Journal of Mathematics and Science: Collaborative Explorations

The purpose of this study was to determine if reformed science and math courses at community colleges and the university were impacting education majors as they began a teaching career. The reformed courses, in contrast to typical lecture classes, implemented inquiry-based methods that emphasized deep understanding of fundamental science and math concepts. Trained evaluators, utilizing the Reformed Teaching Observation Protocol (RTOP) gathered a total of 86 classroom observations to gauge the level of reform that beginning teachers (one to three years’ teaching experience) were implementing in grades 5-12. Christian colleges wrestle with the creation and maintenance of regulations for correct behavior of campus members (lifestyle agreements). Using theoretical considerations as well as specific application examples, a way is presented to create a lifestyle agreement that is internally consistent and fits the needs of the campus. Specifically, the effect of external constituencies, organizational efficiency, and, most importantly, efforts to develop community, are used to guide the construction of lifestyle agreements. As students are increasingly influenced by postmodern thought, which promotes ideas of community without a common center and emphasizes difference, so students may have fresh conceptualizations of what community is and how it functions. This study explored students' conceptions, experiences, and ideals of community.

The tension between commonality and diversity within community has caused much debate in the social sciences. Interviewees, who were students at member institutions of the CCCU, recognize the same tension and often struggle to navigate their relationships within a collegiate environment that promotes both.

This article is a transcription of an address presented by Dr. David McKenna at a recent pre-conference workshop at an ACPA conference. The workshop was sponsored by ACSD in conjunction with the annual prayer breakfast. Three Surveys On Adult Esol Pronunciation: Teachers, Students, Textbooks, Hortensia Louro Bernal

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

This study used three instruments to examine the current state of the teaching of ESOL pronunciation. These instruments included a survey of 62 teachers, another survey of 508 ESOL students, and a comparative study of ten pronunciation textbooks in widespread use since 1990. The purpose of the study was to characterize the teaching of pronunciation at present through the voices of the teachers, the opinions of the students, and the content of the textbooks.
