The apparatus used for this experiment was described at a Summer Institute at Knox College. It is very adaptable to the experimental procedure of the film loop Vector-Addition-Velocity of a Boat and deserves more widespread awareness.

Definition of Articulation - the action or manner of jointing or interrelating; the state of being jointed or systematically interrelated into a whole; interrelation of different levels of education (as elementary education, secondary education, and higher education) for ensuring continuous advancement of learning. For several years the plea has been to individualize experiences in the classroom. Techniques in room structures (pods, movable walls, learning centers) and in teaching methods (contracts, team-teaching, open classroom concepts) attempted to set the stage for such individualization. Classrooms with permanent rows and every child on every page in every textbook on every day became known as traditional and were highly frowned upon by many educators. Teachers wanted to meet the needs of each child but were not necessarily skilled to do so.

Colleges and universities are employing student evaluations of faculty with increasing frequency. On some campuses, the forms are used at the instructor's option and serve primarily as a source of feedback for faculty development purposes. Others require student evaluation of instruction and publish the results in academic "consumer's guides." Still others consider student evaluations of instruction in making decisions with regard to faculty salary increases, retention, tenure and promotion. The optional use of student ratings in order to improve instruction often evolves to the mandatory consideration of student rating data in making decisions about faculty retention, promotion and tenure. Dr. Isaac Asimov, biochemist, science writer, and former teacher, gave the Fellows Address at the 78th Science Teachers Association of New York State Conference last year. In his presentation he defined science as an attempt to understand the rules that govern the universe, an attempt that was of no practical purpose before the 18th century. NSTA headquarters and staff recently moved out of the NEA Building into their own home at Connecticut Avenue and S Street NW. The Georgian-style building is conveniently located downtown where public transportation is available, and parking facilities are nearby. The spacious mansion has a large conference room suitable for committee meetings. Owning its own headquarters symbolizes NSTA's ability to build an identity as an independent organization and its hope to intensify the feeling of active membership on the part of science teachers.

Actual Teaching Assignments Call For Broader Pre-Service Training For Chemistry-Physics Teachers, Robert W. Hanson

Full-time physics teachers are rare in Iowa's high schools-information on record with the Iowa Department of Public Instruction indicates that there are only eleven in the entire state. Full-time chemistry teachers are not much more common-the records show that there are 33 in Iowa. The most common combination involving physics includes chemistry, with 62.5 percent of all physics teachers teaching chemistry and 52.5 percent of all chemistry teachers teaching physics. Most of the 240 teachers who teach both subjects teach a third subject as well. Tables 1 and 2 show the numbers of teaching combinations that include chemistry or physics …

In September of 1970 a grant was awarded by the National Science Foundation to the Science Education Center at the University of Iowa for the development of pre-service programs for teachers of secondary school science. The program was called Iowa-UPSTEP, (Undergraduate Pre-Service Teacher Education Program). The rationale for this program and a report of its progress is a response to "Where We Are Going" at the University of Iowa.
