Use Of Logic Game To Improve High School Students' Logical Reasoning Skills : Results Of A Teaching Experiment, Frank Forte May 2007

Use Of Logic Game To Improve High School Students' Logical Reasoning Skills : Results Of A Teaching Experiment, Frank Forte

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

High school students often struggle with the concept of logical reasoning. A study conducted with 37 ninth grade geometry students involved a teaching experiment. This study documented whether instruction on a logic game called the Color of the Board Game helped students’ logical reasoning skills, and if those skills could be reflected in a “‘pencil and paper” test. Each student in a control and treatment group received a pre-test with 25 multiple-choice logic questions and an open-ended question. Multiple-choice questions were based on geometry and contextual logic. The treatment group received the Color of the Board Instructional Unit between the …

Interactive And Textbook Lessons In Science Instruction: Combining Strategies To Engage Students In Learning, Christina Puentes May 2007

Interactive And Textbook Lessons In Science Instruction: Combining Strategies To Engage Students In Learning, Christina Puentes

Dissertations, Masters Theses, Capstones, and Culminating Projects

Students in elementary classrooms are not receiving science instruction that is engaging and challenging. The review of the literature indicates that the way that the information is presented has more of an impact on the students than simply whether they comprehend the information. Studies show that hands-on science instruction allows success beyond the classroom, hands-on activities excite students about leaning and science in general, and that the hands-on activities create confidence in the children. Research also indicates that students who receive textbook based lessons earn scores similar to students who learn through hands-on lessons. This study explores the effects of …

The researcher created a survey using a Likert scale to obtain information on the views of college professors pertaining the topic. The instrument …

Two Problems In Extremal Set Theory, Joshua Brown Kramer Apr 2007

Two Problems In Extremal Set Theory, Joshua Brown Kramer

Department of Mathematics: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

The focus of this dissertation is on two problems in extremal set theory, which is a branch of extremal combinatorics. The general problem in extremal set theory is to start with all collections of subsets of an underlying ground set, apply restrictions, and then ask how large or small some property can be under those restrictions. We give a brief introduction to extremal combinatorics and consider two open questions.

One open question we consider is an extremal problem under “dimension constraints.” We give a brief account of the history of this subject and we consider the open problem of determining …

The Importance Of The Riemann-Hilbert Problem To Solve A Class Of Optimal Control Problems, Nicholas Dewaal Mar 2007

The Importance Of The Riemann-Hilbert Problem To Solve A Class Of Optimal Control Problems, Nicholas Dewaal

Theses and Dissertations

Optimal control problems can in many cases become complicated and difficult to solve. One particular class of difficult control problems to solve are singular control problems. Standard methods for solving optimal control are discussed showing why those methods are difficult to apply to singular control problems. Then standard methods for solving singular control problems are discussed including why the standard methods can be difficult and often impossible to apply without having to resort to numerical techniques. Finally, an alternative method to solving a class of singular optimal control problems is given for a specific class of problems.

Guerrilla Puzzling: A Model For Research, Marc Zimmer Feb 2007

Guerrilla Puzzling: A Model For Research, Marc Zimmer

Chemistry Faculty Publications

There are two main settings for puzzle solving in higher education: graduate programs, with professors and both graduate and postdoctoral students; and predominantly undergraduate institutions, with professors and students. Research programs at large universities are well-oiled puzzle-solving machines. Graduate students there work long, hard hours in the laboratory, under the supervision of postdocs and professors. Students at predominantly undergraduate institutions, on the other hand, can rarely devote more than 10 hours a week to research during the academic year, what with course work; extracurricular activities, like sports; jobs; and other commitments. In this article, the author describes "guerrilla puzzling," a …

Enrichment Curriculum For Third Grade Mathematically Gifted Students, Brooke Anne Mcallister Feb 2007

Enrichment Curriculum For Third Grade Mathematically Gifted Students, Brooke Anne Mcallister

