer in order to understand POC cycling in the South Elkhorn system. Further, comprehensive modeling of POC flux in lowland systems has not been performed previously and the behavior of potentially controlling variables, such as hydrologic forcing and …

Methodology To Convert A Transportation Planning Origin-Destination Matrix Into A Microscopic Traffic Simulation Origin-Destination Matrix, Jose Osiris Vidana-Bencomo Jan 2011

Methodology To Convert A Transportation Planning Origin-Destination Matrix Into A Microscopic Traffic Simulation Origin-Destination Matrix, Jose Osiris Vidana-Bencomo

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Microscopic traffic simulation (MTS) is a cost-effective approach for the evaluation of traffic conditions in urban highways networks. In MTS models, traffic demand that is entered into the network is specified by one or several Origin-Destination (O-D) matrices. A major challenge in the application of MTS for large urban networks is the specification of the O-D matrices. This dissertation proposes a methodology that may be used to transform a O-D matrix from a transportation planning model (which is based on Traffic Analysis Zone, or TAZ, and is readily available) into a O-D matrix for a MTS model (which is traffic …

Evaluation Of Nondestructive Technologies To Assess Presence And Extent Of Delamination Of Hot Mix Asphalt Airfield Pavements, Manuel Celaya Jan 2011

Evaluation Of Nondestructive Technologies To Assess Presence And Extent Of Delamination Of Hot Mix Asphalt Airfield Pavements, Manuel Celaya

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Sufficient bonding between the hot mix asphalt layers is essential to ensure the desired structural capacity of a pavement. Delamination or debonding problems are particularly more severe on airfield pavements, due to higher traffic loads applied by aircrafts. Further progression of delamination may result in stripping of the lower layers due to the intrusion of moisture or may develop other dangerous distresses such as foreign object debris. The existing nondestructive testing procedures and equipment that have the potential to address the problem were identified and their effectiveness and potential for success were evaluated. The Ground Penetrating Radar, Falling Weight Deflectometer, …

Impact Of Truck Suspension And Road Roughness On Loads Exerted To Pavements, Shahram Misaghi Bonabi Jan 2011

Impact Of Truck Suspension And Road Roughness On Loads Exerted To Pavements, Shahram Misaghi Bonabi

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

A software package, called IntPave, an Integrated Pavement Damage Analyzer, was developed at the Center of Transportation Infrastructure Systems at The University of Texas at El Paso with the capacity to calculate the pavement distress for flexible pavements under any type of traffic load, and to make a comparison of the level of distress caused by a standard and a non-standard, assuming statically exerted loading. However, what has been lacking is a tool to measure the dynamic impact on the pavement due to vehicle-road interaction. In this report, the interaction of truck suspension systems with the roughness of the road …

Improving Safety And Mobility At High-Speed Intersections With Innovations In Sensor Technology, Anuj Sharma, Darcy M. Bullock, Senem Velipasalar, Mauricio Casares, Jacob Schmitz, Nathaniel P. Burnett Jan 2011

Improving Safety And Mobility At High-Speed Intersections With Innovations In Sensor Technology, Anuj Sharma, Darcy M. Bullock, Senem Velipasalar, Mauricio Casares, Jacob Schmitz, Nathaniel P. Burnett

Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering: Faculty Publications

A series of innovations has been made in the vehicle sensors field. Technologies such as IntelliDrive and radar-based smart sensors make it possible to track each vehicle in proximity to an intersection. However, current technologies have limitations, such as lack of robustness, accuracy, or level of penetration. This paper assumes an accurate wide-area detector (WAD), which might be soon available, and highlights the potential benefits that might be derived in safety and efficiency of operations at high-speed intersections from the deployment of the WAD. Two critical areas in which wide-area detection can lead to significant improvements are discussed: (a) location …

Experimental Damage Diagnosis Of A Model Three-Story Spatial Frame, Samantha Sabatino Jan 2011

Experimental Damage Diagnosis Of A Model Three-Story Spatial Frame, Samantha Sabatino

