Quantifying Individual Potential Contributions Of The Hybrid Sulfur Electrolyzer, John A. Staser, Maximilian B. Gorensek, John W. Weidner
Quantifying Individual Potential Contributions Of The Hybrid Sulfur Electrolyzer, John A. Staser, Maximilian B. Gorensek, John W. Weidner
Faculty Publications
The hybrid sulfur cycle has been investigated as a means to produce clean hydrogen efficiently on a large scale by first decomposing H2SO4 to SO2, O2, and H2O and then electrochemically oxidizing SO2 back to H2SO4 with the cogeneration of H2. Thus far, it has been determined that the total cell potential for the hybrid sulfur electrolyzer is controlled mainly by water transport in the cell. Water is required at the anode to participate in the oxidation of SO2 to H2SO4 …
An Efficient Electrochemical–Thermal Model For A Lithium-Ion Cell By Using The Proper Orthogonal Decomposition Method, Long Cai, Ralph E. White
An Efficient Electrochemical–Thermal Model For A Lithium-Ion Cell By Using The Proper Orthogonal Decomposition Method, Long Cai, Ralph E. White
Faculty Publications
The proper orthogonal decomposition method was applied to develop an efficient, reduced order electrochemical–thermal model for a lithium-ion cell. This model was validated for discharge simulations over a wide range of C rates and various cooling conditions of the cell. The reduced order model agrees well with the COMSOL model, a commercial finite element method solver, and requires times less computation time than the COMSOL model. The model predictions indicate that the discharge time or percent of capacity removed from the cell at an end of discharge voltage of 3.0 V depends on the rate of the discharge and heat …

Maximizing The Life Of A Lithium-Ion Cell By Optimization Of Charging Rates, Saeed Khaleghi Rahimian, Sean Rayman, Ralph E. White
Faculty Publications
Using a dynamic optimization method, the optimum charge currents as a function of cycle number during cycling for the lithium-ion cell are obtained. A single particle physics-based model, which includes capacity fade, was applied to simulate the cell performance under low earth-orbit (LEO) cycling conditions. Useful cell life is defined as the number of cycles before the end of discharge voltage drops below 3.0 V or the cell discharge capacity becomes less than 20% of the original discharge capacity. The simulated useful cell life can be increased by ∼29.28% by varying the charge current.

A mathematical model to simulate the generation of mechanical stress during the discharge process in a dual porous insertion electrode cell sandwich comprised of lithium cobalt oxide and carbon is presented. The model attributes stress buildup within intercalation electrodes to two different aspects: changes in the lattice volume due to intercalation and phase transformation during the charge/discharge process. The model is used to predict the influence of cell design parameters such as thickness, porosity, and particle size of the electrodes on the magnitude of stress generation. The model developed in this study can be used to understand the mechanical degradation …

Multimetallic Electrocatalysts Of Pt, Ru, And Ir Supported On Anatase And Rutile Tio2 For Oxygen Evolution In An Acid Environment, Roderick E. Fuentes, Jake Farell, John W. Weidner
Faculty Publications
Anatase and rutile TiO2 were investigated as stable supports for different multimetallic nanoparticles (i.e., Pt:Ru, Pt:Ir, Pt:Ru:Ir, and Ir:Ru) and tested for activity toward the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Overall, Ir:Ru had the highest activity toward OER (i.e., current per gram of metal) compared to the other multimetallic combinations studied. This bimetallic supported on anatase TiO2 had a 53% higher current per gram of metal than an unsupported electrocatalyst of the same composition. The higher catalyst utilization of the supported electrocatalysts for OER is consistent with small, well-dispersed nanoparticles, which were observed in high resolution transmission electron microscopy images.

Use Of A Segmented Electrode To Control Current Distribution In Electrochemical Systems, Barry Van Tassell
Use Of A Segmented Electrode To Control Current Distribution In Electrochemical Systems, Barry Van Tassell
Dissertations and Theses
"The goal of this project was to investigate the use of segmented electrodes to control the current distribution through an electrochemical cell. To achieve this goal, the project was separated into two parts, designing a scalable piece of hardware that could create a current distribution, and then using that hardware to create noticeable changes in a system by changing the current distribution within the system. Prior to building the current distribution device, a basic 3-electrode galvanostat was built in order to test its fundamental design characteristics. The design stressed a simplistic hardware, relying on software to control the current. A …

