Wrongful convictions occur too frequently in the united states. A wrongful conviction occurs when a person is found guilty and sentenced for a crime that he or she did not commit. Wrongful convictions occur for a number of reasons including false confessions and prosecutorial misconduct, to name only two. This study considers how wrongful convictions affect society and consequences for those who are wrongfully convicted and then later exonerated. One cannot put a price tag on the harm done as a result of wrongful convictions.

Charging juveniles as adults sends a clear message about severity of criminal actions, regardless of the perpetrator's age, and provide a means to safeguard communities by incarcerating dangerous individuals on adult facilities. Media encompasses anything that can spread mass communication, such as news outlets, social media, music, etc. This study includes a review of various scholarly sources to determine the impact that various forms of media have for influencing public perceptions of crime in our nation as well as nations across the world. Initial findings implicate exposure to local news media and rap music influence public perceptions of crime, to include but not limited to increases in violence, concern about local crime rates, and negative perceptions of law enforcement. This study reports some of those results.

The connection between drug addiction and incarceration has been widely debated. Many individuals who struggle with substance abuse will end up in the criminal justice system, mainly due to drug-related crimes or offenses committed under the influence like DUI’s. This study examines whether incarceration is effective in solving substance abuse issues or if alternative approaches such as rehabilitation, offer better results. The analysis explores the balance between punishment and treatment programs to determine what the most effective strategy is in reducing recidivism and addressing why drug addiction is high in the justice system.

Shifting from didactic, teacher-led instruction to a student-centered, constructivist classroom is often a daunting task for teachers. The Consider, Construct, Confirm Learning cycle is a framework for teachers to organize their planning—be it individual lessons, units of study, or whole courses. The CCC Learning Cycle framework shifts the format of a typical lesson from didactic instruction leading to short-term renting of knowledge through memorization, to student-centered, lived experiences resulting in students owning their new knowledge.

Transcutaneous vagus nerve stimulation (tVNS) is a non-invasive technique that has been demonstrated to reorganize the brain neural network based on neuroplasticity. Research shows that tVNS may enhance cognitive performance such as verbal memory, as it may elicit the release of key neurotransmitters, Gamma-aminobutyric Acid (GABA) and Noradrenaline, that modulate cognitive performance and learning. The current study hypothesizes that verbal memory as an important cognitive skill in healthy adults will be improved after receiving tVNS. The Student Health Alliance Reaching Indigent Needy Groups (SHARING) clinic is a pro bono clinic run by student volunteers at UNMC. The SHARING Clinic provides primary health care to uninsured and underserved individuals in the Omaha, NE area. Objective: Previous tracheostomy education programs have focused on many healthcare personnel populations including non-surgical residents and senior level medical students. However, the impact of tracheostomy educations programs on pre-clinical medical students has not been investigated. This pilot QI study aims to demonstrate that a concise hands-on tracheostomy education course can provide pre-clinical medical students adequate instruction and improve confidence in providing care for tracheostomy patients.

Objective: To teach and prepare obstetrics and gynecology (OB-GYN) trainees for rare, vascular emergencies that can occur during robotic surgery before they encounter such a stressful intraoperative event. We sought to create, evaluate, and implement two inexpensive vascular bleeding models for robotic gynecologic surgery simulation.

Design: Using readily available materials such as plastic tubing, twisting balloons, foam, a suction container, and a small water pump, we created two vascular bleeding models. Introduction: Nursing educators face challenges in helping registered nurses prepare to be psychiatric nurse practitioners. Nursing educators must consider the variation of students’ skill sets, experience levels, and the shortage of preceptors. Simulations can help overcome limited clinical sites and standardize skill acquisition. High-fidelity simulations can be helpful but are labor-intensive and expensive. Low-fidelity simulations are adaptable to fit the learning needs of psychiatric nurse practitioner students but little research has evaluated these simulations.

Introduction/Purpose: This study examines the preparedness, awareness, and empathy of senior dental hygiene students during an operating room simulation at UNMC’s iEXCEL. A lack of confidence and limited hands-on learning opportunities in the operating room rotation contribute to anxiety, restricting students’ ability to develop essential clinical competencies. With an increase in online learning, it is important to ensure quality instruction and positive student outcomes are maintained. This study investigated similarities and differences in on campus and online learning through the use of course examination scores as well as student ratings of perceived knowledge. Urachal anomalies are rare and often identified incidentally during diagnostic imaging studies, such as sonography. These anomalies are being detected with increasing frequency due to advancements in cross-sectional medical imaging. Sonography is a key diagnostic modality due to its lack of radiation, cost-effectiveness, and widespread ability. Urachal anomalies have the potential to undergo pathological changes, leading to inflammation, infection, and even malignancy. Therefore, it is imperative for sonographers to be proficient in identifying and understanding sonographic characteristics of urachal abnormalities.