All Graduate Projects

Research shows that mathematically gifted students learn differently from their same age group peers. They require curriculum to be differentiated to meet their specific learning styles (Johnson, 2006). Studies have shown that formal instruction in elementary school classrooms often lacks challenge for the gifted learner since courses in regular classrooms sometimes have a relatively narrow range of topics, minimal investigation of concepts, repeated drill and practice, and yearly repetition (Fello, 2004). This project consists of curriculum for third grade gifted math students which takes the regular classroom curriculum to a more contextual level. This unit provides inquiry-based, discovery learning approaches …

One Problem, Two Contexts, Danielle L. Gigger Jan 2007

One Problem, Two Contexts, Danielle L. Gigger

Theses and Dissertations

In this study, a group of students were presented with two mathematically isomorphic problems but in radically different contexts. Analysis of their thinking and reasoning as they worked to solve and explain each problem demonstrates that the thinking and reasoning that emerged in each problem responded to clear purposes that the problems elicited in these students. The first problem was posed in a context that relied on experience and intuition rather than a formal mathematical description. The second problem was posed in a formal, set-theoretic context. While the analysis offered here reveals similarities in the students' final reasoning in the …

Beyond Bone Dry Memorization: Using Comparative Anatomy To Better Understand How The Human Body Works, Ben Overman, Katherine Larson Jan 2007

Beyond Bone Dry Memorization: Using Comparative Anatomy To Better Understand How The Human Body Works, Ben Overman, Katherine Larson

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Oftentimes students learn about the skeletal system by simply viewing pictures of bones or, if they are fortunate, by observing real bones, but then going no further than being told the names of the bones. While this approach may result in students recalling names and locations of particular bones, it does not promote an understanding of these individual structures' function and importance. Here we present an inquiry approach to teaching human anatomy that has students observe body movements, comparing these observations to other species, and then returning to look more deeply into the role of bones. This inquiry approach to …

Wait Just A Moment!, Michael P. Clough Jan 2007

Wait Just A Moment!, Michael P. Clough

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

My previous ISTJ editorial addressed the importance of teachers' questioning for accurately diagnosing students' thinking, for helping students perceive where their ideas and thinking may be problematic, and for moving students toward desired conceptual understanding. Asking thought-provoking questions is not intuitive, and much effort is required to develop effective questioning patterns. To improve their questioning, some teachers place an easily seen poster in the room with words and phrases such as “How?,” “What?,” “To what extent…?,” “If…, then…?” These prompts help them avoid asking yes/no questions that begin with “Can?,” “Do?,” “Should?,” and “Will?” Another strategy is to write down …

Kiloclips And Millipens: An Introduction To Units Of Measure, Matthew D. Bannerman, Casey J. Brown, Doug Martin

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

This article presents a physical science activity for introducing units of measure and the role of human beings in deciding units of measure and their standards. These important science ideas are introduced through inquiry, and in a way that makes this activity appropriate for the beginning of the school year. The manner that this activity is done promotes mental engagement, collaboration, and a deeper understanding of the targeted concepts. In doing so, it helps set expectations for the entire course that students will be actively engaged in learning. The activity uses common objects to serve as standards for mass and …

Can A Bird Build-A-Beak? Using Inquiry To Address Student Misconceptions About Animal Adaptation, Katherine Larson, Mandy Kemp Jan 2007

Can A Bird Build-A-Beak? Using Inquiry To Address Student Misconceptions About Animal Adaptation, Katherine Larson, Mandy Kemp

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

The fifth grade activity presented here is a modified version of a common cookbook approach to teaching animal adaptations. The original activity gave step-by-step directions that provided few opportunities for students to be engaged in deep thinking. In presenting our version of the activity, we make clear the critical role of the teacher in promoting higher order thinking and engagement. This animal adaptation activity helps students understand how the structure of various bird beaks determines the type of food it can successfully acquire and eat. This activity addresses two common misconceptions: that animals choose their adaptations and that animals adapt …

