- Untreated behavior problems in elementary school students can result in a trajectory of negative life outcomes, which include more failed courses, lower grade point averages, increased absenteeism, and higher retention rates compared to other students (Wagner et al., 1993). - Family-school partnerships and parental involvement in interventions and educational programs positively correlate with favorable outcomes for students, families, and teachers (e.g., Grolnick & Slowiaczek, 1994). - Conjoint Behavioral Consultation (CBC; Sheridan, Kratochwill, & Bergan, 1996; Sheridan & Kratochwill, in press) maintains promise as an evidence-based model for increasing ongoing, collaborative family-school interactions (Guli, 2005). - Conducted with parents and …

• With an increasing number of children presenting with health conditions, pediatric care has expanded from solely a medical definition to a more comprehensive service delivery approach that includes psychology and education (Perrin, 1999). • An interdisciplinary, inter-systemic approach is necessary to meet the needs of children across systems (Power, Shapiro, & DuPaul, 2003). • School psychologists are uniquely qualified to facilitate collaboration between settings and systems due to their expertise in consultation and intervention. • Roles in pediatric school psychology include: advocating for children’s educational and social needs; consulting with care providers, families, and educators; and facilitating collaboration among …

The Effects Of Critical Literacy According To Bloom's Taxonomy Cognition, Jennifer L. Virelli
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to accept the hypothesis that kindergarten students who were introduced to critical literacy lessons could learn and increase their higher level thinking skills according to Bloom's Taxonomy of Cognition than kindergarten students who were not instructed in critical literacy. The experimental group consisted of fifteen kindergarten students and the control group included eighteen kindergarten students. The demographics of the experimental classroom included seven Caucasian students, six African American students, and two Hispanic students. Five of the students received free lunch. The specific classroom in which the study was performed was a general education kindergarten …

Effective Letter Identification Activities For K-1 Children: A Handbook For Teachers, Luann Nicole Jensen
All Graduate Projects
The purpose of this project is to provide K-1 teachers with a handbook of effective letter identification activities. Letter identification is a pre-requisite reading skill that students must have in order to be successful readers and to prevent reading difficulties later on. This handbook can be implemented by teachers of kindergarten or first grade children who need a letter identification intervention. The lessons in this project were developed to be paired with explicit, intensive teaching during the intervention to help remediate a child's weakness in identifying letters.

DeFiore (2006) provides a comprehensive review of elements that have shaped the state of special education in Catholic schools. The article speaks of the bishops’ vision without teeth and the theoretical support provided under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act of 2004 (IDEIA). DeFiore discusses the demand for services that are not met because of a lack of resources, expertise, and funding. The article concludes by allowing that much has occurred over the past decade, but more is needed.
To meet this need, DeFiore states that diocesan and local leaders must face the challenge of inspiring the laity to …

Children are biologically wired to experience their world through rich sensory, affective, aesthetic, and imaginal experiences. Children thirst for art, music and movement, and these modes are utilized widely to learn the varied languages of literacy: the alphabet, numbers, vocabulary, body-sense and more. Yet, in response to meeting higher and more prescribed standards at the elementary and secondary levels, there is a tendency to narrow the curriculum, to consider art and music expendable, to view social-emotional development as external to the schoolhouse. This narrowing is happening just as our global culture is moving again toward multiple kinds of communication: toward …

Pediatric School Psychology -With an increasing number of children with chronic health conditions, the concept of pediatric care has expanded from a primarily medical emphasis to one that is more comprehensive and includes the disciplines of psychology and education (Perrin, 1999). -Children with developmental disabilities experience symptoms that affect their physical, academic, behavioral, developmental, and social functioning; therefore, collaboration among interdisciplinary professionals is essential. -Pediatric school psychology represents an “emergence of a subspecialty” within school psychology and includes the competencies of both school psychology and health psychology (Power, DuPaul, Shapiro, & Parrish, 1995). -Pediatric school psychologists serve as a liaison …

“The successful education of the child during her/his years of schooling and the participation of that child in society as an adult, depends to a greater degree upon the foundation laid during the early years” (Evans, Myers and IIfled, 2000, p.7). Research indicates that learning is crucial to development whereby knowledge, skills, attitudes and values are developed. Research from disciplines such as physiology, nutrition, health, sociology, psychology and education provide evidence indicating that the early years are crucial in terms of developing intelligence, personality and social behaviour of children. If children are not provided opportunities to communicate, learn and develop …

The Sustainment Of Early Childhood Teachers In The Classroom, Pamela A. Kilgallon
The Sustainment Of Early Childhood Teachers In The Classroom, Pamela A. Kilgallon
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
The changing nature of teaching has led to an increased focus on the retention and productive engagement of teachers in the classrooms. The ongoing implementation of educational change, accompanied by an ageing trend amongst teachers and rising incidences of teacher attrition, stress and burnout, highlights the importance of teachers being sustained in their profession. Furthermore, recognition of the value of early childhood education has drawn attention to early childhood teachers' abilities to be sustained in their teaching practice, effectively engaging students in the learning process. Acknowledging these issues, this study examined factors that influence early childhood classroom teachers' sustainment in …