Effect Of Fluorination On Partitioning Behavior And Bilayer Self Assembly, Vivian Aramide Ojogun
Effect Of Fluorination On Partitioning Behavior And Bilayer Self Assembly, Vivian Aramide Ojogun
University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations
Fluorinated systems are defined by unique properties that offer advantages in drug delivery, material synthesis and industrial applications. In comparison to their hydrocarbon counterparts, the design of fluorinated solutes for tailored applications is limited by the inability to predict the effect of fluorination on phase behavior. This work examines and interprets the influence of fluorination on the phase behavior of fluorinated solutes and surfactants, with emphasis on their impact on vesicle bilayers.
Thermodynamic partitioning of functionalized series of fluorinated and hydrocarbon nicotinate prodrugs fashioned to promote solubility in a fluorocarbon solvent (perfluorooctyl bromide; PFOB) is measured. Predictive approaches are also …

Synthesis And Characterization Of Metal Decorated Bamboo Structured Carbon Nanotubes For Hydrogen Storage, Sean Charles Mickey
Doctoral Dissertations
"Although hydrogen has been considered as a viable alternative fuel, the storage systems used to contain the hydrogen must be improved for large scale use. A variety of conceivable storage options exist ranging from compressed gas, cryogenic liquid, chemical solid state storage, and adsorptive surfaces. Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) provide a potentially viable option for hydrogen storage applications as a high surface area, lightweight media for adsorptive storage, but do not efficiently store hydrogen at ambient temperatures. Metal hydrides, on the other hand, are able to store large weight percents of hydrogen in a chemical solid state, but generally have unfavorable …

Calibration Of Hdm-4 For Use In Pavement Management Systems (Pms), Nurdin Mushule
Calibration Of Hdm-4 For Use In Pavement Management Systems (Pms), Nurdin Mushule
Tanzania Journal of Engineering and Technology (TJET)
One of major problems of road management in developing countries is the lack of decision making tools for preparing road maintenance programmes. This results in poor resource allocation and poor utilisation of existing assets. Pavement management systems (PMS) have been developed around the world in order to assist with the pavement management process in a co-ordinated and systematic manner. Some developed countries have derived pavement performance models that are suited to local conditions by setting up long term pavement performance studies. Conversely, most developing countries do not have the resources required to set up similar large-scale field experiments. However, validation …

Preparation And Hydrogen Absorption/Desorption Of Nanoporous Palladium Thin Films, Wen-Chung Li, Thomas John Balk
Chemical and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications
Nanoporous Pd (np-Pd) was prepared by co-sputtering Pd-Ni alloy films onto Si substrates, followed by chemical dealloying with sulfuric acid. X-ray diffractometry and chemical analysis were used to track the extent of dealloying. The np-Pd structure was changed from particle-like to sponge-like by diluting the sulfuric acid etchant. Using suitable precursor alloy composition and dealloying conditions, np-Pd films were prepared with uniform and open sponge-like structures, with interconnected ligaments and no cracks, yielding a large amount of surface area for reactions with hydrogen. Np-Pd films exhibited shorter response time for hydrogen absorption/desorption than dense Pd films, showing promise for hydrogen …

Thermal And Mechanical Multistate Folding Of Rnase H, Thomas A. Knotts, Terry J. Schmitt, Jonathan E. Clark
Faculty Publications
Two different classes of experimental techniques exist by which protein folding mechanisms are ascertained. The first class, of which circular dichroism is an example, probes thermally-induced folding. The second class, which includes atomic force microscopy and optical tweezers, measures mechanically-induced folding. In this article, we investigate if proteins fold/unfold via the same mechanisms both thermally and mechanically. We do so using Ribonuclease H, a protein that has been shown to fold through a three-state mechanism using both types of experimental techniques. A detailed, molecular-level description of the states involved in thermal and mechanical folding shows that mechanisms for both types …

Computational Modeling Of Biochemical Systems Using Cellular Automata, Advait Apte
Theses and Dissertations
Biological systems exhibit complex behaviors through coordinated responses of individual biological components. With the advent of genome-scale techniques, one focus has been to develop methods to model interactions between components to accurately describe intact system function. Mathematical modeling techniques such as constraint-based modeling, agent-based modeling, cellular automata (CA) modeling and differential equation modeling are employed as computational tools to study biological phenomenon. We have shown that cellular automata simulations can be used as a computational tool for 12 predicting the dynamics of biological systems with stochastic behavior. The basic premise for the research was the observations made during a study …

