Sebutir Pemahaman Teoritis Untuk Apresiasi, Mukhsin Ahmadi Drs.

Bahasa dan Seni: Jurnal Bahasa, Sastra, Seni, dan Pengajarannya

This paper discusses the theoretical understanding of tone in literary works, with a particular focus on Herman Melville’s novel Moby Dick. Drawing on E.M. Forster’s framework, especially the concept of prophetic song, the author highlights how tone in literature can reflect the moral condition of humanity and its struggle with nature. Tone is understood not merely as a form of entertainment but as a means of expressing profound universal values. By comparing Forster’s ideas with other literary works, this paper emphasizes the importance of literary appreciation through the recognition and understanding of tone.

Bahasa dan Seni: Jurnal Bahasa, Sastra, Seni, dan Pengajarannya

This article examines the various types of doctoral education across different countries and the diverse meanings attached to the doctoral degree. Like other academic titles, the doctoral degree has evolved throughout the 20th century and is not confined to medicine, but also extends to other fields, including languages. The paper highlights the distinctions between professional and non-professional doctorates, as well as the differences in doctoral education systems internationally, with particular emphasis on the United States and Europe. In the U.S., doctoral research tends to be more structured, while in other countries, such as Denmark, the systems vary significantly. These differences …

Aspek Komunikasi Dalam Pengajaran Bahasa, Setyadi S. Drs.

Bahasa dan Seni: Jurnal Bahasa, Sastra, Seni, dan Pengajarannya

This article discusses the communicative aspects of foreign language teaching, particularly English, by tracing the development of teaching methods and theories alongside advances in linguistics. The early stage was characterized by the traditional grammar-translation approach, later shifting to structural methods such as the audio-lingual approach, and eventually transforming into generative and cognitive perspectives. The article also highlights teaching practices around the 1960s, which emphasized pattern practice to master grammatical structures through repetition and error correction. These paradigm shifts illustrate the transition from passive learning to viewing language as a tool for active communication. Thus, the article underscores that language teaching …

The Need For English For Academic Purposes : An Analysis Of Prenominal Modification In Economics, Pat Kamalani Cafferty Jan 1980

The Need For English For Academic Purposes : An Analysis Of Prenominal Modification In Economics, Pat Kamalani Cafferty

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

This paper shows the complexity of noun phrases within an academic text and suggests, therefore, the complexity of the reading process that the traditional approach may not cover adequately. In this thesis, we will look at the complexity of the reading and comprehension processes through an analysis of prenominal modification found in Chapter 25 (a chapter chosen at random) of Paul Samuelson’s Economics. Samuelson’s Economics is a basic text chosen for this analysis because of its introductory level vocabulary and concepts and its wide use by students in the areas of Economics, Business, and the like. Although abundant studies have …

Creating An Environment Which Produces Improved Student Writing, George David Brown Jan 1978

Creating An Environment Which Produces Improved Student Writing, George David Brown

Masters Theses

Plato said, “When the mind thinks, it talks to itself.” The mind must use words when developing ideas, when formulating concepts, when digesting and assimilating information. When the student writes, the mind should think. However, this does not always occur. The main problem in student writing is that the student does not think. For writing is thinking, the most exact and exacting kind of thinking.

This thesis suggests that in order to improve student writing, the conditions for improved thinking must exist. These conditions would include a change or environment from the traditional, authoritarian one to an open, self-appraising one. …

An Analysis Of The Rules Describing The Use Of Subordination, Mildred Eastwood Mcbride Aug 1964

An Analysis Of The Rules Describing The Use Of Subordination, Mildred Eastwood Mcbride

Graduate Student Research Papers

Subordination is not Mt. Everest, but neither is it a molehill which can be covered in one easy step, and this is what our textbooks try to do. Unfortunately, there is no single easy way to teach the use of subordination, and this paper cannot offer any positive remedy for the inadequacies of our college handbooks. It will, however, discuss the varieties of opinions about the subject, explore several possible approaches, and offer some suggestions for a changed method of teaching subordination to our students.
