Influences On The Choice Of Library Science Graduate Study: An Examination Of Cultural And Social Capital, Economic Factors, Gender, And Race, Rhonda K. Armstrong Jan 2019

Influences On The Choice Of Library Science Graduate Study: An Examination Of Cultural And Social Capital, Economic Factors, Gender, And Race, Rhonda K. Armstrong

Ed.D. Dissertations

The demographics of the library and information profession in the United States, which is primarily White and female, do not reflect the diversity of the population and those libraries serve. To further the understanding of who chooses library science graduate programs and how one might take social justice actions for more diversity, this study employed a post-positivist, quantitative study blended with critical theory. The study used Perna’s college choice model, which considers cultural capital, social capital, and economic factors as influential on college choice decisions. The study utilized a secondary data set, the Baccalaureate and Beyond Longitudinal Study 2008/2012 data …

Personal And Educational Differences In College Students’ Attitudes Toward Social Justice, Michael Di Bianca B.A., Perrin Robinson M.S., Mary Jo Coiro Ph.D Jan 2019

Personal And Educational Differences In College Students’ Attitudes Toward Social Justice, Michael Di Bianca B.A., Perrin Robinson M.S., Mary Jo Coiro Ph.D

Jesuit Higher Education: A Journal

Many colleges and universities encourage students to engage with social justice issues in their education and career discernment. However, a variety of individual attributes and life experiences may predict how college students develop an awareness of and attitudes toward social justice, perhaps including ways in which students relate to their own challenging life experiences and encounter others’ experiences of injustice. This study explored the relationship between individual attributes, educational experiences and social justice attitudes among a sample of 347 college students who completed self-report surveys. Specifically, this study examined a) help-seeking attitudes, b) self-compassion, c) prior experience receiving mental health …

Educating For Justice: Curricular Social Justice Education At Institutions Of Higher Education, Darby Ratliff Jan 2019

Educating For Justice: Curricular Social Justice Education At Institutions Of Higher Education, Darby Ratliff

Jesuit Higher Education: A Journal

This study examined the efficacy of college and university outcomes that call for their students to have an understanding of justice before graduation. Situated at a small, religiously affiliated, private, four-year institution and utilizing its own “justice attribute” learning outcomes, this thesis considered the way that graduating students who have completed the “justice” designation understand justice and how they formed that particular understanding. In the end, this study found that students have an understanding of justice and social justice, but faculty members need to do more to translate this knowledge into skills for social change in order to become culturally …

Assessment Of Perceived Levels Of Stress And Coping Mechanisms Among University Students, Nancy Adomako-Saahene

All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects

Majority of researchers have documented stress among college students. This study contributes to the existing literature on stress by assessing the relationship between perceived stress levels and the coping strategies utilized by university students. The study was conducted using a descriptive, inferential, cross-sectional, and correlational research design. The population for this study was students at a large, Midwestern university. A convenience sampling technique was used to select the students for the study. Perceived Stress Scale (PSS) was used to assess the participant’s perceived level of stress, whereas COPE Inventory was used to examine strategies participants use in coping with stress. …

What Moves You? How Sbae Teachers Navigate Program Migration, Becky Haddad, Johnathan Velez, Josh Stewart Jan 2019

What Moves You? How Sbae Teachers Navigate Program Migration, Becky Haddad, Johnathan Velez, Josh Stewart

Department of Agricultural Leadership, Education, and Communication: Faculty Publications

Little data exists to examine the stigmatized phenomenon of program mobility within agricultural education. Our research starts the conversation through interviews with eight School-Based Agricultural Education (SBAE) teachers across the United States, using qualitative phenomenology, to provide a unique perspective of retention through migration. We define teacher migration as a program move while choosing to remain in SBAE. Utilizing the theoretical lens of expansive learning through activity systems (Engeström, 2009), we present teacher migration as a means to learn and grow in the craft of teaching within SBAE, particularly among teachers with more than eight years of experience. Although additional …

Unleashing The Potential Of University Entrepreneurship Education: A Mandate For A Broader Perspective, Donna M. De Carolis, Barrie E. Litzky Jan 2019

Unleashing The Potential Of University Entrepreneurship Education: A Mandate For A Broader Perspective, Donna M. De Carolis, Barrie E. Litzky

New England Journal of Entrepreneurship

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to highlight the ways in which traditional views of entrepreneurs and entrepreneurship have inadvertently limited entrepreneurship education. The authors propose a broader view of what it means to be an entrepreneur and describe a disruptive approach to entrepreneurship education, one that centers around building students’ entrepreneurial mindset. By tapping into students’ “inner entrepreneur” and nurturing their abilities to think and act creatively, embrace failure, effect change and be resilient, the authors are preparing them for the challenges of the twenty-first century labor market. Design/methodology/approach – This is a perspective paper about how …

Exploration Of Growth Mindset Application In Communication Sciences And Disorders, Kelly Jean Rutherford Jan 2019

Exploration Of Growth Mindset Application In Communication Sciences And Disorders, Kelly Jean Rutherford

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

As early as 1988, Carol Dweck began a line of research connecting motivation and intelligence that later became known as mindset theory (Dweck & Leggett, 1988). This study explored the feasibility of applying Dweck’s growth mindset model to challenges in the field of Communication Sciences and Disorder (CSD). Interviews were conducted with higher education administrators who are directly affected by requirements of program standards using a phenomenological design. Findings suggested that growth mindset beliefs and practices are used in many ways across faculty, curriculum, and student domains; however, participants identified growth mindset concepts of willingness to embrace change, learning from …

Development Of Global And International Studies In Social Sciences Courses With Community College Faculty At Parkland College, Isabel Scarborough Ph.D.

Global Studies Initiatives in Social Sciences 2018 - 2019

This report highlights the work accomplished in training a group of social science faculty in instructional design and participatory learning pedagogy to help them enhance and improve the global studies sections taught in their individual courses. The workshops and training imparted focused on helping these faculty incorporate current scholarship into their course materials from underrepresented world areas such as the European Union, Eastern Europe, Eurasia, and Russia. This project concluded with the addition of sample teaching materials and redesigned syllabi on global studies to Parkland College’s open access repository—SPARK. This collection of teaching resources—represented by sample assignments, rubrics, and faculty …

Live Ambience And Homestead Away From Home: Social Media Use And Dependency By Visiting Chinese Students In The United States, Zixue Tai, Jue Lu, Fengbin Hu

Journalism and Media Faculty Publications

This study investigates social media dependency relations among Chinese college students during their three-month study abroad sojourn in the United States. Data were collected using a multimethod approach of ethnography, field observation, and in-depth interviews. Inspired by the lens of media system dependency (MSD) theory, the analysis focuses on the diverse goals and motivations that drive student behavior in social media engagement, as well as various contextual factors leading students to adapt and transition to the U.S. social networking sites (SNS), and the subsequent outcomes. The findings indicate that task-driven and assignment-centered goals dominate social media use, and that multidimensional …