Investigation Of The Mechanical Properties Of Poly (Ethylene Glycol) Diacrylate By Nanoindentation Using Atomic Force Microscopy, Zouheir Drira
Theses and Dissertations
Poly (ethylene glycol) (PEG) hydrogel based polymers are among the most widely used synthetic materials for biomedical applications. Because of their biocompatibility, and ease of fabrication, hydrogels are highly suitable for use as constructs to engineer tissues as well as for cell transplantation. A critical parameter of importance for PEG hydrogels is their mechanical properties which are highly dependent on the environmental conditions. Properties of PEG-based hydrogels can be engineered to resemble scaffolds composed of extracellular matrix molecules, which provide structural support, adhesive sites and mechanical as well as biomechanical signals to most cells. The mechanical properties of these synthetic …
Prediction Of Fluid Viscosity Through Transient Molecular Dynamic Simulations, Jason Christopher Thomas
Prediction Of Fluid Viscosity Through Transient Molecular Dynamic Simulations, Jason Christopher Thomas
Theses and Dissertations
A novel method of calculating viscosity from molecular dynamics simulations is developed, benchmarked, and tested. The technique is a transient method which has the potential to reduce CPU requirements for many conditions. An initial sinusoidal velocity profile is overlaid upon the peculiar velocities of the individual molecules in an equilibrated simulation. The transient relaxation of this initial velocity profile is then compared to the corresponding analytical solution of the momentum equation by adjusting the viscosity-related parameters in the constitutive equation that relate the shear rate to the stress tensor. The newly developed Transient Molecular Dynamics (TMD) method was tested for …

A mathematical model for the evolution of pulsed laser-irradiated, molten metallic films has been developed using the lubrication theory. The heat transfer problem that incorporates the absorbed heat from a single laser beam or the interfering laser beams is solved analytically. Using this temperature field, we derive the 3D long-wave evolution PDE for the film height. To get insights into dynamics of dewetting, we study the 2D version of the evolution equation by means of a linear stability analysis and by numerical simulations. The stabilizing and destabilizing effects of various system parameters, such as the reflectivity, the peak laser beam …

Exploring Stress Overshoot Phenomenon Upon Startup Deformation Of Entangled Linear Polymeric Liquids, Yangyang Wang, Shi-Qing Wang
Exploring Stress Overshoot Phenomenon Upon Startup Deformation Of Entangled Linear Polymeric Liquids, Yangyang Wang, Shi-Qing Wang
College of Polymer Science and Polymer Engineering
This work explores the picture associated with stress overshoot during sudden continual (i.e., startup) external deformation of entangled polymeric liquids and proposes a specific scaling form to depict the intermolecular interactions responsible for chain deformation. Following a previously proposed idea that the stress overshoot in startup deformation is a signature of yielding, we search for ingredients that should go into the description of the force imbalance at the yield point and show that the expression for the intermolecular locking force f(iml), derived from the characteristics associated with the yield point, can be tested against experiment. New rate-switching experiments support the …

Nature Of Steady Flow In Entangled Fluids Revealed By Superimposed Small Amplitude Oscillatory Shear, Pouyan E. Boukany, Shi-Qing Wang
College of Polymer Science and Polymer Engineering
We carry out a systematic investigation into steady-state shear behavior of six entangled solutions based on a superposition of continuous shear and small amplitude oscillatory shear (SAOS). During steady shear in the shear thinning regime, the superimposed SAOS frequency sweep measurements reveal characteristics of viscous liquids, e. g., terminal dynamics, on the experimental time scale of the reciprocal shear rate. The residual entanglement network retains the same level of elastic stiffness as the equilibrium system does. Consistent with the convective constraint release idea, chains in the network are forced to pass around each other as they must do so to …

Ultrasound is then applied to release the drug directly to the tumor and in the process minimize the adverse side effects of chemotherapy on non-tumor tissues. Here, we present an artificial neural network (ANN) model that attempts to model the dynamic release of Dox from P105 micelles under different ultrasonic power intensities at two frequencies. The developed ANN model is then utilized to optimize the ultrasound application to achieve a target …

A novel pulsed corona wire-in-tube reactor with quartz view-ports allowed visual observation of the effect of charge voltage and gas composition on the corona distribution. The H2S conversion and energy efficiency of H2S decomposition in this pulsed corona discharge reactor varied at constant power due to the selected values of the electrical parameters of pulse forming capacitance, charge voltage, and pulse frequency. Low pulse forming capacitance, low charge voltage, and high pulse frequency operation produce the highest energy efficiency of H2S conversion at constant power. H2S conversion is more efficient in Ar-N2 gas mixtures than in Ar or N2. these …
