Enhancing Freshman Engineering Instruction With In-Class Interaction Systems And E-Books, Branimir Pejcinovic, Phillip K. Wong
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations
Electrical engineering students in our department take a year-long series of courses which introduces electrical engineering as a discipline and provides good grounding in engineering problem solving and programing. We have recently attempted to make the second course in the sequence more engaging by applying active learning techniques, including assigned reading and exercises prior to lectures, in-class exercises using a classroom interaction system, and programming exercises during lectures. Our results are mixed: while we think that students have learned more than if we had not used these techniques, we have not completely won over our students. While using an e-book …

I Have To Say "I Love You" In A ... Affirmation?: Five Forms Of Demonstrating Our Love For Our Students, Rita Shea-Van Fossen, Gary Stark
Conference Papers in Published Proceedings
Many OBTCers share a love for teaching and a love for our students. However, is it OK to demonstrate this love and, if so, how? This session utilizes Coleman’s 5 Love Languages (5LL) as a framework for an interactive session discussing the advantages and challenges in expressing one’s love for his or her students. Participants are encouraged to complete the 5LL survey prior to attending the session at http://www.5lovelanguages.com/ to use in an interactive exercise on expressing one’s love. The facilitators will discuss their own experiences when they let their love flow. Come out and feel the love!
Quantifying Student Progress Through Bloom's Taxonomy Cognitive Categories In Computer Programming Courses, Candido Cabo
Quantifying Student Progress Through Bloom's Taxonomy Cognitive Categories In Computer Programming Courses, Candido Cabo
Publications and Research
Quantifying Student Progress through Bloom’s Taxonomy Cognitive Categories in Computer Programming Courses Computer programming courses are gateway courses with low passing grades, which may result in student attrition and transfers out of engineering and computer science degrees. Progress in student learning can be conceptualized by the different cognitive levels or categories described in Bloom’s taxonomy, which, from the lowest to the highest order processes, include: knowledge, comprehension, application, analysis, evaluation, and synthesis. The purpose of this study is to gain insight into how students transfer their conceptual knowledge and comprehension of computer programming concepts (knowledge and comprehension categories in Bloom’s …
To The Mathematical Beach, Francis Su
To The Mathematical Beach, Francis Su
All HMC Faculty Publications and Research
What context am I missing that hinders my connection with my students? How often do I take the time to get to know their backgrounds? What are the primary experiences that shaped them, and do those present obstacles or opportunities for learning? And in what ways does the mathematical beach say “open to all” but still feel restricted?
These questions appear unrelated to mathematics, but if we ignore their effects, some of our students will not flourish.
Individual Differences In Digital Badging: Do Learner Characteristics Matter?, Joey R. Fanfarelli, Thomas Rudy Mcdaniel
Individual Differences In Digital Badging: Do Learner Characteristics Matter?, Joey R. Fanfarelli, Thomas Rudy Mcdaniel
Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
Badge use has rapidly expanded in recent years and has benefited a variety of applications. However, a large portion of the research has applied a binary useful or not useful approach to badging. Few studies examine the characteristics of the user and the impact of those characteristics on the effectiveness of the badging system. This study takes preliminary steps toward that cause, examining the effectiveness of a badging system across two web-based university courses in relation to the individual differences of the learners. Individual differences are examined through the lens of Long-Dziuban reactive behavior types and traits. Results revealed differences …

Honoring Diversity In An Online Classroom: Approaches Used By Instructors Engaging Through An Lms, Jacob Petersen
Honoring Diversity In An Online Classroom: Approaches Used By Instructors Engaging Through An Lms, Jacob Petersen
Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Theses and Other Student Research
This is an inquiry into how online instructors embrace the diversity of their student body while facing the inherent differences between a traditional face-to-face class and one that is taught online. Current research suggests that diversity in a traditional classroom is an asset if the instructor is sensitive to students’ backgrounds. This paper examines if such philosophies in traditional classrooms translate well into a distance education environment, where the student body may be even more diverse than a face-to-face class, but possibly unrecognizable because of the lack of physical cues. Research on the topic of multiculturalism in an online classroom …

