Recent studies have shown that preservice elementary teachers in the United States do not have deep understandings of these concepts. Effective ways to improve preservice teachers' conceptual understanding of these concepts need to be identified. Citation: Rule, A. C., & Hallagan, J., editors. (2006). Preservice elementary teachers use drawings and make sets of materials to explain multiplication and division by fractions. Twenty years later, the national demand for mathematics, science and technology leaders has never been greater. The National Academies report - Rising Above the Gathering Storm and President Bush's American Competitiveness Initiative - address the growing concern that the United States is losing its competitive advantage as countries abroad invest heavily in the education and training of scientists and engineers. Parents, Guilt, And Forgiveness: The Effects Of Divorce On College Students Attending Private Christian Colleges, Kristin Deal Jan 2006

Parents, Guilt, And Forgiveness: The Effects Of Divorce On College Students Attending Private Christian Colleges, Kristin Deal

Growth: The Journal of the Association for Christians in Student Development

With national divorce statistics on a rise, higher education should consider its approach to meeting the needs of students from these homes. Specifically, faith-based institutions must think about the effects divorce has had on the faith development of students from divorced families. Using individual interviews and a focus group, I researched the experiences and faith development of seven students from divorced homes attending three private Christian institutions in Southern California. The qualitative nature of the study gave voice to the unique stories of these students.

Secondary Teacher Attitudes Toward Including English-Language Learners In Mainstream Classrooms, Jenelle Reeves Jan 2006

Secondary Teacher Attitudes Toward Including English-Language Learners In Mainstream Classrooms, Jenelle Reeves

Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Faculty Publications

Researchers have given limited attention to teacher attitudes toward inclusion of English-language learners (ELLs) in mainstream classrooms. The author explored four categories within secondary teacher attitudes toward ELL inclusion: (a) ELL inclusion, (b) coursework modification for ELLS, (c) professional development for working with ELLs, and (d) perceptions of language and language learning. Findings from a survey of 279 subject-area high school teachers indicate a neutral to slightly positive attitude toward ELL inclusion, a somewhat positive attitude toward coursework modification, a neutral attitude toward professional development for working with ELLs, and educator misconceptions regarding how second languages are learned.

Infrastructure and materials need replacement or repair; curriculum needs to be adapted to changing conditions; professional development for teachers is required, while means to retain experienced teachers and attract new ones need to be found. At the same time, children's' meaningful access to education has been threatened by various factors that reduce their attendance and participation in education, keeping some youth out of school altogether. This chapter argues that research in education in Tajikistan and the …
