The purposes of the study were: (a) to determine the types of professional development in which elementary teachers voluntarily participated and the extent of that participation, and (b) to investigate the relationships between school climate and teachers' participation, enrollment size and teachers' participation, and enrollment size and school climate.

The survey included all of the 356 regular elementary school teachers in two southwestern Michigan school districts who each held a tenured position and was assigned to a building with the same principal for at least the 1980-81 and 1981-82 years. The number of schools was 15 in District A and …

The eastern portion of Kentucky has long had insufficient tax revenues available to provide quality public services for local residents. Probably the best known and most widely used technique for studying teaching in order to improve it is classroom interaction analysis (Dunkin & Biddle, 1974; Peterson & Walberg, 1979). The coding ot classroom communication (usually verbal) according to category schemes has been used extensively and successfully in preservice and inservice education as a way of making teachers aware of and subsequently improving their own teaching. Used for this purpose, interaction analysis has provided teachers with a method of obtaining specific feedback on their classroom practice and a firm basis for reflection, discussion, and improvement related to their teaching.

The Competency-Based Program For Preparation And Certification Of School Principals At Central Washington University: An Analysis Of Costs Incurred In Development, Implementation, And Maintenance Phases--1975-1980, Glenda Sue Shannon

Preparation and certification of school principals at Central Washington University have developed according to the requirements of the Washington State Standards. This study determined the real and estimated costs for the development, implementation, and operation of the competency-based, principal preparation program. A questionnaire elicited data from participants and revealed that professional time devoted to the project incurred the greatest costs. The developmental period was determined to be the most expensive phase. An instrument for future data collection was devised and recommended.

Spivack and Shure’s (1974) Interpersonal Cognitive Problem-Solving (ICPS) model was evaluated on Educable Mentally Retarded (EMR) children. The major question was whether the implementation of Shure and Spivack’s (1978) Kindergarten Interpersonal Problem-Solving Program (KIPS) would enhance the ICPS skills and behavioral adjustment of EMR children up to the level needed for successful integration into the regular classroom. The study included 40 EMR children from ages eight to fourteen. The subjects were divided equally into two groups, one receiving Shure and Spivack’s (1978) KIPS program and one receiving informal social skills training. Four-day-old Vantress x Arbor Acre chicks were tested for key-peck passive avoidance (PA) learning following intraperitoneal injections of parachlorophenylalanine (PCPA) and/or scopolamine. In Experiment 1, chicks were pre-treated with either three or five injections of PCPA (150 mg/kg) or saline across the first three posthatch days and then tested for PA learning on the fourth posthatch day. In Experiment 2, chicks were first pre-treated with three injections of PCPA (150 mg/kg) or saline, and then injected with either scopolamine (0.5 mg/kg) or saline 20 rain prior to PA testing on the fourth posthatch day. Atropine Disrupts Passive Avoidance Learning In Young Chicks T, Bruce A. Mattingly, James F. Zolman

Four-day-old Vantress × Arbor Acre chicks were first trained to key-peck for heat reinforcement and then tested for passive avoidance learning following an intraperitoneal injection of atropine sulfate or saline. Chicks injected with 1.0 mg/kg of atropine responded more quickly than saline-injected chicks when their key-peck responses were punished with aversive wing-shocks. These findings, therefore, are consistent with the view that cholinergic mechanisms are involved in inhibitory behavior in the young domestic chick.

Death Education In U.S. Medical Schools: 1975-1980, George E. Dickinson

Surveys from 1975 and 1980 of U.S. medical schools' offerings in death education are compared. A 95 and 96 percent return rate, respectively, for each survey revealed a slight increase in offerings in 1980. A team approach is used, with physicians and theologians most often being cited as facilitators of a lecture/ discussion format.

The study addresses two specific issues influencing the production of coal from small mines: 1) the direct costs and other effects of government regulation and deregulation on coal operators in general, and 2) the effects of governmental policies on the productivity by size (tonnage) class of small coal mines. Appalachian Kentucky was used as the study area because of the wide range of mine firm sizes.

The Lchthyofauna Of The Big Sandy River Basin, With Special Emphasis On The Levisa Fork Drainage, Jerry F. Howell Jr.

A literature and regional repository review of the Big Sandy Basin ichthyofouno yielded 111 confirmed species, including 93 from Leviso Fork and its tributaries. Twenty-nine additional species were added to the lost published comprehensive review (Jenkins et al., 1972); one species was not re-confirmed. The 111 forms (108 confirmed or probable) included 14 known or suspected introductions and 20 species (including 12 recently collected from Leviso Fork) with special Kentucky Nature Preserves Commission status codes. The two most threatened Kentucky species were Percino macrocephala and Ammocrypto pellucido.

This study was designed to evaluate mainstreaming in-service training practices for regular teachers which result in successful child change. The research design implemented was a quasi-experimental, nonequivalent control group design with a pretest and a posttest. There were three comparison groups: (a) mainstreamed children and classes of regular teachers who participated in a practicum model of mainstreaming in-service, (b) mainstreamed children and classes of regular teachers who participated in a videotape model of mainstreaming in-service, and (c) mainstreamed children and classes of regular teachers who received no treatment (control group) .

During the 1979-80 school year, two Algebra I classes were involved in a study to test the effects of two methods for reviewing homework problems on students' achievements and attitudes. One review procedure was to solve and explain each problem during the class period that followed the class period in which the homework assignment had been made. An analysis of the Tolt Junior-Senior High School faculty's use of instructional media showed a need for a program designed to increase the effective use of the Learning Resource Center's available media. This project consisted of developing a series of inservice classes designed to train the teachers to better utilize the overhead, opaque, slide, filmstrip, and 16mm projectors, tape recorders, VTR, microfiche reader/printer, and dry mount press. Appropriate examples have been produced in each medium and a tool created for the evaluation of the inservice program.

A Study Guide For Eigth Grade Developmental Reading Based On Cooper And Petrosky's Strategies, Barbara Ann Trezise

A study guide, to increase students' ability to use study skills, to read expository and narrative material with greater fluency, and to maintain positive attitudes towards reading, was developed using Cooper and Petrosky's (1976) "A Psycholinguistic View of the Fluent Reading Process." Sequential lessons were designed from available printed materials. A pre/post test attitude scale, study habits survey, and standardized reading achievement tests were administered. Modified miscue analysis provided diagnostic information.

The purposes of this study were to compare the mean achievement of students in a Quantitative Physical Science class in which the members were allowed to select their own partners with students in a Quantitative Physical Science class in which partners were assigned on the basis of high-low test scores and to compare mean achievement of students in a Quantitative Physical Science class that used audio-visual material with the mean achievement of students in a Quantitative Physical Science class that used no audio-visual material.
