Assessment Of Spatial Variability Of Groundwater Potential Using Remote Sensing And Gis-Based-Criteria Evaluation For Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania, Augustina Alexander
Tanzania Journal of Engineering and Technology (TJET)
Groundwater is an important resource for the continuous provision of water supply in both urban and rural areas. Lack of enough knowledge about the spatial variability of groundwater potential zones (GWPZS) has a negative impact on groundwater extraction development and management and may result into over exploitation. In this study, analytic hierarchy approach (AHP)-coupled with multi criteria decision analysis (MCDA) and GIS techniques were employed to integrate hydrogeological, geological as well as topographical data to assess spatial variability of groundwater potential zones of Dar es Salaam city. Seven thematic layers such as lithology, slope, land-use, lineament, drainage, soil, and rainfall …

Research Symposium
Background: Advanced drug delivery systems (DDSs) have received enormous attention in biomedical applications due to their pharmacodynamic and pharmacokinetic drug properties. For the present study, poly 4-hydroxyphenyl methacrylate (PHPMA)/CNOs (f-CNOs) inserted bovine serum albumin (BSA) nanofibers were prepared for stimuli-responsive release of Doxorubicin (DOX). Temperature and pH would be altered to study the release of DOX in acidic microenvironments.
Methods: PHPMA were coupled with COOH-CNOs via ester coupling via the sonochemical method to produce PHPMA-CNOs (f-CNOs). Then, f-CNOs/DOX embedded BSA nanofibers were prepared at room temperature using Forcespinning. UV spectra of DOX-loaded nanofibers were studied to investigate the …

Hydrophobicity Optimization Of Cathode Catalyst Layer For Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell, Hao-Jie Chen, Mei-Hua Tang, Sheng-Li Chen
Journal of Electrochemistry
Hydrophobicity of the cathode catalyst layers (CCLs) crucially determines the performance of proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) by affecting the transports of oxygen and liquid water. In this regard, polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) is usually used as a hydrophobic additive to facilitate the oxygen and water transports in CCLs. So far, there remains lacking systematic effort to optimize the addition methods of PTFE in CCLs and the mechanisms behind. In this work, the effects of the approaches for PTFE addition and the distribution of PTFE on the mass transport of oxygen and the proton conduction in CCLs were studied by using …

Thyroid receptor signaling controls major physiological processes and disrupted signaling can cause severe disorders that negatively impact human life. Consequently, methods to detect thyroid receptor ligands are of great toxicologic and pharmacologic importance. Previously, we reported thyroid receptor ligand detection with cell-free protein synthesis of a chimeric fusion protein composed of the human thyroid receptor beta (hTRβ) receptor activator and a β-lactamase reporter. Here, we report a 60% reduction in sensing cost by reengineering the chimeric fusion protein biosensor to include a reporter system composed of either the full-length beta galactosidase (β-gal), the alpha fragment of β-gal (β-gal-α), or a …

Large, open-gate transistors made from metal nanoparticle arrays offer possibilities to build new electronic devices, such as sensors. A nanoparticle necklace network (N3) of Au particles from 300 K to cryogenic temperatures exhibit a nonohmic I–Vd behavior, I ≈ (Vd–VT)𝜻, where VT is a conduction gap and 𝜻 is a constant critical exponent. The conduction gap in N3, made from disordered networks of 1D chains of 10 nm diameter Au particles exhibits room temperature (RT) gating. Although the I–Vd behavior at RT is identical to Coulomb blockade, …

Various approaches have used neural networks as probabilistic models for the design of protein sequences. These "inverse folding" models employ different objective functions, which come with trade-offs that have not been assessed in detail before. This study introduces probabilistic definitions of protein stability and conformational specificity and demonstrates the relationship between these chemical properties and the p(stucture|seq) Boltzmann probability objective. This links the Boltzmann probability objective function to experimentally verifiable outcomes. We propose a novel sequence decoding algorithm, referred to as “BayesDesign”, that leverages Bayes’ Rule to maximize the p(stucture|seq) objective instead of the p(seq|structure) objective common in inverse folding …

Photocatalytic hydrogen production is a green technology while significantly impeded by the sluggish and uncontrolled charge dynamics for less electron accumulation on catalyst surface. Herein, we proposed an effective strategy of epitaxial growth of a van der Waals (VDW) homojunction on an intralayer homojunction of carbon nitride for a controlled charge flow. Experimental and simulation collectively disclosed a tandem internal electric field (IEF) in the integrated hybrid, stringing a lateral IEF along the intralayer homojunction with a vertical IEF within the VDW homojunction. The planar IEF dominates laterally dispersive movement of charge carriers for their efficient separations and mobilities, meanwhile …

Bioremediation of oil spills occurs when indigenous microbes metabolize petroleum hydrocarbons. Rapid proliferation of hydrocarbon-consuming bacteria near the oil-water interface is vital to optimizing the oil biodegradation rate. Adding nanoparticles (NPs) to microbial systems can enhance the bacterial growth rate. However, the role of NP source material and surface charge on their ability to impact bacterial growth and oil-water interface characteristics is poorly understood. Here, we investigate the role of NP composition and surface chemistry on the growth rate of hydrocarbon-consuming bacteria and its attachment to the oil-water interface. We use Alcanivorax borkumensis as a model organism because of its …

In today’s complex industrial environment, operators are often faced with challenging situations that require quick and accurate decision-making. The human-machine interface (HMI) can display too much information, leading to information overload and potentially compromising the operator’s ability to respond effectively. To address this challenge, decision support models are needed to assist operators in identifying and responding to potential safety incidents. In this paper, we present an experiment to evaluate the effectiveness of a recommendation system in addressing the challenge of information overload. The case study focuses on a formaldehyde production simulator and examines the performance of an improved Human-Machine Interface …

Microextraction technique (e.g., solid phase microextraction, thin film microextraction, in-tube extraction) brings a revolutionary change in air sampling techniques over the recent few years. This advanced technique exhibits a high pollutant extraction rate, a low retention time, and a lower error margin compared to conventional air sampling techniques. The accuracy range of microextraction technique (MET) was recorded ~90-95% to isolate the volatile organic components, oxygenated and halogenated carbon particles from the air. However, the efficiency of MET increases additional >3-5% when employed by coupled with gas chromatography or gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The conventional sampling techniques (e.g., bag sampling, grab sampling) …

Quantification Of Geodetic Strain Rate Uncertainties And Implications For Seismic Hazard Estimates, Jeremy Maurer, Kathryn Materna
Geosciences and Geological and Petroleum Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Geodetic velocity data provide first-order constraints on crustal surface strain rates, which in turn are linked to seismic hazard. Estimating the 2-D surface strain tensor everywhere requires knowledge of the surface velocity field everywhere, while geodetic data such as Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) only have spatially scattered measurements on the surface of the Earth. To use these data to estimate strain rates, some type of interpolation is required. In this study, we review methodologies for strain rate estimation and compare a suite of methods, including a new implementation based on the geostatistical method of kriging, to compare variation between …
