Digital libraries exist symbiotically with traditional physical libraries creating an ecosystem of hybrid services built around innovation and creativity. Leading the digital library requires the ambidexterity to keep up to date with trends and developments and be a catalyst to lead change management. With the pandemic, academic libraries learnt to become champions of agility in transforming their services to meet the new demands and needs of the community they serve. Libraries are now facing new challenges; the disbanding of the Institute of Museum and Library Services in the United States, the rising threats of censorship, and the gradual erosion of …

Leading And Collaborating In A Complex Space: Developing And Evaluating A Course Materials Program, Catherine Fraser Riehle, Melissa Gomis
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Libraries: Faculty Publications
Librarians at a large public university describe ongoing efforts to develop a strategic, multi-pronged Libraries Course Materials Program to reduce course material costs for students. These efforts include the integration of course materials in the university’s learning management system in addition to offering course materials reviews, consultations, and grant opportunities for instructors. A pilot program in the College of Business provided a path for direct outreach to instructors as well as significant potential student cost savings and revealed challenges related to communication and recruitment. Authors share their approach to program evaluation for understanding and communicating impact and for estimating the …

Exploring The Impact Of Research And Instruction Librarian Accessibility On Graduate Student Achievement, Fatemeh Kholoosi Raftar, Jennifer Dyer
Velma K. Waters Library Faculty Publications
This article explores the impact of embedding a research and instruction librarian within the graduate school at East Texas A&M University to address the unique research challenges faced by graduate students. Relocating the librarian to the graduate school increased accessibility to library services, promoted personalized support, and enhanced visibility among students and faculty. Data collected through LibInsight and user feedback revealed significant increases in research consultations, workshop attendance, and faculty engagement following the relocation. The initiative also led to the development of targeted instructional resources and collaborative research tools. While logistical and awareness challenges were encountered, the outcomes highlight the …
How We Stopped Charging Students To Submit Etds: Case Study Of A Five-Year Odyssey, Gregory Wiedeman, Emily Kilcer
How We Stopped Charging Students To Submit Etds: Case Study Of A Five-Year Odyssey, Gregory Wiedeman, Emily Kilcer
Journal of Graduate Librarianship
In 2019, the Graduate School at the University at Albany, State University of New York wrote to the University Libraries about the processing of archival copies of electronic theses and dissertations (ETDs), hoping to reduce or eliminate deposit fees for authors. Interested library faculty and staff self-assembled into a project team and found that the university’s switch in 2008 to a born-digital submission workflow provided by an external vendor was deeply flawed as a service, and unnecessarily costly to student authors. Later, in 2013, the Libraries established an open access institutional repository (IR), which had the potential to support a …

Towards A Pedagogy Of Self-Determination: Teaching With Generative Ai In The Library Classroom, Russ Peterson
Towards A Pedagogy Of Self-Determination: Teaching With Generative Ai In The Library Classroom, Russ Peterson
Georgia Library Quarterly
With the swift ascendence of generative AI tools like ChatGPT disrupting the academic and cultural landscape, librarians have debated how to respond to this incredibly consequential technology. From pondering its applications in completing rote tasks to denouncing its ethical conundrums, the debate has mainly centered on whether AI should even be used. In an instruction context, the scholarly conversation has been somewhat limited to how the ACRL Framework can be utilized when teaching with generative AI. What has yet to emerge is an assertive pedagogy that practically engages with generative AI while affirming the agency of students as independent actors …

“It Is Such A Hidden Curriculum Thing”: Graduate Students’ Perceptions Of Publishing, Christy Caldwell, Martha Stuit, Lucia Orlando
Journal of Graduate Librarianship
Becoming published authors presents a learning curve for graduate students. Publishing literacy is part of the hidden curriculum of graduate school because publishing is generally not taught consistently but more commonly through ad hoc conversations with advisors, advice from peers, and the occasional workshop. Our study surveyed graduate students at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) who had already published or were expecting to publish journal articles. Survey questions asked students about the publishing process, defined by us as the stage of the post-writing process when a manuscript is ready to publish. Our data demonstrate that publishing expectations are …

