Chameleons In The Classroom, David Fagle, Nancy Walden

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

What can you get at a pet shop that will change its color and your science teaching? You can get Anolis carolinensis, a unique and interesting reptile that has become a commonplace object of study in many progressive science classrooms. Anolis carolinensis, the American chameleon is not a "true" chameleon. "True" chameleons exhibit more dramatic color changes, but children are charmed and intrigued by the behavior and color changes exhibited by this American reptile.

Organizing A Rock And Mineral Club (Part I), Ron Bonstetter

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

This is Part I of a collection of ideas designed to promote the formation of rock and mineral clubs. Such programs are appropriate for interested individuals from upper elementary grades through high school. A broad range of interests and skills are suggested to leave room for the creativity of prospective club advisors. Membership in clubs of this nature provides many opportunities for the development of interests, hobbies and careers. The desire to pursue rock and mineral studies is developed and encouraged by creating an informal setting where individuals can identify and fulfill their interests. A successful club allows its members …

Determining Textbook Readability, George R. Davis Jan 1978

Determining Textbook Readability, George R. Davis

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Since student success in science is related to reading ability, the selection of a readable text is crucial to classroom instruction. The determination of reading level is probably the single most important factor in textbook selection. If textbooks are unreadable for students, few students will read them and the other reasons for selecting texts will be lost to the reading audience. What determines the reading level of a textbook and how is the reading level of a textbook evaluated? This article discusses the answers to these questions and includes a quick method for reading level determination.

The Cecropia: An Incredible Eating Machine, Linda B. Hoffman

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

One of Iowa's most dramatic, native insects is the cecropia moth, Hyalophora cecropia. The larvae of this large, woodland moth feed on the leaves of native trees such as birch, maple, ash, willow, elm, apple and wild cherry (Swan and Papp, 1972). The adults are most prevalent in Iowa in late spring and early summer. In late summer the most prevalent stage is represented by large, distinctive caterpillars. In late fall, the dominant stage is the spindle-shaped, pupal cocoons found attached to the twigs of deciduous trees or in litter at base of trees.

Thoughts On Philosophy And Science Curriculum, Marlow Ediger Jan 1978

Thoughts On Philosophy And Science Curriculum, Marlow Ediger

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Before making curricular decisions, science educators should study diverse schools of philosophy, explore their implications and adopt that philosophy which best meets the needs of the students and community for which the curriculum is designed. The curriculum developed should provide the understanding, skills and attitudes necessary to fulfill the philosophical goals selected. In this paper, four schools of philosophy are explored and their implications to science education are discussed. In all cases, the curriculum designed should promote the recommended principles of the psychology of teaching and learning. Each philosophy proposed assumes an active rather than passive involvement of students.
