The purpose of this study was to investigate certain differences or similarities that exist between students presently attending a progressive school in Albuquerque, New Mexico; and students who have traditional high schools in Albuquerque, New Mexico; and students who have applied to attend Freedom High School. The latter group was comprised of students presently attending conventional high schools and former students who had already dropped out of school and were not currently engaged in a formal educational experience.

The Effects Of Perceptual-Motor Training On The Perceptual-Motor Skills Of Emotionally Disturbed Children, Karen R. Brown

A study was conducted to determine if the program of perceptual-motor training outlined by D.H. Radler and Newell C. Kephart in their book, Success Through Play, would increase the perceptual-motor skills of emotionally disturbed children as measured by the Purdue Perceptual Motor Survey. Twenty children from the Portland, Oregon metropolitan area whose ages ranged from six to twelve years were included in the program. These children were grouped according to their diagnosis of withdrawn or acting-out which was received by the agency upon their referral. Three agencies participated in the study.

In 1965 the researcher investigated the mentally retarded students enrolled in the davenport, Iowa, Taylor and Marquette Schools and compared them to their parents and siblings. This paper presents a study of the effects of systematic phonics and contingency management on reading achievement with intermediate special education students. The thirtysix week program was divided into four phases. The four equivalent forms of the Gray Oral Reading Tests were used as measuring devices. No statistically significant results were found by using the Gray Oral Reading Tests as measuring devices. Statistically significant results were found on graph data.

Recommendations included: (1) the use of different reading tests other than the Gray Oral Reading Tests as measuring devices and (2) that the study be conducted longer than thirty-six weeks.

This study presents a comparison of grade level achievement for secondary special education students of non-reinforcement and reinforcement periods. The program was designed for 26 special education students between grade 9 through 12 at Selah High School. A statistical evaluation was done between the non-reinforcement and reinforcement periods.

Recommendation included that the program may be an effective means of educating secondary special education students.

For many years a difference of opinion has existed regarding the classroom placement of "emotionally disturbed" children into special classes. The majority of public school districts offer two placements into their special classes: heterogenous or homogeneous grouping. Homogeneous grouping of these children seems to cause a "boomeranging" effect on reinforcement of their disruptive behavior. The purpose of the investigation was to examine the effectiveness of a learning theory approach to group counseling with fifth grade "problem" students. The study was designed to determine whether group counseling using the Winning Game Approach would decrease disruptive classroom behavior.

Procedures

The subjects for the study consisted of eighteen fifth grade students. Twelve of the students were identified by their teachers as having the most difficulty adapting to the classroom setting. Six of the students were identified by their-teachers as having adjusted well to the classroom setting.

Recognizing a need to develop religious instructional material for mentally retarded seminary students of the L.D.S. Church, this study was designed to validate an instructional model set up to teach the concept of faith.

Thirty-four mentally retarded seminary students were randomly assigned to six control groups and six experimental groups. Each group was given a sixteen question pre-test. Then, the next day each experimental group was given instructional treatment and the post-test, while the control groups only received the post-test.