On Friday, September 6, 2024, the learning sciences field lost a giant in Dr. Nora Sabelli, 87 years old, a personal mentor to many researchers and an inspiration to so many learning scientists and STEM leaders. Nora’s first professional career was as a computational chemist, and later she became a passionate leader in research for improving STEM education. Nora’s time as a senior program officer at the National Science Foundation’s (NSF) Education and Human Resources (EHR) directorate was legendary; she was a force of nature who reshaped funding priorities for stronger science and a stronger connection of science to education …

Investigating The Lived Experiences Of Graduate Students At The University Of New Mexico, Holly M. Surbaugh, Olivia Baca, Liz Cooper, Mark Emmons, Teresa Y. Neely
Journal of Graduate Librarianship
Researchers at the University of New Mexico used a modified critical incident technique study to explore the lived experiences of graduate students in their roles as students, researchers, and teachers. The authors interviewed 20 graduate students in 2022 and then evaluated transcribed responses through two stages of qualitative coding. The students described their multiple roles during their graduate programs and the support they seek for their academic success and overall lives, along with common themes of struggling to secure adequate resources, both financial and social. Analysis of their responses will help align practitioner strategies and library service offerings with their …

Let’S Get Digital: Retrospective Digitization Of Etds For An Institutional Repository, Marc Jaffy
Let’S Get Digital: Retrospective Digitization Of Etds For An Institutional Repository, Marc Jaffy
Journal of Graduate Librarianship
Franklin University Library conducted a retrospective digitization project to make a collection of education master’s theses available in its institutional repository. Digitizing bound theses and dissertations to make them available in an institutional repository benefits the institutional repository, the university, the student authors of the works, and external researchers. When conducting a retrospective digitization project for theses or dissertations that are protected by copyright, a university library must consider how the students’ copyright in their work affects the library’s ability to digitize the theses or dissertations and make them available in an institutional repository. University libraries should also consider making …
Our Community Chimes In, Corinne Bishop, Wendy Doucette
Our Community Chimes In, Corinne Bishop, Wendy Doucette
Journal of Graduate Librarianship
In this edition of Practitioner Panel, we share comments from the graduate librarian community about key research skills librarians cover when providing course instruction, workshops, and research consultations; types of training offered for new faculty, adjuncts, and graduate teaching assistants; and some AI tools librarians are currently using and strategies for discussing AI use with graduate students. (Some responses have been very lightly edited for typos or clarity.)
After the questions and answers, we present overviews of two notable resources, adapted from responses to our Spring 2024 call for information about conference presentations pertinent to graduate librarianship. While we did …
Expanding Our Horizons While Maintaining Our Balance, Daniel K. Blewett
Expanding Our Horizons While Maintaining Our Balance, Daniel K. Blewett
Library Scholarship
The constant winds of change have blown more collection development demands to the doorsteps of community college libraries, resulting in a stress on resources. Libraries are being asked to do more with the same or fewer resources. Many community college libraries are now supporting more than just the traditional career and technical educa- tion, or general education courses. Dual enrollment, new programs, and partnering with four-year institutions for new articulation agreements, are examples of the changing needs community colleges may experience. As institutional needs continue to evolve it will be necessary for community college libraries to expand their collection development …

The opaqueness of author naming and ordering, when coupled with power dynamics, can lead to a number of disadvantages in academic careers. In this commentary, we investigate gender differences in authorship experiences in a large prospective meta-analytic study (k = 46; n = 3,565; 12 countries). We find that women’s and men’s authorship experiences differ significantly with women reporting greater prevalence of problematic behaviors. We present seven actionable recommendations for improving the receipt and reporting of intellectual credit. Such actions are needed to ensure fairness in authorship, which is one of the most powerful factors in academics’ career outcomes.
