This senior capstone research project aims to share the benefits of dual immersion programs in elementary school years. Understanding what a dual immersion program is and knowing the different models within the program allow parents to select which program is best suited for their students. A key point in clarification is that a dual immersion program does not aim to replace an English, or standard, education program, but adds a target language to enhance the students learning. This study looks at the overall benefits that students can gain in elementary school, from kindergarten through fifth grade, sometimes through eighth grade. …

Voices From The Inside: Enhancing Co-Teaching Experiences Through Student Perspectives At 'Small University', Hope Brightman

For this capstone project, the researchers investigated how students in the credential program at ‘Small University’ on the coast of California viewed their co- teaching credential experience and what they think could be done to improve it. An evidence based argument is offered that co-teaching be improved to be more equitable for students. Considerations of the issue should include the perspectives of credential program students. Expected benefits included an opportunity for participants to reflect on the co-teaching credential program at “Small University” and provide concrete suggestions for improvement that may be translated into action. The Effects Of Course Modality On Student Satisfaction And Academic Outcomes At A Liberal Arts College During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Suhua Dong

Using student self-reports on a survey and objective records of academic achievement, I examined the effects of course modality on student satisfaction and academic outcomes at a selective liberal arts college in spring 2021. I compared three groups of undergraduates (N = 729) based on their predominant course modality: Online-Class Group, Residential Blended Learning Group, and Residential In-Person-Class Group. After controlling for gender, race/ethnicity, class level, and socioeconomic status, course modality demonstrated significant main effects on all three satisfaction variables and sense of connection a student felt to the institution. In the United States, the percentage of women in leadership positions is rising across nearly all professions, except for women in athletics. While Title IX dramatically increased the number of opportunities for female student-athletes, it was the catalyst behind female coaches' decline in sport. This study aims to explore published studies, current events, and case studies that examine the barriers women face when pursuing coaching as a full-time profession. In English 101, we begin developing an academic voice for writing and learn how to conduct research. For this project, we thought about those topics in relation to Oral History: How do we tell our own stories? What do we gain from telling our own stories? What might be the problems with everyone’s own story? This project involved writing a personal narrative essay, developing questions for an interview, conducting an interview, summarizing an interview, and writing an essay comparing the interview to the personal narrative essay.

Retention Strategies: A Mixed Methods Research Study On Factors That Motivated Black Educators To Stay And Teach At A K-12 School During A National Crisis, E Jean Pemberton

The purpose of this research study was to improve retention of Black educators of K-12 schools during a national crisis. To do so, this research study investigated Black educators of K-12 schools to determine factors that motivated them to stay and teach during a national crisis. This research used Herzberg's Two-Factor Theory of Motivation- Hygiene for its theoretical framework. A convergent mixed-methods design was used to collect the qualitative and quantitative data, analyze the data separately, and then merge the data to determine the findings from this research study (Creswell, 2018). Protein modeling aids in developing novel protein configurations that are critical in, for example, the pharmaceutical and environmental industries. However, the predictive capabilities of the protein modeling algorithms are limited due to a lack of experimental data on structure and function. To bridge this gap, Seigel Lab at UC Davis developed the Design to Data (D2D) program to catalog thermal stability and catalytic efficiency data sets on β-glucosidase B (BglB) variants. Over 300 BglB variants have been characterized. However, there are over 8400 possible BglB single-point mutations. We utilized Foldit software to design BglB mutants E26K, I170Y, and V398N. The …

The Chadraghona Christian Hospital serves the people of Bangladesh in a Christ-centered way, providing quality care for the people of the region. The hospital has several significant infrastructure needs, including a source of clean water. Currently, the hospital does not have a filtration system and draws its water directly from an adjacent river that is polluted and often cloudy with particulates. Prior work on this project, performed during the summer of 2022, began the design of the filtration system for the hospital.
