The Effects Of Three-Dimensional Objects Vs. Two-Dimensional Objects In A Serial Positions Task On The Short-Term Memory Of Elementary School Children With Low Intelligence, Alice Dye Maechtlen

Special Education ETDs

The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of three-dimensional stimuli versus two-dimensional stimuli in a serial positions task on the short-term memory of elementary school children with low intelligence. The specific hypothesis was that elementary school children with low intelligence would have greater short-term memory response accuracy on a serial positions task with three-dimensional objects than with two-dimensional objects. Fourteen fourth, fifth, and sixth graders whose IQ scores ranged from 60 to 85 were selected from regular classrooms in a middle income area in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Each subject was given the serial positions task with the …

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

The encouragement of individual self-improvement and enlightenment through the process of a formal education is basic to the social system of our nation. College and university administrators are therefore faced with a practical exigency for understanding those factors that are associated with academic achievement. (During the past several years there has been increasing evidence that college achievement is dependent upon something more than intellectual ability. From experience, the average counselor in a college or university has become aware of this fact time and time again. Some studies have gone further and suggested specific personality characteristics of successful and unsuccessful students. …

Critical Examination Of Outcomes For Emotionally Disturbed Boys In A Special Classroom, Betty F. Lauritzen

All Master's Theses

This paper presents a critical examination of outcomes for emotionally disturbed boys in the Special Learning Class. The classroom was designed to modify inappropriate behavior and remediate academic deficiencies.

Behavioral characteristics of thirty-one boys were divided into three categories: the overtly aggressive sub-sample, the passive-resistant subsample, and the infantile subsample. Case studies considered to be modal suggest the success of teacher-authority, token reinforcement, and behavior modification techniques depends on the quality of student-teacher interactions.

Effects Of A Contingency Management Program On Reading Rate And Spread Of Effect With Primary Mildly Intellectually Disabled Children, Leo Carl Beck

All Master's Theses

This paper presents a study dealing with increasing reading rate, with primary, language delayed youngsters. The program was designed to see if rate could be increased with contingent (CRF) as opposed to differential (DRO) reinforcement with no drop in selected variables (comprehension, vocabulary, articulation and auditory discrimination). Reinforcement consisted of tokens paired with social praise. Rate did increase for the duration of the study and the selected variables remained essentially constant.

Recommendations include replication of the study with precise administration of schedules.

During phase III, the teacher systematically decreased the level of positive attention until the "minimum level of reinforcement," i.e.. ten per cent teacher positive attention was reach. During phase IV, material rewards were delivered to all class members contingent upon co-operative …

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The purpose of this study is to determine the effectiveness of 20 hours of remedial reading instruction as compared with 20 hours of vocabulary instruction on a select group of university freshmen in the Remedial English Program. Three measures of effectiveness used were comprehension, rate, and effective reading rate. The results indicated that for this particular population, using the materials and instructional techniques described, neither group increased reading rate at the .01 level of significance. The effective reading rate of the …
