The Relationship Between Student Engagement And The Development Of Character In Mission Driven Faith-Based Colleges And Universities As Measured By The National Survey Of Student Engagement, David M. Turi

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

For many institutions devoted to their mission, especially those that state as their I goal the promotion of character development, the need for measurement tools becomes a priority. These tools can by used not only to assess the stated outcomes, but also to guide I institutional policies, practices, and improvements. The purpose of this study is to determine whether educationally purposeful activities and institutional type are related to the student development of character and how these relationships differ across institutional type. The data from senior students at four-year institutions who completed the National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) were used. …

Open Wikis And The Protection Of Institutional Welfare, Andrew G. West, Insup Lee Feb 2012

Open Wikis And The Protection Of Institutional Welfare, Andrew G. West, Insup Lee

Andrew G. West

Much has been written about wikis’ reliability and use in the classroom. This research bulletin addresses the negative impacts on institutional welfare that can arise from participating in and supporting wikis. The open nature of the platform, which is fundamental to wiki operation and success, enables these negative consequences. A finite user base that can be determined a priori (e.g., a course roster) minimizes the security implications, hence our discussion in this bulletin primarily concerns open or public wikis that accept contributions from a broad and unknown set of Internet users.

Get On The Bus: College Talent & Industry Tours, Christopher Sell

Academic Leadership Academy

Employers and career services professionals are always looking for ways to efficiently connect students to internships and job opportunities early in their college careers. Streamlining the early identification process for college students and employers has become vital to higher education institutions and companies in Michigan as they strive to retain talent in the state. College and university educators are equally committed to helping students learn the professional networking skills necessary for achieving their career goals.

In order to address both outcomes, career services staff at Western Michigan University (WMU) created a five-day immersion program that allows engineering & applied sciences …

A Primer On Copyright And Fair Use, Ann E. Biswas, Charles J. Russo

English Faculty Publications

One student creates a video for class using a Lady Gaga song. Another puts together a PowerPoint presentation about the Vietnam War using images she found online. A third student adds a link to a YouTube video in a blog post for an English class. One teacher photocopies and distributes articles from a national newspaper. Another teacher records a television documentary at home and shows it to her class.

Did those students and teachers violate copyright law? The complex, evolving laws governing copyright and fair use are muddied by the rapid growth and use of technology in schools, yet it's …

Assessing Reasons For Involvement In Student Leadership Activities, Dirk Barram, Scott Wade, Christopher Koch Jan 2012

Assessing Reasons For Involvement In Student Leadership Activities, Dirk Barram, Scott Wade, Christopher Koch

Growth: The Journal of the Association for Christians in Student Development

The purpose of this study was to examine the factors that either prompt or prevent undergraduate student participation in leadership development activities. A survey including 35 items was created. The survey was rated by experts for construct validity. Based on expert ratings, 17 items were retained. Internal reliability of the items was .87. Both a factor analysis and a qualitative analysis of the items indicated a single factor for student involvement centered on personal development. An analysis of demographic variables indicated that students planning to attend graduate school were more favorable toward involvement in student leadership activities. Implications for improving …

Some Of The Early Story: The Beginnings Of The Association For Christians In Student Development, David M. Johnstone

Growth: The Journal of the Association for Christians in Student Development

A reasonable critique of American student affairs is that the profession does not utilize its heritage and history. The profession leans heavily on the praxis of its responsibilities to the detriment that it has a long history and those who worked diligently in years past have made what happens today possible. The Association for Christians in Student Development has a significant history. Some of it parallels contemporary culture, while some of it is unique. However, the current association reflects the vision of early “pioneers.” This article seeks to begin filling the gap, provide a sense of how the association arose …

What About The “T’S”?: Addressing The Needs Of A Transgender Student At A Cccu Member Institution, Scott Barrett, Philip D. Byers, David M. Downey, Eric M. Gingerich Jan 2012

What About The “T’S”?: Addressing The Needs Of A Transgender Student At A Cccu Member Institution, Scott Barrett, Philip D. Byers, David M. Downey, Eric M. Gingerich

Growth: The Journal of the Association for Christians in Student Development

As the discussion of the LGBT community continues to evolve and inform decisions at higher education institutions, evidence suggests the “T”–transgender–discussion at CCCU institutions has remained stagnant and largely unrecognized. In June 2011 ACSD’s New Professionals Collaborative asked professionals to present a case study on how a CCCU institution would house a transgender student who had already been admitted into the institution. The authors found the literature on the subject to be sparse, and within the Christian context it is nearly nonexistent. The few precedents and best practices on housing a transgender student do not appear to align with the …

Experiences Of Gay And Lesbian Students Attending Faith-Based Colleges: Considerations For Improving Practice, Joel M. Wentz, Roger D. Wessel

Growth: The Journal of the Association for Christians in Student Development

The intent of this 2010 qualitative, phenomenological study was to understand the experiences of undergraduates who identified as gay/lesbian in faith-based colleges. Some of the issues students encountered were identity denial, perceptions of homosexuality on campus, exposure to off-campus cultures, concealing sexual identity, establishing a peer support network, and reconciling faith and sexual identity. Participants discussed support from faculty/staff, counseling services, school policies, male residence hall culture, and perceptions of administrators. Considerations for improving practice include making informed enrollment decisions, supporting sexual identity formation during college, reconciling faith and sexual identity, encouraging supportive networks, and developing policies regarding campus sexual …
