Student-Created Test Sheets, Samuel Laderach Apr 2017

Student-Created Test Sheets, Samuel Laderach

Honors Projects

Assessment plays a necessary role in the high school mathematics classroom, and testing is a major part of assessment. Students often struggle with mathematics tests and examinations due to math and test anxiety, a lack of student learning, and insufficient and inefficient student preparation. Practice tests, teacher-created review sheets, and student-created test sheets are ways in which teachers can help increase student performance, while ridding these detrimental factors. Student-created test sheets appear to be the most efficient strategy, and this research study examines the effects of their use in a high school mathematics classroom.

Transformative Models In K-12 Education: The Impact Of A Blended Universal Design For Learning Intervention, Kai Monet Mathews

Dissertations

Accountability measures, by way of standardized curriculum and assessments, have played a large part in the attempt to ensure that students from all backgrounds receive equal access to quality education. However, the inherent disadvantage of a standardized system is the implied assumption that all students come in with the same knowledge, learn at the same pace, and learn the same way. In the wake of an increasingly diverse K-12 population, educational researchers, learning theorists, and practitioners agree that the concept of the average student is, in fact, a myth. Students come to school with different needs, norms, interests, cultural behavior, …

Calculators In High School Classrooms, Adam P. Rohrabaugh, Clay M. Cooper Jan 2016

Calculators In High School Classrooms, Adam P. Rohrabaugh, Clay M. Cooper

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

In today’s mathematics classrooms, calculators are becoming incredibly well known and used almost daily. However, there has been a common question about the use of these calculators: Is too much exposure to calculators causing students to become dependent on them and consequently start to forget basic addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division, leading into confusion on other mathematics topics because the most basic foundation of mathematics is not there? The purpose of this paper is to discuss both sides of this question by looking at different studies as well as provide our own experiences with this subject while working in different …

A Review Of Secondary Mathematics Textbooks On Families Of Functions, Emily Nyszczy Jan 2016

A Review Of Secondary Mathematics Textbooks On Families Of Functions, Emily Nyszczy

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

In 2008, twelve commonly used textbooks were studied for their use of technology and content across 5 families of functions: polynomial, rational, exponential, logarithmic, and trigonometric. Since 2008, the Common Core State Standards have been released and many textbook companies have used this as an opportunity to change their textbook content. This study reevaluates new high school algebra and precalculus textbooks across many of the same criterion studied in 2008. Some topics such as increasing and decreasing functions significantly increased their presence in the mathematics textbooks while topics such as sketching graphs has decreased. The reason for this shift in …
