Vocabulary Knowledge Within Young Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder, Hannah A. Lord
Vocabulary Knowledge Within Young Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder, Hannah A. Lord
Masters Projects
Young children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) are consistently experiencing a “definitional gap”, where they are able to process vocabulary breadth within labeling but are unable to comprehend text due to the lack of vocabulary depth. The four week vocabulary unit titled “Our World in Words” is created to bridge the gap between vocabulary breadth and depth for first graders. Research in Dual Coding Theory and Cognitive Load Theory provides insight into the use of stable visual anchors with orthographic facilitation, which allows for the disregard of auditory processing, along with an overloaded cognitive load. This framework includes four important …
Comparing Error Correction Strategies In Discrete Trial Training For Children With Autism, Rachael Litchford
Comparing Error Correction Strategies In Discrete Trial Training For Children With Autism, Rachael Litchford
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present
Children diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) often require structured, evidence-based teaching methods to promote skill acquisition. Discrete Trial Training (DTT) is one such approach widely used in Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) to teach skills through repeated learning opportunities. However, limited research has compared the efficiency of specific error correction procedures within DTT. This study examined the comparative effectiveness of two error correction strategies, Active Student Response (ASR) and Model-Only, when acquiring tacting skills for children ages 2-10 with ASD. An alternating treatments design (ATD) was used to evaluate each strategy’s impact on skill acquisition, as measured by the percentage …

Many children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) display elevated levels of challenging behaviors and decreased social engagement. Parent Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT) may help children with ASD increase rates at which they engage and interact with their caregivers. Existing barriers to treatment completion, including high attrition and travel time and costs, may be ameliorated by delivering PCIT virtually (iPCIT) and setting attainable mastery criteria. This study utilized a multiple baseline design across three caregiver-child dyads with ASD to determine whether an iPCIT protocol affected caregivers’ use of positive engagement skills, children’s engagement, and children’s challenging behaviors. Results demonstrated increased and …

How Does Inclusive Education Affect Students With Autism Spectrum Disorder In Elementary Schools?, Kacie M. Coe
All Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Children diagnosed with autism are at an all-time high of 1 in 31 children (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention 2025). What does this mean for our schools and students with autism? Inclusive education is more renowned than ever. What is now known as the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) was enacted in 1975, and guarantees every child with a disability access to a free appropriate public education (FAPE) in the least restrictive environment (LRE). Inclusion, in theory, appears to be the right decision for all our students, but what are the schools doing to prepare for these exceptional …

Aging Out: Life With Autism After School Ends, Emily Katherine Brown
West Chester University Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Final Projects
This thesis examines the challenges autistic individuals face after graduating from the school system, a transition often marked by a sudden loss of structured support. During school aged years, students are guaranteed services such as individualized education programs (IEPs), therapies, and transition planning through age 21 or 22. However, once these protections end, many autistic adults encounter what is commonly referred to as the “service cliff,” where access to essential supports becomes limited, inconsistent, or entirely unavailable.
The absence of adult services creates significant barriers in areas such as employment, housing, healthcare, and community integration. Many individuals who relied on …

The purpose of this hermeneutic phenomenological study was to explore and describe the lived experiences of developing healthy friendships for twice-exceptional adults with autism spectrum disorder (2e/ASD) in the southeastern United States. The theory guiding this study was Schlossberg’s transition theory, as it provided a framework for understanding how individuals navigate significant changes in relationships, routines, assumptions, and roles. The central research question guiding this study was: What do 2e/ASD adults in the southeastern United States experience as they develop healthy friendships? The study employed a qualitative design using van Manen’s hermeneutic phenomenology to capture the essence of participants’ lived …
Promoting Inclusion Through Evidence-Based Behavior Management: Effective Interventions For Students With Asd In General Education, Emma Kaiser
Masters Projects
As diagnoses of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) continue to rise, general education classrooms are increasingly responsible for meeting the needs of students with ASD. However, many teachers lack the training and resources necessary to manage challenging behaviors effectively. This knowledge gap often results in exclusionary practices such as restraint, seclusion, and suspension, which act as barriers to inclusion. The purpose of this project is to equip educators with evidence-based behavior management strategies that support inclusive practices. Drawing from current research, the project organizes effective interventions into three key categories: preventing challenging behaviors, teaching alternative skills, and reinforcing positive behaviors. Each …