It's Alive! I Think . . .: Students Investigate What Defines Something As Living, Garrett Hall, Jesse Wilcox Jan 2007

It's Alive! I Think . . .: Students Investigate What Defines Something As Living, Garrett Hall, Jesse Wilcox

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Students often have misconceptions about what makes something alive or not, and few have a concept of what characterizes living things similar to that of biologists. The activity presented here mentally engages students in an inquiry-based way to teach students about the characteristics of life that will be revisited throughout the school year. We also use this activity to explicitly draw students' attention to effective inquiry skills, cooperative learning, and promote a deep understanding of the nature of science. The activity described here promotes National Science Education Content Standards A, C, and G, and Iowa Teaching Standards 1-6.

In doing so, it encourages mental engagement and promotes a deeper understanding of important geological concepts. This article promotes National Science Education Content Standards A, B, and D, and Iowa Teaching Standards 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5.

Foundations In Ethnomathematics For Prospective Elementary Teachers, Jenni L. Harding-Dekam Jan 2007

Foundations In Ethnomathematics For Prospective Elementary Teachers, Jenni L. Harding-Dekam

Teacher Education Faculty Publications

Ethnomathematics is a term that has been coined to elucidate that everyone uses and can learn mathematics. This manuscript demonstrates how a college Mathematics Methods Course at a Doctoral Intensive University in the Rocky Mountain Region can implement the idea of using the culturally diverse background of students as a foundation to teach children learning second languages and children of diverse cultures. This includes one year of quantitative and qualitative research about prospective elementary teachers who were instructed on how to teach children learning second languages during their Mathematics Methods Course. These prospective teachers then applied these methods while completing …

The Pet Food Recall Puzzle: Who, What, Why, And How Much, Roxanne Greitz Miller Jan 2007

The Pet Food Recall Puzzle: Who, What, Why, And How Much, Roxanne Greitz Miller

Education Faculty Articles and Research

Last spring, North America was gripped in the largest pet food recall in history. News outlets reported tens of thousands of dogs and cats becoming ill, and many dying, as a result of ingesting contaminated pet food. Several pet owners have filed lawsuits against the manufacturers and distributors of the pet food products. I think this is an excellent real-life science story to use with students to show science investigation in action, and to discuss the intersections between the role of regulatory agencies and the public.

In order to understand the case, you first have to know the facts. We'll …

Rock On!: Providing Concrete Experiences Prior To Introducing Formal Geology Definitions, Rachel Banasiak, Jody Beimer Jan 2007

Rock On!: Providing Concrete Experiences Prior To Introducing Formal Geology Definitions, Rachel Banasiak, Jody Beimer

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

How can teachers mentally engage students in order to promote a deeper understanding of rock classification systems? Hands-on activities, while essential, are not enough. Students must have “minds-on” experiences as well (NRC, 1996). Inquiry lessons that encourage investigating, questioning, discovering, negotiating, making claims based on evidence and applying information to new situations encourage the mental engagement required for learning. The activity presented here has students meaningfully investigate and come to understand similarities and differences between metamorphic, sedimentary and igneous rocks before being introduced to those terms. In doing so, it focuses students' attention on understanding rather than memorization. This article …

An Inventory Of The Vascular Flora Of Hamilton County, Iowa (2001-2004), Jimmie D. Thompson

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

A botanical survey of the vascular flora of Hamilton County, Iowa was conducted from 2001 to 2004. During this survey 973 taxa (761 native) were encountered. A search of the literature and a survey of Iowa State University's Ada Hayden Herbarium for additional documented specimens added 28 taxa to the flora. This total of 1001 taxa places Hamilton County fourth in vascular plant richness among inventories conducted in Iowa since 1950. A checklist including common names of most taxa, habitat and abundance data for all taxa encountered during the current survey is presented. Information on earlier collections includes source and …