Introducing Undergraduates To Open Access And The Power Of Collaboration Between Scholarly Communications And Instruction Librarians, Kristin Laughtin-Dunker, Annie Knight
Library Presentations, Posters, and Audiovisual Materials
Undergraduates are often left out of conversations surrounding open access. While they may not share the same concerns about publishing and prestige as faculty and graduate students, they do consume vast amounts of information, and thus can benefit just as much as those farther in their academic careers by knowing how to find, evaluate, and use open access resources. This presentation highlights a successful collaboration between the presenters in their respective roles as scholarly communications librarian and course developer to create and implement curriculum for a 3-unit information literacy course to teach undergraduate students about open access principles. Once the …
Developing An Understanding Of How College Students Experience Interactive Instructional Technology: A Ux Perspective, Adam Wagler
Developing An Understanding Of How College Students Experience Interactive Instructional Technology: A Ux Perspective, Adam Wagler
Department of Educational Administration: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Technology is increasingly mobile and social, resulting in dynamic digital and interactive environments. The ubiquitous nature of interactive instructional technology presents new paradigms for higher education, creating challenges for instructors to compete for time and attention as students are bombarded by information in a digital, media rich world. The problem being studied, with all of these technological advancements, is how instructors can approach these challenges from a user experience (UX) perspective. A macro level view sees college students taking multiple courses at a time, over many semesters, and using different interactive instructional technology that mix with other forms of online …

Making All Children Count: Teach For All And The Universalizing Appeal Of Data, Daniel Friedrich, Mia Walter, Erica Eva Colmenares
Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity
In this paper, we argue that in order to bind Teach For All’s universal/izing statement of problems and solutions to the specificities and the special conditions of member programs’ local contexts, what is needed is a shared set of discursive practices, a way of bringing together the commonalities found in each country while separating the noise of particular politics and histories. That common set of discursive practices is shaped around the notion of data. This paper is structured as follows: First, we contextualize Teach for All by (briefly) juxtaposing the universal and specific elements of the network, including the organization’s …

Is Service-Learning The Answer? Preparing Teacher Candidates To Work With Ells Through Service-Learning Experiences, Sandra Rodriguez-Arroyo
Scholarship of Metropolitan Mission
In an effort to address the gaps in preparing teacher candidates (TCs) to work with English Language Learners (ELLs), service-learning experiences (SLE) were integrated into two courses within a teacher education program. This exploratory case study sought to explore the outcomes of teacher candidates (TCs) engaged in SLE with diverse students and families, particularly ELLs. Content analysis of students’ reflections provided insights of the impact of the SLE. Findings indicate that participating in service-learning with ELLs provides opportunities for TCs to engage in positive interactions that help to address misconceptions about students, families, and communities. TCs also began to confront …

Blended Learning Research and Open Educational Resources
As our classrooms become more culturally and experientially diverse, what can we on our campuses do to ensure that all students have the opportunity to succeed? Many professional development opportunities aimed at helping faculty enhance their teaching practices often overlook the role of cultural competence in teaching and learning and fail to effectively integrate cultural sensitivity with high impact pedagogies. Factors such as race, ethnicity, and socioeconomic status can have a significant impact on a student’s educational experiences. There is a growing body of research that identifies such issues and describes tested strategies for helping both faculty and students overcome …

What Stick Figures Tell Us About Irish Politics: Creating A Critical And Collaborative Learning Space, Sharon Feeney, John Hogan, Paul Donnelly
Articles
This paper focuses upon the interpretation of freehand drawings produced by a small sample of 220 first-year students taking an Irish politics introductory module in response to the question, ‘What is Irish Politics?’ By sidestepping cognitive verbal processing routes, through employing freehand drawing, we aim to create a critical and collaborative learning environment, where students develop their capacity for interpretation and critical self-reflection. This is because the freehand drawing technique, as part of a critical pedagogy, can generate a more critical and inclusive perspective, as visual representations permit us to comprehend the world differently, and understand how others also see …

When an education professor and a reference librarian sought to improve the quality of undergraduate student research, their partnership led to a new focus on assessing the research process in addition to the product. In this study, we reflect on our collaborative experience introducing information literacy as the foundation for undergraduate teacher education research. We examine the outcomes of this collaboration, focusing on the assessment of the process. Using a mixed methods approach, we found that direct instruction supporting effective research strategies positively impacted student projects. Our data also suggest that undergraduate students benefit from not only sound research strategies, …

Supporting student success in entry-level mathematics courses at the undergraduate level has and continues to be a challenge. Recently we have seen an increased reliance on technological supports including software to supplement more traditional in-class instruction. In this paper, we explore the effects on student performance of the use of a computer software program to supplement instruction in an entry-level mathematics course at the undergraduate level, specifically, a pre-calculus course. Relying on data from multiple sections of the course over various semesters, we compare student performance in those classes utilizing the software against those in which it was not used. …
