White Male College Students: An Examination Of Identity Development, Masculinity, And Institutional Connections, Randy Ott Jan 2011

White Male College Students: An Examination Of Identity Development, Masculinity, And Institutional Connections, Randy Ott

Dissertations

White, male college (WCM) students have been a central focus of researchers in higher education throughout its existence, but have not been studied as a group whose identity development is a key issue. This study looked at WCM, their masculinity levels, and how their past connections with peers, instructors, or staff influenced their White identity development. In this study I utilized a phenomenological research approach to learn about the lived experiences of eight WCM. The eight WCM were at least junior status at a medium size, Midwestern, public university.

The results point to multiple conclusions and themes. This study supported …

An Analysis Of Bachelor's Degree Production By Kentucky Public 4-Year Universities: Before And After The Kentucky Postsecondary Education Improvement Act Of 1997, Jonathan Pruitt

MPA/MPP/MPFM Capstone Projects

With the passage of the Postsecondary Education Improvement Act of 1997, Governor Paul Patton and the Kentucky General Assembly sought to improve the standard of living and quality of life in the state through increasing the educational attainment of its citizens. The production of bachelor’s degrees by the state’s public four-year universities is a key driver in increasing educational attainment and, therefore, meeting the goals of the legislation. This paper uses interrupted time series regression analysis to evaluate whether Kentucky public four-year universities have increased the rate at which bachelor’s degrees are produced in the period of time since the …

La Producción De Investigación En Las Universidades Privadas: Estudio De Un Caso, Gus Gregorutti

Faculty Publications

This case study describes how Tecnológico de Monterrey, in northern Mexico, has experienced a qualitative and quantitative increase in its intellectual productivity. In less than ten years, this university has moved from generating few ideas to being one of most distinguished Mexican private universities in the production of knowledge, patents and several research-derived businesses. This work explores how the re-elaboration of the institutional mission and the implementation of a model of research classes, among others, were decisive factors to increase the production of ideas. In this way, the university has increased its visibility and international ranking, attracting qualified re-searchers, developing …

A Study On Becoming An Alternatively Certified Career And Technical Educator, Kymberli Cotton-Flanagan Jan 2011

A Study On Becoming An Alternatively Certified Career And Technical Educator, Kymberli Cotton-Flanagan

Dissertations

This mixed method study examined the perspectives of twelve practicing high school CTE teachers engaged in a newly approved university model for alternative certification.

Using Creswell's (2008) Sequential Exploratory Design and the lens of adult learning theory as established in Knowles' (1970) Theory of Andragogy, this study examines how participants in this CTE alternative certification program, describe their experiences as related to the assumptions of adult learning. Relationships between participant's adult learning preferences and the extent to which they experienced their program were also examined.

While literature on alternative certification theories and implications is available, specific research on the use …

Globalization reflects a shift in the workforce development paradigm. This descriptive qualitative case study was conducted at a Midwestern university with 12 student participants and three faculty members from three engineering programs. The purpose of this body of work was to explore the participants‘ perceptions of globalization, and to understand the implications of globalization on career and technical education (CTE) programs, program selection, and career choices, the training of the students enrolled in CTE programs, and the role of teaching faculty and the college in this process.

The Not-So-Sweet Side Of Sugars, Maximilian Klein Jan 2011

The Not-So-Sweet Side Of Sugars, Maximilian Klein

Quill & Scope

Refined sugar is becoming highly scrutinized as a possible explanation for the explosion of diabetes and obesity related health problems in our nation. We are often told by the media that added sugar, high fructose corn syrup (HFCS) in particular, is bad for our health and we should minimize our consumption of it, but scientists and health care providers rarely take the time to explain why the added sugar is detrimental to our health. The research behind sugar metabolism has been well elu-cidated, and I propose in this article that it is the high level of fructose in the average …

Social Causes Of Obesity, Gregory Katz

Quill & Scope

Two thirds of our country is overweight and a third is obese. Meanwhile, medical costs continue to rise, largely as a consequence of treating those with chronic disease. And our current medical sys-tem seems more focused on treating symptoms of diseases like diabetes, hypertension, and heart disease rather than their root causes. This paper examines the origins of these problems and at-tempts to determine the role of physicians in reversing these trends.
