One Day I Will Destroy This Place, Shyam Patel

The Goose

My personal narrative reveals the complex and often ineffable journey that I experience from academia to home and from home to academia. I speak to the different modes of walking that such a journey necessitates: walking back home, into a sea of whiteness, and out of academia. As I make my way from Toronto to Montréal, from my residence in academia to where I call home, I carry with me the cruel optimism of education, weighing down the steps that I take, I attempt to grapple with spatial negotiations. It often feels like an arduous and never-ending passage. Still, my …

2023-November-15-The Value Of Higher Education In Tennessee, University Marketing And Communication, East Tennessee State University

ETSU News

I have written before about the value of higher education to both individuals as well as our communities. Now, I am proud to share that East Tennessee State University has joined forces with nine other public universities in Tennessee to help share that message across the state. Through a new campaign called “Four the Future,” we are working to increase awareness of the strong return on investment our universities provide for all Tennesseans.

At an individual level, a university education remains the surest path to economic mobility. Median earnings for bachelor’s degree-holders are 84 percent higher than those …

Exploring The Impact Of A Student-Faculty Partnership Program At A Hispanic Serving Institution, Alyssa G. Cavazos, Lesley Chapa, Javier Cavazos Vela

Writing and Language Studies Faculty Publications

Guided by a strength-based framework and counter-storying lens, we use a qualitative case study approach (Cook-Sather, 2020; Cook-Sather & Motz-Storey, 2016) to explore students’ experiences with a teaching partnership program. A Students as Learners and Teachers (SaLT) model to student-instructor partnership positions students as consultants in a faculty member’s course in which they are not currently enrolled (Cook-Sather, 2020). Following a case study analysis with student and faculty partners in a SaLT program at a HSI, several themes were identified. Themes emerging from student participants included: empathy, personal growth, solidarity, and feedback awareness. Faculty partners’ themes included: receptivity, resistance, and …

The Challenges Of Minoritized Contingent Faculty In Higher Education, Edna Chun, Alvin Evans

Navigating Careers in Higher Education Series

The Challenges of Minoritized Contingent Faculty in Higher Education offers a probing and unvarnished look at the employment challenges of these faculty members in four-year institutions. With dramatic shifts in the faculty workforce and nearly three-quarters of instructional positions in United States institutions now off the tenure track, contingent faculty have become the essential, frontline workers of higher education. Remarkably little research attention has focused on the experiences of minoritized contingent faculty in this new academic underclass. Based on in-depth interviews coupled with extensive research, the book highlights the double marginalization that can occur due to secondary employment status in …

Are The Housing Staff Alright? A Hermeneutic Phenomenological Examination Of The Experiences Of On-Campus Student Housing Professionals Through The Covid-19 Pandemic, Megan J. Chibanga

Teacher Education, Educational Leadership & Policy ETDs

College and university housing professionals served a role they were generally underprepared for as long-term crisis managers during the global COVID-19 pandemic. The COVID-19 pandemic interrupted and shifted higher education operating structures on a grand scale, and housing staff were asked to continue operating on-campus housing facilities throughout the ever-changing response to COVID-19. The purpose of this hermeneutic phenomenological study was to understand the lived experiences of housing professionals during the COVID-19 pandemic. Through the collective experiences of 21 participants three major threads emerged: comfort in the unknown, a need for connection and community, and relentless resilience. Each of these …

ETSU News

The first year of college provides excitement, opportunities to learn and make new friends, and a degree of newfound freedom for young adults. It can also give them a bit of anxiety and uncertainty as they navigate a larger campus and tougher classes than they had in high school.

That’s where first-year experience (FYE) courses come in, helping to make the transition from high school to college smoother for students. At East Tennessee State University, “ETSU 1020,” or “Foundations for Student Success,” does just that.

While it has been through a couple of name changes in its history, ETSU 1020 …

2023-November-13-A Chance Encounter.Pdf, University Advancement, East Tennessee State University, University Marketing And Communication, East Tennessee State University

ETSU News

It’s a story of chance encounters, dreams being realized, and a love for bluegrass music, one that extends from Michigan to the mountains of Tennessee.

For Jim Kortge, his college preparation led him into a career in engineering physics, but he always loved music. He played violin, then viola, through high school and big band/jazz guitar for years. When he heard Earl Scruggs’ “Foggy Mountain Breakdown” he had to learn banjo.

He and his wife Kathy (who plays Dobro) would often travel from their Fenton, Michigan home to various bluegrass events, including one at Silver Dollar City in Branson, Missouri. …
