Drosophila Retina Simulation System And The Emergence Of Orientation Selectivity, Ziyu Liu, Yiran Zhuo, Zhuoyi Song
Journal of System Simulation
Abstract: To investigate the biophysical mechanisms underlying the Drosophila retinal computations, a piece of simulation software is constructed. By constructing the connectivity of the optical structure of the Drosophila compound eye with the neural network and retinal neuronal information encoding processes,, the retinal transformation from the light to the electrical signals is simulated. The photo-transduction model is optimized by a stochastic process. The generating mechanism of orientation selectivity (OS) is explored in the Drosophila retina's output neurons through a simulation system. Experiments show that with comparable simulation accuracy, the simulation speed increases by 40 times. The software can now be …

Short-Time Human Activity Recognition Based On Wavelet Features Matching, Benyue Su, Li Zhang, Qingxuan He, Min Sheng
Journal of System Simulation
Abstract: The selection of features is the key problem in the study of human activity recognition. In order to obtain sufficient and stable behavioral features, long-time behavioral data that exceed one behavior cycle are often processed, while short-time behavioral data with less than one behavioral cycle are usually unstable, making it difficult to achieve accurate and stable identification. This paper proposes a short-time human activity recognition method based on the combination of wavelet transform and template matching. Coefficient features are extracted using wavelet transform method. The features of the short-time test samples are matched with the features in the template …

A Multi-Resolution Simulation Modeling Method, Zhaopeng Liu, Xinhai Xu, Bowen Yuan, Jinlu Zhang
Journal of System Simulation
Abstract: Aiming at the resolution gap between the operation task issued by the high-level commanders and the simulation system model instructions in the human-in-the-loop simulation deduction, a multi-resolution modeling method based on behavior tree is proposed. By improving the behavior tree syntax, the low-resolution combat missions are disaggregated into high-resolution simulation system instructions. By designing a decision model embedded in the behavior tree, the problem of resource uncertainty and execution effect uncertainty faced in the execution of model instructions is solved. A combat scenario for seizing air supremacy is designed to verify the effectiveness of the method.

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
This thesis presents a path planning framework for a very-large-scale robotic (VLSR) system in an known obstacle environment, where the time-varying distributions of agents are applied to represent the multi-agent robotic system (MARS). A novel family of the multivariate skew-normal (MVSN) distributions is proposed based on the Bernoulli random field (BRF) referred to as the Bernoulli-random-field based skew-normal (BRF-SN) distribution. The proposed distributions are applied to model the agents’ distributions in an obstacle-deployed environment, where the obstacle effect is represented by a skew function and separated from the no-obstacle agents’ distributions. First, the obstacle layout is represented by a Hilbert …

Scheduling Electric Vehicle Charging For Grid Load Balancing, Zhixin Han, Katarina Grolinger, Miriam Capretz, Syed Mir
Electrical and Computer Engineering Publications
In recent years, electric vehicles (EVs) have been widely adopted because of their environmental benefits. However, the increasing volume of EVs poses capacity issues for grid operators as simultaneously charging many EVs may result in grid instabilities. Scheduling EV charging for grid load balancing has a potential to prevent load peaks caused by simultaneous EV charging and contribute to balance of supply and demand. This paper proposes a user-preference-based scheduling approach to minimize costs for the user while balancing grid loads. The EV owners benefit by charging when the electricity cost is lower, but still within the user-defined preferred charging …

This paper expands the authors’ prior work[1], which focuses on developing a convolutional neural network (CNN) model capable of mapping time-averaged, unsteady Reynold’s-averaged Navier-Stokes (URANS) simulations to higher resolution results informed by time-averaged detached eddy simulations (DES). The authors present improvements over the prior CNN autoencoder model that result from hyperparameter optimization, increased data set augmentation through the adoption of a patch-wise training approach, and the predictions of primitive variables rather than vorticity magnitude. The training of the CNN model developed in this study uses the same URANS and DES simulations of a transonic flow around several NACA 4-digit airfoils …

CCAC Theses and Dissertations
Deep neural networks used for image classification are highly susceptible to adversarial attacks. The de facto method to increase adversarial robustness is to train neural networks with a mixture of adversarial images and unperturbed images. However, this method leads to robust overfitting, where the network primarily learns to recognize one specific type of attack used to generate the images while remaining vulnerable to others after training. In this dissertation, we performed a rigorous study to understand whether combinations of state of the art data augmentation methods with Stochastic Weight Averaging improve adversarial robustness and diminish adversarial overfitting across a wide …

Integrating The Spatial Pyramid Pooling Into 3d Convolutional Neural Networks For Cerebral Microbleeds Detection, Andre Accioly Veira
CCAC Theses and Dissertations
Cerebral microbleeds (CMB) are small foci of chronic blood products in brain tissues that are critical markers for cerebral amyloid angiopathy. CMB increases the risk of symptomatic intracerebral hemorrhage and ischemic stroke. CMB can also cause structural damage to brain tissues resulting in neurologic dysfunction, cognitive impairment, and dementia. Due to the paramagnetic properties of blood degradation products, CMB can be better visualized via susceptibility-weighted imaging (SWI) than magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).CMB identification and classification have been based mainly on human visual identification of SWI features via shape, size, and intensity information. However, manual interpretation can be biased. Visual screening …

Deep learning achieves remarkable success through training using massively labeled datasets. However, the high demands on the datasets impede the feasibility of deep learning in edge computing scenarios and suffer from the data scarcity issue. Rather than relying on labeled data, animals learn by interacting with their surroundings and memorizing the relationships between events and objects. This learning paradigm is referred to as associative learning. The successful implementation of associative learning imitates self-learning schemes analogous to animals which resolve the challenges of deep learning. Current state-of-the-art implementations of associative memory are limited to simulations with small-scale and offline paradigms. Thus, …

Consumer Internet of Things (CIoT) manufacturers seek customer feedback to enhance their products and services, creating a smart ecosystem, like a smart home. Due to security and privacy concerns, blockchain-based federated learning (BCFL) ecosystems can let CIoT manufacturers update their machine learning (ML) models using end-user data. Federated learning (FL) uses privacy-preserving ML techniques to forecast customers' needs and consumption habits, and blockchain replaces the centralized aggregator to safeguard the ecosystem. However, blockchain technology (BCT) struggles with scalability and quick ledger expansion. In BCFL, local model generation and secure aggregation are other issues. This research introduces a novel architecture, emphasizing …
