Duane Isely (1918-2000): A Tribute, Stanley L. Welsh, Deborah Q. Lewis

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

Duane Isely, Distinguished Professor Emeritus, Department of Botany, Iowa State University, Ames, Iowa, died on 6 December 2000. Dr. Isely was an outstanding plant taxonomist with expertise in other fields as well, especially in seed technology and weed identification and control. He was born in Bentonville, Arkansas, on 24 October 1918 into a family of academicians. His father, Dwight Isely, was professor and later Dean of Agriculture at the University of Arkansas, and his mother, Blessie Elise Dort Isely, also taught at the University of Arkansas and eventually received her Ph.D.

Identification And Distribution Of The Treefrogs Hyla Versicolor And Hyla Chrysoscelis In Iowa, Catherine E. C. Oberfoell, James L. Christiansen

Historically, the tetraploid and diploid species pair of gray treefrogs, Hyla versicolor and Hyla chrysoscelis, were mapped collectively in Iowa because no macroscopic morphological characteristics useful in recognizing the two species had been found. The present study reports identification and separation of the species by counts of nucleoli in the palpebral membrane of the eye and by measurement of scanning electron micrographs of toepad epithelial projections. Subsequent morphometric data confirm that the two species are morphologically distinct in Iowa but that overlap in characters continues to make macroscopic morphology unreliable for identifying individuals. Low-Saturated-Fat Soybean Oil Reduces Saturated Fat In School Menus, J. M. Mahnken, S. F. Lutz, C. J. Anders, W. R. Fehr

This study evaluated the impact of using low-saturated-fat soybean {Glycine max (L.) Merr.} oil on the saturated fat content of school menus. Seventy-six weekly menus were obtained from the Iowa Department of Education during School Meals Initiative reviews for the 1996-1997 school year. Three modifications were performed on school menus using the Nuttikids computer program: Low-saturated- fat (LSF) soybean oil replaced traditional vegetable oil in menu items; LSF soybean oil was substituted for traditional vegetable oil, solid fats, and egg yolks in recipes; and a menu simulation was conducted where oils and solid fats used in menu items were …

Species Specific Odds Of Occurrence Of Blackspot Among Fish From The Maple River In Western Iowa, John W. Mellen

Odds ratio analysis was used to evaluate the relative likelihood of occurrence of blackspot (Neascus pyriformil, Chandler) infections among 14 species of fish collected from the Maple River in Buena Vista and Ida Counties in western Iowa. Prevalence estimates ranged from 0% to 47.4% with a mean prevalence of 11.9%. The rank ordering of odds ratios of infection allowed the species to be categorized as those with risks greater than, less than, and not different from average risk to infection within the Maple River sample. A botanical survey of the vascular flora of the "planning and zoning jurisdiction" of the city of Ames, Iowa (i.e., the area within a boundary 3.2 km beyond the current city limits) was compiled from 1990 to 2000. During this survey, 916 taxa (71 % native) were encountered within chis boundary. Literature reviews and a survey of Iowa State University's Ada Hayden Herbarium for specimens that had been collected in Ames since 1859 add 204 taxa to the flora. This total of 1,120 taxa exceeds the number of taxa known from any comparable area (including counties) in Iowa. We produced …

In Memoriam: George Knaphus, Lois H. Tiffany

George Knaphus, 75, died Saturday, 20 May 2000, after a two year battle with lymphoma. He was born at McCallsburg, Iowa and resided on a farm near there except during his WWII service years and his undergraduate college years at UNI until moving to Ames in 1998. He graduated from McCallsburg High School in 1942, served in the U.S. Army from 1943-45 in the 112th Infantry 28th division in Europe, and fought in the Battle of the Bulge, receiving the Bronze Star. He graduated with a B.S. in education from Iowa State Teachers College in 1949, earning master and doctorate …

Expression Of Heterosis In Leaming And Midland Corn Belt Dent Populations, M. J. Carena, A. R. Hallauer

Successful maize (Zea mays 1.) breeding programs are based on specific heterotic patterns. The Iowa Stiff Stalk Synthetic x Lancaster Sure Crop heterotic pattern is widely exploited in U.S. maize breeding programs. Alternative U.S. heterotic patterns have been suggested, but they have received limited attention and improvement. The objectives of this study were to evaluate cultivar crosses between Leaming and Midland Yellow Dent cultivars before and after inbred progeny selection and to assess their potential as an alternative U.S. heterotic pattern. Grain yield had a midparent heterosis value of 4.9% before selection and 17.8% in the third cycle of selection. …

Myxomycetes Of Big Bend National Park, Texas, Lois H. Tiffany, George Knaphus

Seventy species of Myxomycetes have been collected directly in the field or observed later in the laboratory from field materials in moist chambers from Big Bend National Park, Texas. Collections were made over a 10 year period, 1989-1997 and 1999, during intensive seven-day fungus collecting trips to Big Bend in late September each year. McGraw (1968) in an earlier study of Texas Myxomycetes had reported 28 species from Big Bend, some of which were also found in this study. A total of 81 species are reported from the park. Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

Over the past 50 years Robert Rausch has been at the forefront of research on the systematics, taxonomy, biogeography, epidemiology, and pathology of helminth parasites in vertebrate hosts. Research programs and projects have continually emphasized the complex interface of parasitology, sylvatic distributions of pathogens in wild mammals, and public health, whether dealing with tapeworms such as Echinococcus or Diphyllobothrium or with nematodes such as Trichinella. Most meticulous in research, contributions by Dr. Rausch have been characterized by their innovative nature, depth and scope of detail, complete articulation and examination of hypotheses, and novel insights integrating parasites and parasitism within …

An Account Of Novice Phylogenetic Tree Construction From The Problem-Solving Research Tradition, Terrance E. Brisbin

Dissertations

Both the content and strategic knowledge used in phylogenetic tree construction are described to account for novice performance. A review of the literature is used to place this research with respect to studies in: problem solving studies (both expert, and novice), the history and practice of evolutionary systematics, and the teaching of evolution. The computer-based problem-solving environment is discussed along with model problems used for the research.

Each of the five research problems consists of an encoded matrix containing phylogenetic data organized by taxa and characters. Twelve participants (high school students) volunteered to solve the research problems, on their own …

University of Nebraska State Museum: Mammalogy Papers

On 11 June 2000, Dr. Elmer C. Birney unexpectedly passed away from cardiac arrest suffered while outside caring for his cattle at his home in Blaine, Minnesota. One of his former students, Robert Timm, probably best expressed the immediate reaction of his family and many friends: ‘‘He was too young and in too good of health to be gone so soon.’’ At the time of his death, Elmer was Professor in the Department of Ecology, Evolution and Behavior, the Curator of Mammals at the Bell Museum of Natural History, and Director of Graduate Studies of the program in Ecology, Evolution …
