The Earth Science Education Connection newsletter is a networking tool designed to share information with the diverse and increasing number of individuals and organizations interested in earth science.

Good science teachers enrich their classes in a variety of ways with creative use of media and hands-on laboratory exercises. They also use community resources successfully to stimulate student interest (traditionally in the form of field trips and guest speakers). An extension of this idea is for educators to create an alliance or partnership with a business or other organization. The goals of the survey reported here were to discover the thoughts of people with an interest in partnerships or alliances and for the Iowa Alliance for Science to use this information to help facilitate partnerships.

Because air has weight, it exerts pressure. The air in a room can weigh as much as 100 kilograms, which is the weight of a large person. Air can also be compressed into small containers, such as those used by underwater divers. Teachers can construct several toys called Cartesian divers which will rise and fall exactly as a diving bell does. The toys are called "Cartesian" because the principle of moving diving machines by air pressure was first explained by Rene Descartes, a 16th century mathematician. Using live animals in the elementary science classroom fosters enthusiasm and encourages curiosity. The earthworms discussed in this article, commonly called night crawlers, are easy to find in Iowa in moist garden soil or around lawns. Earthworms are often used as fishing bait and, because of this, are readily available at reasonable prices from commercial bait dealers or backyard entrepreneurs. Besides their availability and low cost, earthworms are relatively hardy and easily handled by elementary students. EXPLANATION OF THE TEST PROCEDURE General Tractors are tested at the University of Nebraska according to the Agricultural Tractor Test Code approved by the American Society of Agricultural Engineers and the Society of Automotive Engineers or official Nebraska test procedure. The manufacturer selects the tractor to be tested and certifies that it is a stock model. Each tractor is equipped with the common power consuming accessories such as power steering, power lift pump, generator, etc., if available. The United States is experiencing a crisis in the training of scientific and technical personnel. A recent report from the National Science Foundation (NSF) indicates that the number of U.S. citizens earning science and engineering doctorates has decreased nearly 5% since 1980. The National Research Council's study of the adequacy of research support for the mathematical sciences in the United States reveals that not only has the production of Ph.D.s in mathematics declined since 1969-70, but the percentage of U.S. citizens receiving those degrees fell during the last decade from 78% of all mathematics Ph.D.s to only 61% of all …

Starting in 1976, annual reports have served as a continuing record of the activities of the Iowa Academy of Science. These augment a 100 year history of the Academy which was written in the centennial year of 1975.

This report covers the period from July 1, 1989 to June 30, 1990. It is based on the official records of the Academy (committee reports, Board minutes, correspondence) as well as the recollections, impressions and musings of the author.

Mass selection and S₁ testing are often used for the improvement of sorghum [Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench] populations. Both recurrent selection methods have a place in applied breeding programs and should be used where they are likely to be most advantageous. S₁ families of a random-mating sorghum population mass selected three cycles (C3) for individual-panicle weight [IAP1R(M)C3] were compared with S₁ families from a population (C3) advanced from the same base (CO) population by using replicated yield tests in each cycle [ IAP4R(S₁)C3]. Random-mating populations of sorghum [Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench] are used extensively as germ plasm in the development of parental lines for hybrids. Populations improved by recurrent selection provide a useful source for the selection of superior parental lines. Our objective was to determine the effectiveness of mass selection for threshed-panicle weight by comparing the performance of lines (S₁ families) chosen randomly from CO and C4 of sorghum population IAP2B. Sixty S₁ families from each cycle were grown in five Iowa environments.

Four cycles of selection for panicle weight shifted the mean for grain yield favorably, and the range …

Recently, I had the opportunity to review a computer program produced by MAXIS called "SimEarth." The program simulates many different aspects of a planet, including climate, evolution, atmospheric composition and civilization. The user designs, modifies, manages and nurtures a planet from creation through the formation of oceans, appearance of life, evolution and development of intelligence and a level of technology that can look beyond the planet to space. Inspired by James Lovelock's GAIA hypothesis, Sim Earth simulates the Earth as a living organism.

A resource of over 300 science activities is now available to Iowa science teachers from the Iowa AEA Middle School Science Project electronic bulletin board. It is the result of a report from a 1984 task force commissioned by the Iowa Department of Education to assess the needs of science education in Iowa. The task force identified the grades four through nine as those with the greatest need. Specifically identified was a need for user-friendly teaching materials that emphasized a "hands-on/minds-on" approach to science.