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Structural damage can be induced by a variety of events from short-term abnormal stresses to long-term natural aging. Detection of changes in a structure's ability to withstand subsequent loads can aid decisions on safety, repair, rehabilitation, and demolition. Dynamic property shifts can show internal cracks and minor damage before propagation or failure occurs, but only if a proper indicator is selected. In order to evaluate potential damage indices, a three-story metal frame building was constructed. Using Star Modal software, dynamic structural properties were obtained from modal decomposition on experimental tap test responses. The natural frequencies and mode shapes of the …

Column Capacity Evaluation For Low-Rise Moment Frame Steel Buildings In Mississippi Subject To Wind And Seismic Hazards, Yihong Shi

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

For the design of steel frame structures, AISC outlines approaches of second-order analysis. In this study, two of these approaches are considered: Amplified First-Order Analysis Method and Direct Analysis Method. The methods were studied using SAP2000. Amplification of moments in a two-story plane frame subject to a wind load case is computed using both methods and shown to be of comparable magnitude for small deformations. ASCE/SEI 7 and IBC provisions were used to develop lateral design load conditions for the frames. In this study, a hypothetical building was assumed to be constructed in four different locations (Southaven, Batesville, Jackson and …

Improved Joining Method For Segmental Prestressed Structures, Ralph Warren Jensen Jan 2011

Improved Joining Method For Segmental Prestressed Structures, Ralph Warren Jensen

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

This dissertation addresses the need for more robust and materially efficient structures, specifically structures that absorb higher levels of energy, can self-erect and which have variable reaction capabilities. These structures can take much higher levels of strain and loading compared to current technologies in reinforced concrete and carbon fiber composites. These structures are made using a novel method of joining segmental elements. A great advantage with this segmental structural system is it's survivability under overloaded conditions. During an impact, or concentrated pressure load, the structure will wrap around the impact zone thereby widely distributing the contact stresses. This function or …

Development Of A New Mix Design Method And Specification Requirements For Asphalt Treated Bases, Hector Antonio Hernandez Jan 2011

Development Of A New Mix Design Method And Specification Requirements For Asphalt Treated Bases, Hector Antonio Hernandez

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Asphalt stabilized bases in Texas are usually designed and constructed as per Item 292, "Asphalt Treatment (Plant Mixed)," of the 2004 Standard Specification book. This specification is a hybrid of base and hot mix asphalt concrete procedures and requirements, which are sometimes incompatible. In addition, this Item uses a specific Texas Gyratory compactor that is not readily available to all districts. Some districts have started using test method Tex-204-F, Part III, `Mix Design for Large Stone Mixtures Using the Superpave Gyratory Compactor." However, this procedure was originally developed to design Type A and Type B hot mix at 96% density …

Impact Of Signal Timing Information On Safety And Efficiency Of Signalized Intersections, Anuj Sharma Jan 2011

Impact Of Signal Timing Information On Safety And Efficiency Of Signalized Intersections, Anuj Sharma

Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering: Faculty Publications

Signalized intersections are provided in traffic networks to improve the safety and efficiency of vehicular and pedestrian movement. There are various measures under education, enforcement and engineering headings that are being attempted to improve safety and efficiency of operations at a signalized intersection. Provision of signal countdown timer, a timer showing the remaining red and green time in a phase, is one such measure and is commonly adopted in India. However, studies on effects of countdown timer under Indian traffic conditions are very scarce. Traffic heterogeneity and lack of lane discipline makes transferability of models developed in other countries (with …

Circulation, Sediment Concentration And Oxygen Depletion In The Tidal Ems River, Stefan A. Talke, Huib E. De Swart

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

We present measurements which show that the tidal Ems River in Germ any is extremely muddy over a 30 km + turbid zone, with fluid mud o f 1-2 m thickness covering the bed with suspended sediment concentrations (SSC) o f greater than 50 kg.m-3. Moreover, we show that these elevated SSC contain large quantities of organic material which deplete dissolved oxygen (DO) and produce summertime hypoxic zones. Using mathematical modeling, we develop simplified representations o f the estuary physics that reproduce the tidally-averaged circulation, SSC distribution, and oxygen depletion. These models show that SSC and oxygen concentrations …

