A micromechanics model is developed to predict Young’s modulus of perfluorosulfonic acid (PFSA) membranes at various temperatures and water contents. The morphology of PFSA membranes is characterized by a two-phase structure, where hydrophilic clusters expand to hold water molecules during swelling, whereas the hydrophobic polymer network maintains the structural stability. A representative volume element (RVE) is proposed based on the descriptions for the nanostructure of PFSA membranes available in the literature. On the basis of mechanics model, we estimate Young’s modulus in tension of PFSA membranes as a function of water volume fraction for various temperatures. The results show that …

Chemical, Biomolecular, and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications
Background: Lipid-based dispersion of nanoparticles provides a biologically inspired route to designing therapeutic agents and a means of reducing nanoparticle toxicity. Little is currently known on how the presence of nanoparticles influences lipid vesicle stability and bilayer phase behavior. In this work, the formation of aqueous lipid/nanoparticle assemblies (LNAs) consisting of hydrophobic silver-decanethiol particles (5.7 ± 1.8 nm) embedded within 1,2-dipalmitoyl-sn-glycero-3- phosphocholine (DPPC) bilayers is demonstrated as a function of the DPPC/Ag nanoparticle (AgNP) ratio. The effect of nanoparticle loading on the size distribution, bilayer phase behavior, and bilayer fluidity is determined. Concomitantly, the effect of bilayer incorporation on …

Phase Unwrapping InSAR Image Using Local Energy Minimization Approach. Reconstruction process of phase data from its cover is called Phase Unwrapping (PU). Ideally, without any noise phrase, singularity, and aliasing problems, the phase information can be unwrapped easily. However, in fact, the phase data actually always get noise disturbance and discontinuity. The PU process becomes more complicated and needs a better PU algorithm to address the problems properly. In this research, the local PU algorithm is developed using minimization of close related firstorder pixels energy approach. In this method, the energy difference between four close related pixels is counted, followed …

Spectral Response Surfaces And The Ringing Response Of Offshore Structures, I Ketut Suastika
Makara Journal of Technology
A method, called spectral response surface method, is proposed for the study of the ringing phenomenon of offshore structures. Newman’s results for diffraction force on a column were reformulated in terms of the frequency components of the ocean surface and their Hilbert transforms. Using a first-order reliability method together with a dynamic model for the structural response, it is straightforward to calculate the ocean surface history most likely to generate an extreme ringing response and the ringing response history.

Implantable material surfaces suffer from unavoidable major events of blood–biomaterial interactions leading to thrombus formation and finally foreign material rejection. An albuminated surface can minimize the platelet adhesion and activation that reduces the chance of thrombus formation. The main objective of our work was to design surfaces having maximum human serum albumin (HSA) binding capacity over other plasma proteins in blood by covalently grafting custom made peptides having selectivity and specificity towards HSA. First, silicon wafer surfaces were chemically treated to generate –NH2 terminated self-assembled monolayer (SAM). SAMs were then covalently coupled with (a) peptides using 1- ethyl-3-[3-dimethylaminopropyl]carbodiimide hydrochloride and …

This combined theoretical and experimental study conclusively demonstrates that annealing times play a crucial role in the PCR amplification of GC-rich templates. To assist with the DNA amplification of GC-rich targets, a theory has been developed that evaluates the fraction of annealed primer/polymerase complex at the correct binding site as a function of annealing temperature and annealing period. Optimum annealing times lie in the range of 3 to 6 s, and annealing times greater than 10 s yield smeared PCR amplified products. The theory has been applied to the PCR amplification of the following human cDNA templates: ARX gene (78.2%, …

Peak hour electricity demand is associated with wholesale electricity prices that are sometimes more than 10 times higher than in off-peak periods. During these high-demand periods congested transmission lines and insufficient generation capacity can lead to brownouts and blackouts. This problem can be especially acute in urban centers. One way to alleviate this problem is to build new peaking plants. We investigated the costs and benefits, including expenditures and adverse health effects, of using existing backup generators and battery based electrical storage facilities to meet peak load demands rather than investing in a new power plant. Using small-scale generation located …

Modeling soot formation in turbulent nonpremixed combustion is a difficult problem. Unlike most gaseous combustion species, soot lacks a strong state relationship with the mixture fraction due to unsteady formation rates which overlap transport timescales, and strong differential diffusion between gaseous species and soot. The conditional moment closure model (CMC) has recently been applied to the problem of turbulent soot formation. A challenge in CMC modeling is the treatment of differential diffusion. Three-dimensional direct numerical simulation (DNS) of a nonpremixed ethylene jet flame with soot formation has been performed using a 19 species reduced ethylene mechanism and a four-step, three-moment, …

Novel Polypropylene Based Microporous Membranes Via Spherulitic Deformation, Kuan-Yin Lin
Dissertations
A novel method for creating a microporous polypropylene membrane via spherulitic deformation is described. The microporous structure was generated by the combination of intra-spherulitic and inter-spherulitic deformations. Polypropylene was selected due to its unique cross-hatched lamellar morphology facilitating inter-spherulitic deformation. A precursor film with a spherulitic structure was made under low-stress melt processing condition. A tangential lamellae-rich spherulite was created and identified with a positive birefringence sign. A sequential annealing process improved the crystalline structure, and in particular the thickness of the tangential lamellae. The annealing process proved to be critical for initiating the inter-spherulitic deformation. The post-extrusion process conditions …
