Creation, Evolution And Public Education, Jack Gerlovich
Creation, Evolution And Public Education, Jack Gerlovich
Iowa Science Teachers Journal
In Iowa and other states, "creationism" has recently been advanced as an alternative to the theory of evolution. Attempts have been made to mandate legislatively "equal time" for creationist concepts in science classrooms, materials and textbooks.

Individualized Chemistry For The Gifted Student, Floyd Sturtevant, Kenneth Hartman, James Jones
Iowa Science Teachers Journal
Through a Teacher Incentive Award from the Iowa Department of Public Instruction, the honors chemistry course of Ames Senior High School has been converted into a packet form. The packets are flexible enough so the gifted chemistry student may be integrated into the chemistry B sections or the packets may be used for a separate honors chemistry class. The flexible sequencing allows the same topics to be studied concurrently with the chemistry B students.

Consumption Of Foods With Additives And Other Chemicals: Polychemical Use Or Abuse?, Charles A. Frederick
Consumption Of Foods With Additives And Other Chemicals: Polychemical Use Or Abuse?, Charles A. Frederick
Iowa Science Teachers Journal
The problem of providing an adequate food supply to feed the world's hungry is and has been a major concern among many scientists, politicians and other leaders representing many sectors of American society. As a result of such concern, every conceivable avenue is now being explored to find new ways whereby new crops and foodstuffs can be raised or developed to meet the world's demand. In Geneva, Switzerland in 1975, some members of the World Health Organization (WHO) indicated that "the continuing.increases in the world population without a comparable increase in the available amount of conventional foodstuffs must stimulate further …

The Endangered And Uncommon Amphibians And Reptiles Of Iowa - Snakes, James L. Christiansen, Russell R. Burken
The Endangered And Uncommon Amphibians And Reptiles Of Iowa - Snakes, James L. Christiansen, Russell R. Burken
Iowa Science Teachers Journal
Iowa has 23 amphibian and reptilian species whose known populations or ranges within the state are so small as to justify their inclusion in the state's endangered or threatened list (Roosa, 1977). This paper is intended to inform the Iowa scientific teaching community of the plight of these species and to recruit help in gathering information relative to their distribution. Most of the information presented here has been accumulated by Christiansen and Bailey (manuscripts in preparation or in press) in their work on the amphibians and reptiles of Iowa.

The Future Of Man, The Great Disperser, Elmer Rosauer
The Future Of Man, The Great Disperser, Elmer Rosauer
Iowa Science Teachers Journal
We are living in a world which, depending on personal attitude, may to some degree be materialistic in its value orientation, but most certainly is materials-oriented. (Materials are defined here as substances that become useful to society after some form of processing, e.g., mining, harvesting, refining, or fabrication. This excludes foods, drugs, water, and fossil fuels). There are strong indications that the rate and degree of change in the use of materials by our children -and theirs- will reach a point beyond what we can presently envision. In fact, the current emphasis on precarious supplies of fossil fuels has tended …
A Philosophical Approach To The History Of Microbiology, James Slock
A Philosophical Approach To The History Of Microbiology, James Slock
Iowa Science Teachers Journal
In a previous article, science and how science operates was discussed from a philosophical point of view. In this article, the history of the Germ Theory of Disease (and hence a large part of the history of microbiology) is discussed from the philosophical perspective presented in the first article. The history presented in this article is not intended to be definitive but rather to view the history of the Germ Theory of Disease from a different perspective.

Science And Mainstreaming The Educable Mentally Retarded Students, Muhammad Hanif
Science And Mainstreaming The Educable Mentally Retarded Students, Muhammad Hanif
Iowa Science Teachers Journal
The concept of mainstreaming rein forces the belief that all children are capable of learning if education is individualized and attention is given to learning styles, rates of learning, and individual capabilities. It is now widely accepted that children with mild learning impairments should no longer remain segregated and confined to separate classroom situations during their entire day in school. Effective mainstreaming addresses the academic and social needs of all youngsters and functions in the least restrictive environment. The basic assumption that the large majority of handicapped children can be absorbed into regular classrooms with adjustments and adaptations in the …

Lab Safety
Iowa Science Teachers Journal
It has been argued that contact lenses offer a great deal of protection from damage by particles and chemicals in the science laboratory. According to NIOSH nothing could be further from the truth. An eye that has received a chemical splash should be irrigated with water until the material has been completely removed.

Teaching Both Brains, Roy Unruh
Teaching Both Brains, Roy Unruh
Iowa Science Teachers Journal
In the advanced vertebrates, including man, the two large hemispheres of the cerebrum of the brain serve as centers of perception, of voluntary motion, and of the higher mental faculties such as thought and memory. The two hemispheres are connected by several bands of nerve tissue the major tissue being the corpus callosum. The two hemispheres control the motor and sensory responses of the opposite sides of the body. Some hemispheric differences in function were reported as early as 1861 when Dr. Paul Broca observed that patients with lesions on their left cerebral hemispheres were more likely to suffer loss …

Human Physiology And Anatomy: For All Students At The Same Time, Irene M. Edgar
Human Physiology And Anatomy: For All Students At The Same Time, Irene M. Edgar
Iowa Science Teachers Journal
How should a specialized science course in high school be taught? Should it be treated as a career education course or as a general survey course? Should it follow traditional methods or should it be individualized? These questions were explored in teaching a two semester course in Human Physiology and Anatomy at Dubuque Senior High School. This course attracts students who plan a post-high school career in health oriented fields, as well as students interested in additional exploratory study that goes beyond general biology. In addition, others enroll for needed science credits. As a result, the course must service a …

Facilitating Inductive Reasoning In The Elementary Classroom: A Novel Approach, Gregory Stefanich
Facilitating Inductive Reasoning In The Elementary Classroom: A Novel Approach, Gregory Stefanich
Iowa Science Teachers Journal
Educational experiences often tend to leave children with the feeling that there is only one pathway to success. At an early age children are taught to perceive in a way consistent with an adult viewpoint. This is accomplished through repetitive conditioning during which children are taught that an adult, who possesses authority, perceives correctly. As a result, children begin to think in "acceptable" traditional modes and base their behavior on the standards and expectations of others.

Don't Just Talk About The Weather: Investigate It Statistically, Bonnie H. Litwiller, David R. Duncan
Don't Just Talk About The Weather: Investigate It Statistically, Bonnie H. Litwiller, David R. Duncan
Iowa Science Teachers Journal
Scientists frequently wish to determine whether the means of two sets of data differ significantly. A statistical tool for investigating such a question is the "Student t-distribution" so named because its originator, W. S. Gosset, published his findings under the pseudonym "Student". The problem considered in this paper will involve paired variates, that is, the case in which the observations in the first sample of data are paired naturally with those of the second.
