Too often, new faculty members tackle teaching roles at an unfamiliar campus feeling lost and completely on their own. That is not a problem at Eastern Illinois University (EIU), where a rapidly growing faculty development program reaches out to new employees to encourage and support them in all facets of their lives, professional and personal.

African American Millennial College Students: Owning The Technological Middle Passage, Aretha Marbley, William Hull, Catherine Polydore, Fred Bonner, Hansel Burley

Faculty Research & Creative Activity

Set in a conceptual framework highlighting generational differences and socioeconomic and racial inequity, this article discusses the role of African Americans in the anticipated future changes related to technology. Focusing specifically on college-aged African American Millennial students, who they are, and the role technology plays in their development of identity, this article will bring much needed attention to this population. Additionally, the uses of and access to information pertinent to academic advancement for this cohort will be explored.

The Department of Mathematics at the University of Nebraska – Lincoln (UNL) has several programs which promote undergraduate research in a variety of ways. Two of these are summer programs which draw from a national applicant pool: The Nebraska REU in Applied Mathematics (Section 1) is a traditional NSF-funded REU site, and Nebraska IMMERSE (Section 2) offers a summer “bridge” program (with a research bent) for students about to start graduate school in mathematics. IMMERSE is a relatively new program, started in 2004 as part of the department’s Mentoring through Critical Transition Points (MCTP) grant from NSF. The MCTP grant …

Seeking Social Support Among Female Graduate Teaching Assistants, Lisa M. Theisen, Robert A. Davilla

Basic Communication Course Annual

This study investigated how female graduate teaching assistants (GTAs) develop social support and the influence that these relationships have on their academic, teaching, and social lives. In-depth interviews were conducted with seven female GTAs in a Communication Studies master’s degree program at a large southern university. Results revealed that participants formed closer, more personal relationships with other graduate students, specifically other GTAs, and that these relationships influenced their academic lives, including teaching. Participants formed meaningful but more formal relationships with faculty. Relationships with faculty had little influence on their teaching but influenced their graduate coursework and post-graduate plans.

Online Problem-Based Learning Approach In Higher Education., Roisin Donnelly

Books/Book Chapters

This paper begins with a brief review of the history of problem-based learning (PBL) integrated with online learning, and surveys relevant learning theory, including constructivism and cognitivism. Recent case-study research on a postgraduate diploma module in learning and teaching for faculty and lecturers in higher education is then provided to illustrate the key issues for both faculty and students in this evolving area. Emerging trends in combining PBL and online learning are outlined, along with potential opportunity to continue to research the topic in a different light. Concurrent/dual enrollment programs at postsecondary educational institutions have rapidly proliferated across the country during the last several years with wide variations in the structure and composition of such programs. Having recently completed a pilot phase of its first dual enrollment program, the University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO) has enjoyed great success due to a relatively unique partnership formed between the university and Omaha area school districts.
