Small faith-based liberal arts institutions are increasingly focused on recruitment and retention because it is critical to their existence. Because these institutions are completely enrollment driven, the numbers of students who persist through to their second year of college is a necessary administrative focus. Scholars have found that interactions between students and members of the institution, especially faculty, are critical to student persistence during the first year of College. Research has also demonstrated that academic advising plays an important role in first-year student persistence. The authors discuss in this article how universities and colleges would be served well if students were being exposed to people who exemplify and illustrate in their daily lives the values of their institution. Our goal is to illuminate why academic advisers, other academic affairs professionals, and faculty can (and should) serve as role models who exemplify the mission, vision, and values of an institution. This would enable students to learn about the institution's mission and also how to live lives of magnanimity and integrity.

Objective: The purpose of this study is to determine important factors influencing athletic training student's graduate program choice. Design and Settings: A 37-item web-based survey entitled Athletic Training (AT) Student's Graduate Program Choice Survey was developed based on a comprehensive literature review. The survey was grouped as follows: 10 demographic, 17 Likert-scale, 2 "yes/no", 2 "check all that apply", and 6 "select the best answer" questions. Three PhD ATCs reviewed the survey for content importance. Readability was edited twice using graduate and undergraduate athletic training students (ATS) feedback, respectively. Peer Helping is widely implemented in Colleges and Universities in the United States and Canada. Despite the popularity of these programs, very little has been researched on peer helping in the Asian context. This paper traces the theoretical foundations of peer helping and the nascent development of a peer helping program in the Singapore Management University and how this program has developed since the beginning of 2004. The initial focus of the program was based on the model of paraprofessional student counselors assisting their fellow peers through difficult moments in their lives. The lack of research studies relevant to faculty attitudes impacting the learning environment for learning disabled students led this research to investigate the actual practices of faculty teaching accommodations in the classroom context. 111 This study was conducted with 523 faculty members at Indiana State University, a midsize Midwestern university. 160 faculty members responded to a survey of required and recommended accommodations made for learning disabled students in the classroom and the statistical data analysis included descriptive statistics, t-tests, and logistic regression. This study identified a significant relationship between Adult Attention Deficit Disorder (Adult ADD) characteristics and the Old Dominion University Freshman Survey Probation Score. The Probation Score is used to identify potential academically at risk freshmen students. Academically at risk is defined as those students with less than a 2.0 GPA. The research found that as the number and severity of Adult ADD characteristics increased, as measured utilizing the Brown Adult ADD Scales, the higher the Probation Score. The study also identified a significant negative relationship between Adult ADD characteristics, as measured utilizing the Brown Adult ADD Scales, and GPA of …

There is increasing interest in using situational judgment tests (SJTs) to supplement traditional student admission procedures. An important unexplored issue is whether students can intentionally distort or fake their responses on SJTs. This study examined the fakability of an SJT of college students' performance. Two hundred ninety-three psychology students completed a cognitive test, a personality measure, and an SJT. Only for the SJT, the students were assigned to either an honest or a fake condition. The scores of students in the fake condition were significantly higher than those of students in the honest condition (d = .89). Furthermore, faking had …

This study explored the impact of place of residence on the academic achievement and retention of full-time, first-time-in-college students at an urban, public, primarily commuter university in the Southeast. Three groups of subjects were compared to ascertain if any group differences existed in regard to mean freshman grade point average, grades earned in a common course taken (Freshman English I), and retention into the second year of study. The three subject groups that were compared included residential learning community, traditional residence hall, and commuter students.

This study identified noncognitive factors (via the use of discriminant analysis) that impact freshmen academic performance and retention in a community college setting. The study used a modified version of the Freshman Survey, that had been validated for use at an urban four-year institution, to determine the predictive validity of the instrument for use with first semester freshmen in a two-year college setting. Existing research suggests that cognitive factors can, at most, explain 10 to 20 percent of the variance in student retention and academic performance. In the 1990s, due in part to declining enrollment numbers and prolonged budget constraints, student retention became a primary focus in higher education. Aligned with the nationwide interest, this longitudinal, archival study focused on the correlates of student retention at Walters State Community College, located in Morristown, Tennessee. The population involved 17,497 students enrolled from the fall semester of 1992 through the fall semester of 1997. Four sets of variables were investigated--demographic variables, pre-matriculation variables, post-matriculation variables related to grades, and post-matriculation variables related to enrollment. The amount of variation in leadership style predicted by cognitive complexity and empathy was investigated. Differences in cognitive complexity and empathic ability according to students' educational levels and leadership styles was also tested. Leadership style was determined by Fiedler's (1967) Least Preferred Coworker (LPC) measure; cognitive complexity was defined by the Cognitive Complexity Index (CCI), a subscale of the Learning Environment Preferences (LEP; Moore, 1987) instrument which measures Perry's (1998) scheme of intellectual and ethical development; and empathy was measured by Hogan's Scale of Empathy (1969) as scored on the Hogan/Em subscale of the California Psychological Inventory (CPI; Gough, 1987). …

A review of the literature revealed that there does seem to be a positive relationship between faculty-student interaction and the student's retention at the university level. Students are also more likely to persist if they have become involved in out of class activities.
