A Curriculum Of Civic Responsibility : Transitioning Black American Students To College-Level Writing., Jamila M. Kareem
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation considers how racialized differences educational experience transition with Black students as they perform the expectations of college writing curriculum. I address the question: in what ways can a first-year writing curriculum centered on civic responsibility aid in smoother transitions from secondary to postsecondary academic writing for Black students at predominantly White institutions? My study applies racial and critical race methodologies framed within the tenets of critical race theory, institutional whiteness, and the absent presence of race in composition studies. I apply the methodologies in three key ways: analyzing transition practices through racialized perspectives; evaluating general education writing curriculum …

The Attitudes And Social Identity Of Faculty After Participating In Interprofessional Education, Andrea Kessler

Interprofessional education (IPE) is a global initiative to prepare pre-licensure health professional students for health care team collaboration (WHO, 2010). However, many barriers limit IPE development in academia, including academic structure and faculty participation. The purpose of this study is to better understand how participation in IPE programs affects faculty social identity and their attitudes toward IPE curriculum inclusion. The use of social identity theory and transformational learning theory conceptually guide the research process. Examining Predictors Of First Year College Student Retention, Kristyn Muller, Emily Feuer, Meghan Nyman, Karen Sokolowski, Leah Rotella
New York Journal of Student Affairs
The researchers developed a mixed-methods study to determine what characteristics of the student experience are associated with college student retention. The study used the College Persistence Questionnaire (CPQ) as the primary tool to evaluate students’ likeliness to persist at their university and then conducted individual interviews with students to gain a greater understanding of their academic and social habits. The findings suggest that efforts to improve student retention must impact student experiences both in and out of the classroom.