An Evaluation Of Using Linked Digital Activity Schedules To Teach Sociodramatic Play, Nicholas Lindgren
An Evaluation Of Using Linked Digital Activity Schedules To Teach Sociodramatic Play, Nicholas Lindgren
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present
Individuals with ASD often have difficulties communicating with peers and navigating social interactions (APA, 2022). Building these skills may help these individuals interact with peers, siblings, and others in the community. One area where individuals with ASD may need support is engaging in play. Specifically, in engaging in sociodramatic play (i.e., pretend play that involves role-playing aspects of real life). Traditionally, applied behavior analysis (ABA) and activity schedules are evidence-based approaches that have been used to teach play behaviors to individuals with ASD. However, few researchers have evaluated how a linked digital activity schedule can increase the sociodramatic play responding …

The Impact Of Educators’ Perceptions Of Neurodivegence On Their Self-Efficacy In Teaching Middle And High School Students With Adhd And Autism In Rural Minnesota, Nicolle D. Bettcher Erickson
Dissertations, Theses, and Projects
ABSTRACT
The purpose of this phenomenological qualitative study was to explore how we can best support our teachers in matching our ever-changing educational landscape, specifically our neurodivergent learners. When educating neurodivergent students (students with autism or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder), we must understand how to teach these creative, sometimes misunderstood individuals and unleash their full potential. To do so, we need educational practitioners who have healthy perceptions of what it means to be neurodivergent and educators who understand both the talents and hurdles that being neurodivergent may entail. This study examined how non-special education teachers' perceptions of neurodivergence correlated with …

How Do Couples Of Autistic Children Perceive Their Quality Of Life? A Case Study Featuring Sequential Mixed Methodology, Amanda Duncan Dr.
How Do Couples Of Autistic Children Perceive Their Quality Of Life? A Case Study Featuring Sequential Mixed Methodology, Amanda Duncan Dr.
Theses and Dissertations--Early Childhood, Special Education, and Counselor Education
Families who have autistic children report significantly lower quality of life indicators than neurotypical families and those with other developmental disabilities (Bitsika & Sharpley, 2004; Brown et al., 2006; Charnsil & Bathia, 2010; De Sousa, 2010; Merkaj et al., 2013). However, the reports fluctuate between family members as mothers report more mental health challenges than fathers, including stress, anxiety, and depression (Dabrowska & Pstiula, 2010; Hodapp et al., 2003; Merkaj et al., 2013). Yet, these findings are based on the limited research that has been done on fathers and couples (Cheuk & Lashewicz, 2015; Osborne & Reed, 2008; Papageorgiou & …

Evaluation Of An Instructional Sequence To Promote The Emergence Of Convergent Intraverbals In Children With Autism, Jesika Woodard
Evaluation Of An Instructional Sequence To Promote The Emergence Of Convergent Intraverbals In Children With Autism, Jesika Woodard
Theses
Skinner (1957) defined intraverbal as a type of verbal behavior in which the
response form has no point-to-point correspondence with its verbal stimulus and is
followed by generalized conditioned reinforcement. Verbal behavior can be influenced
by multiple controlling variables, with convergent and divergent control being two
distinct types of this influence. In convergent intraverbals, multiple components of
antecedent verbal stimuli control a specific verbal response of the speaker. An example of
an intraverbal response under convergent control may be "banana" when asked, "What is
a fruit that is yellow?" De Souza et al. (2019) evaluated the effects of teaching …

Differential Effects Of Physical Activity On Social Interactions Of Adolescents With Autism Spectrum Disorder, Christianna Blanchard-Alworth
Human Movement Studies & Special Education Theses & Dissertations
Adolescents with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) often experience challenges with communication, social interaction, and motor skills, which can contribute to social isolation. A growing body of research suggests physical activity (PA) may improve social, physical fitness, and gross motor outcomes for adolescents with ASD. Although exercise and PA have been identified as an evidence-based practice (EBP) for this population, limited research has specifically examined the relationship between PA and social interactions. This study used an alternating treatment design, replicated across four adolescents with ASD, to compare the effects of two interventions – soccer instruction and fitness instruction - on social …
