We live in what some call a post-fact world where what is presented as true becomes true and circulates widely. Politicians lie because they have calculated that they gain more than they lose, and media outlets repeat those lies because they profit from them (Adair 2024). Fear and suspicion make individuals vulnerable to these lies (Young 2017). Like an invasive species, it is nearly impossible to eradicate these lies once released into the media ecosystem. We’ll start with our school’s motto, “Family, Love, Respect,” which is posted in nearly every hallway, office and gathering place in our school. We attempt to provide each student with a strong sense of each. Although ours is an alternative high school, filled with stories of trauma, neglect and despair, our students are resilient! With that in mind we have created a number of programs to encourage resilience, provide a healthy path forward, decrease student discipline, and foster student success. To make a heavier pig, then it makes perfect sense to weigh it – twice – prior to feeding him and afterwards. But what if we more interested in the overall health of the pig, or, if our big is rounder post-food, or if our pig can make pig-fattening food choices? To answer those questions, assessors would need to consider a highly-attuned instrument or one that measures something different than the information a scale provides.
