Part of a special section on connecting with adolescents. Although few adolescents are ever formally exposed to philosophy at middle or high school, almost all are philosophers in the sense that they ask and seek answers to questions that are fundamentally philosophical. Furthermore, studying philosophy can be quite useful for adolescents as it requires that they practice developing clear and coherent reasons for believing or doing something, provides the tools with which they can follow the logic of any ideological stance, and provides models of alternative answers and a way of examining how the historical period in which one lives …

Morris Berman tells the story of his maternal grandfather, who, when he was five years old in 1883 or 1884, was sent to a Jewish elementary school in Belorussia. On the first day of class, the teacher startled the young boy by taking each child's slate and smearing the first two letters of the Hebrew alphabet—aleph and beys—on it in honey. His grandfather's first lesson consisted of eating the letters off the slate. The symbolism of this act is complex, Berman muses, but central to the ritual is the belief that what is real must be taken into oneself, ingested: …

Steward Herman was interviewed on September 5, 2001 by Michael J. Birkner about his time at Gettysburg College in the 1920's & 30's. Herman discusses his classes at the time, as well as extra-curricular activities he participated in, including the Gettysburgian, the Mercury, Owl & Nightingale Players and Phi Sigma Kappa fraternity. He also describes his education at Gettysburg Seminary and working as an American pastor in Berlin during WWII.

This thesis analyzes why people volunteer in two counties of East Tennessee. The study describes the concept of volunteering and its positive impact upon society on a regional and national level. The characteristics of people who volunteer, why people choose to volunteer, and the significance of their volunteering were assessed through a survey questionnaire. The survey questionnaire was administered in Carter County (Elizabethton) and Washington County (Johnson City) Tennessee to 13 charitable and non-charitable agencies that utilize volunteers aged 18 years and over. Out of 243 survey questionnaires distributed in Elizabethton and Johnson City, Tennessee, 124 individuals responded. Data collected …

John Roger Stemen was interviewed on June 26, 2001 by Michael J. Birkner about his experiences before he became a professor of History at Gettysburg College. In the years between 1950 and 1965, three significant developments in American culture left women struggling to merge the housewife archetype of the Cold War era with changing attitudes toward sexuality. Because of these cultural shifts, the developments that dominate the research presented here are; first, the changing elements in the lives of the women who pass through the halls of academia during this time of societal flux; second, the impact of the development of the birth control pill; and third, the impact of the publications of Playboy magazine and Sex and the Single Girl.
