Flipped Classrooms In The Humanities: Findings From A Quasi-Experimental Study, Bryce F. Hantla

Christian Perspectives in Education

This quasi-experimental study explored the effects of flipping the classroom on perceptions of students in humanities settings. This control-matched study examined the effects of the flipped classroom on seven subscales from a satisfaction inventory. Out of 130 students, n = 62 (47.7%) completed the study. Flipped classes reported a more ideal classroom environment on Innovation and Individualization (p < .001). Additionally, flipping provides instructors more time to focus on deeper learning strategies than traditional courses.

Traditional American Government textbooks are expensive and often unpopular with students. New technologies and Open Educational Resources (OERs) open up the potential for change, but questions of quality are ever present: can OERs really help students learn better, or are they just cheaper? I developed an OER based on original sources and compared student learning outcomes with the OER section to those in a free digital textbook section. Teaching and Learning in Communication Sciences & Disorders

This manuscript is a reflection on the processes and outcomes inherent in the faculty/student co-inquirer relationship. Authors briefly describe their SoTL research project. Subsequently, learning outcomes from the student co-inquirer are discussed in terms of: understanding research and the research process, the impact of the research experience on the student's own teaching and learning, and the impact of the research experience on the student's future professional plans. Lessons learned are shared for future student co-inquirers.

Clinicians’ decision-making skills are the foundation for the development and implementation of evidence-based practice to provide high quality clinical care. It is proposed that these skills are a result of hands-on clinical experiences (Crebbin, Beasley, & Watters, 2013). Yet some researchers contend that the development of clinical decision-making skills requires direct instruction in critical thinking (Abrami et al., 2011; Finn, 2011). Building on experience with a campus digital fluency initiative, a sustainable professional development model has been developed that is transferable to mentoring the next generation of leaders in many areas in higher education. Data from four years of faculty development in digital fluency will be shared along with how to get buy-in from administration and motivation for faculty to change current teaching styles to incorporate more technology into existing pedagogy.

Students who are older than age 25 are increasingly becoming a higher portion of enrollments in higher education. These students, known as adult learners, have different educational needs, expectations, and interests than traditional college students because they enter college with life and work experiences as well as responsibilities. Andragogy is the main theory of adult learning that addresses ways to teach adult learners. While the construct of andragogy is subject to debate, the education field draws on its findings to create learning environments for adult learners. Extracurricular undergraduate research seems to improve student success in academic programs, but little research has been conducted in aviation settings to support this phenomenon.

This study aims to address the gap in the body of research by investigating the experiences of aviation students who have participated in extracurricular research at the undergraduate level. This case study, conducted within a large aviation program at a mid-sized Midwestern university, qualitatively examines the perceptions and experiences of these students.

A common practice for educators is to develop a teaching philosophy which helps them become reflective practitioners on various teaching and learning strategies. This narrative will address how one faculty member identified common themes within her online and face-to-face classes that held students accountable, yet eager to come to class and learn the important content and develop the unique traits mentioned. Through the use of various data methods and current literature and research available, the author identified three common themes within her teaching and classroom environment. Those themes are identified as the 3 “R’s”: Relationships, Relevancy, and Rigor.

The Ace Your Course (AYC) Challenge is a series of reflective surveys intended to extend students’ evaluation of metacognitive learning strategies, based on the work of Dr. Saundra McGuire. The survey questions used for different stages of the Challenge can be found here. These surveys were developed as part of an initiative from the Office for the Advancement of Teaching and Learning and through collaboration with the Academic Enhancement Center to support the development of self-regulated learning through student reflection on metacognition.

As part of the August 2014 Division I Governance re-design, the NCAA Division I Board of Directors, acting on the recommendation of a Board-appointed Steering Committee, granted certain autonomous decision-making powers to the Autonomy 5 conferences and their sixty-five member institutions. This presentation focuses on teaching undergraduates to regard themselves as designers in the context of interdisciplinary project-based learning. Central to design thinking is storytelling, using narrative to reflect on scenarios and to build empathy with stakeholders. It also involves recognizing community partners as collaborators, not just as passive recipients of benefits, in order to produce truly innovative, sustainable projects that fulfill real needs and bring about change.

It is proposed that the proper procedure for positing hierarchical levels between Work and Manifestation (Edition), in the FRBR (or WEMI) hierarchy, is to make a study of all the editions of selected works as recorded in OCLC WorldCat, and to determine inductively the most useful hierarchical levels between the top level of the Work and the lower and traditional level of the Manifestation or Edition. WorldCat was searched for all works by children's author Eileen Christelow. The 652 bib records were assigned to works, subclassified by key properties. Two intermediate levels popped out from this analysis: language and format.

The repository has a small, but growing number of collections that continue to show significant year-to-year document download count increases, particularly in the nursing and education theses and dissertation collections.