"The familiarity and acceptance of micropiles by engineers, contractors, and owners has greatly expanded in recent years such that they are routinely considered on many projects. However, research regarding the behavior of micropiles has lagged behind. The goal of this research project was to address some of the fundamental gaps that were not addressed in engineering practice and require further study and testing. Specifically, this research studied the behavior of micropile foundations subjected to simultaneous axial and lateral (combined) loading, including an assessment of the impact of axial load on lateral behavior of micropiles. This research project consisted of three …

Hilbert Transform Applications In Signal Analysis And Non-Parametric Identification Of Linear And Nonlinear Systems, Zuocai Wang Jan 2011

Hilbert Transform Applications In Signal Analysis And Non-Parametric Identification Of Linear And Nonlinear Systems, Zuocai Wang

Doctoral Dissertations

"Hilbert Huang Transform faces several challenges in dealing with closely-spaced frequency components, short-time and weak disturbances, and interrelationships between two time-varying modes of nonlinear vibration due to its mixed mode problem associated with empirical mode decomposition (EMD). To address these challenges, analytical mode decomposition (AMD) based on Hilbert Transform is proposed and developed for an adaptive data analysis of both stationary and non-stationary responses. With a suite of predetermined bisecting frequencies, AMD can analytically extract the individual components of a structural response between any two bisecting frequencies and function like an adaptive bandpass filter that can deal with frequency-modulated responses …

Postcyclic Behavior Of Low-Plasticity Silt, Shuying Wang Jan 2011

Postcyclic Behavior Of Low-Plasticity Silt, Shuying Wang

Doctoral Dissertations

"Liquefaction of low-plasticity silt has been reported during earthquakes in the recent past. Excess pore pressure builds up due to the dynamic loading and then dissipates. The postcyclic behavior of low-plasticity silt was investigated in this research for materials obtained from the Mississippi River Valley. The experimental program involved specimen preparation using a slurry consolidation approach. A special technique was developed for specimen movement, reducing the testing program time by half. Both static and cyclic triaxial tests were conducted to confirm the ability to prepare replica specimens. In order to characterize the monotonic behavior, triaxial tests were conducted to determine …

A Discrete-Continuous Modeling Framework For Long-Distance, Leisure Travel Demand Analysis, Caleb Van Nostrand Jan 2011

A Discrete-Continuous Modeling Framework For Long-Distance, Leisure Travel Demand Analysis, Caleb Van Nostrand

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This study contributes to the literature on national long-distance travel demand modeling by providing an analysis of households' annual destination choices and time allocation patterns for long-distance leisure travel purposes. An annual vacation destination choice and time allocation model is formulated to simultaneously predict the different destinations that a household visits and the time it spends on each of these visited destinations, in a year. The model takes the form of a Multiple Discrete-Continuous Extreme Value (MDCEV) structure (Bhat, 2005; Bhat, 2008). The model assumes that households allocate their annual vacation time to visit one or more destinations in a …

The Evaluation Of Hybrid Slurry Resulting From The Introduction Of Additives To Mineral Slurries, Kyle Douglas Yeasting Jan 2011

The Evaluation Of Hybrid Slurry Resulting From The Introduction Of Additives To Mineral Slurries, Kyle Douglas Yeasting

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Drilled shaft construction often requires the use of drill slurry to maintain borehole stability during excavation and concreting. While drill slurry may be composed of fluids ranging from air to petroleum, drilled shaft construction typically makes use of water based drilling fluids. Although clean water may be utilized as a drilling fluid, a premixed slurry consisting of water, minerals, and/or polymers is more commonly used. Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) specifications require the use of mineral slurry for all primary structures. The slurry resists the intrusion of groundwater, slows the outward migration of drilling fluid from the excavation, and aids …
