The literature has pointed toward changes in high school curriculum as a contributor to the decline of standardized test scores during the 1960's and 1970's. During the past few years, many schools have increased graduation requirements in various subject areas in an effort to increase learning on the part of students. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of the number of years of required study in various subject areas on student achievement.

This paper examines the origins of and effects on my teaching of several personal and professional conflicts with the teacher-training process, and with subsequent classroom teaching. I describe their development in relation to my previous education, work experience, and mental "habits," and compare my prior medical training with that of a language teacher. Particular attention is paid to how the different epistemologies have affected my outlook as a teacher.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between mobility and the standardized testing environment. The project focused on nine students who had a pronounced need for movement while learning and/or being tested. The study was conducted to determine whether the achievement scores of these nine students would be influenced by the denial or availability of movement while they were administered a standardized reading test. Twenty-one second grade students were the subjects. Two forms of Level B of the Gates-MacGinitie Reading Test were used. Purpose. The purpose of this study was to determine the perceptions of beginning teachers in Indiana secondary schools concerning twenty selected classroom management skills. The study sought information about the perceived importance of, and level of training and ability in, each skill. What Have We Learned From Process Models Of Conversion? An Examination Of Ten Case Studies, David Rudy

Many attempts to understand the conversion process have been guided by Lofland and Stark's (1965) "process-mode." We examine ten case studies of the conversion process in diverse groups in order to specify the conditions under which the Lofland-Stark model applies. Several components of the model are rejected for conceptual reasons. Other components are to be found in some types of groups but not in others. Only "formation of affective bonds with group members" and "intensive interaction with group members" seem to be indispensable prerequisites for conversion. This study was a descriptive investigation of English department evaluation. It emphasized characteristics of departments at the national and state level which the National Council of Teachers of English and the Georgia Council of Teachers of English have recognized. The purpose of the investigation was to determine which of these characteristics the English department of a local high school met and to establish priorities for improving that department. This pilot study investigated the usage of Feuerstein’s (1980) Instrumental Enrichment with underprepared college students. Open admissions policies in colleges and universities have resulted in the enrollment of many students who are underprepared to meet the academic task demands. Courses have been developed by the colleges and universities to remediate the academic deficits of underprepared students. Remedial courses using traditional educational methods have been largely ineffective. This report's methodology involves comparing the average local population per store for a particular business with state averages for that business to determine whether sufficient population exists to support a new business. By using this methodology, 382 prospective business opportunities have been identified out of a possible 1,416. The potential opportunities are divided into the retail , service, and construction sectors and are targeted for 12 market areas within Appalachian Kentucky.

Conversion To The World View Of Alcoholics Anonymous: A Refinement Of Conversion Theory, David R. Rudy, Arthur L. Greil

Most empirical studies of the conversion process have focused on individuals who have come to espouse the world view of a deviant religious denomination or sect. Using observational data our research analyzes the conversion process by which individuals come to identify with the ideology propounded by Alcoholics Anonymous (A.A.). A.A. provides prospective "alcoholics" with both a solution to drinking problems and an overarching world view with which to reinterpret their past experience. The A.A. conversion process can be divided into six phases: hitting bottom, first stepping, making a commitment, accepting your problem, telling your story, and doing Twelfth Step work. …

Macroinvertebrates Of The Big Sandy River Basin With Special Emphasis On The Levisa Fork, Gerald Demoss

This distributional study of the aquatic macroinvertebrates of the Big Sandy River Basin was based on a review of published literatu re and utilized other professional sources. Data generated include 493 taxa of aquatic macroinvertebrates from the Big Sandy River and its tributaries and from adjacent drainages within the counties of the Big Sandy River Basin. Taxa represented in the study, including the 360 taxa occurring within the Levisa Fork Drainage, are generally distributed fauna in the eastern United States and none of t hese representatives are considered as rare, th reatened or endangered.

The Effect Of Graphic And Phonemic Similarity On Syntactic Acceptability, Barbara D. Barket

The main purpose of this study was to determine the effect of graphic and phonemic similarity on syntactic acceptability. Ten third graders were audio-taped reading material new to them at the end of the 1982-1983 school year. The children were given no assistance. Substitution miscues were recorded and analyzed according to The Goodman Taxonomy of Reading Miscues. Statistical analyses were carried out using the chi-square procedure and contingency coefficients were computed. The results indicate that graphic and phonemic similarity are somewhat related to syntactic acceptability but the relationship is very slight. The Cloze Procedure: A Measure Of Reading Comprehension Ability, Theresa Lorene Donaldson

The present study was conducted in order to determine if a relationship exists between those comprehension processes measured by the Paragraph Comprehension subtest of the McGraw-Hill Basic Skills System Reading Test and the cloze test developed for this project. Two classes of undergraduate education majors enrolled in “Foundations of Performance-Based Education” were administered both the cloze test and the multiple choice comprehension test.

A correlation coefficient was computed between the summary scores on the McGraw-Hill and the summary scores on the cloze test. The results yielded a correlation of .021. These results did not support the research hypothesis.

The major focus of the study is directed toward the impact of increased mining activity on population, settlement patterns, land use, and the economic structure of the coal-rich basin.
