The Future Of Site-Based Management: Principals Are The Key, Agnes Richardson Oct 2007

The Future Of Site-Based Management: Principals Are The Key, Agnes Richardson

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

Site-Based Management (SBM), also known as decentralization, is a process that gives decision-making power over educational programs to individual schools instead of district offices with the ultimate goal of improved student learning (Hansen 2005; Tanner and Stone 1998; Walker 2007). It is a concept that was introduced to education over two decades ago (Cromwell 2005). There are a number of states and major cities in the United States that have legislated and mandated SBM programs, including Colorado, Florida, Kentucky, North Carolina, Texas, Virginia, Chicago, New York City, and Los Angeles (Chittum 2006; Walker 2007). SBM successes and failures have a …

Applying Leadership Criterion Of The European Excellence Model For Achieving Quality Management In Higher Education Institutions, Stephen Anyamele Jul 2007

Applying Leadership Criterion Of The European Excellence Model For Achieving Quality Management In Higher Education Institutions, Stephen Anyamele

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

For institutions of higher education to be successful in the future, there is the need to deliver excellence in all its operations. This means that there is a real need to develop more effective and efficient institutional management practices (Steed et al., 2005). In order to reach this goal, many institutions are turning to total quality management models such as the European Foundation for Quality management (EFQM) Excellence Model as an effective and practical tool to support improvement opportunities within higher education establishments. In an introductory text reproduced from the EFQM Excellence Model Higher Education Version (2003), the EFQM Excellence …

Initiating Your Successful Transition To School Principal, Timothy Glasspool Jul 2007

Initiating Your Successful Transition To School Principal, Timothy Glasspool

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

The role and responsibilities of the principal and assistant principal have developed and been redeveloped to meet demands and legislative impact on the American public education system. With these additional demands, principals are required to lead students and faculties to greater educational outcomes and achievement. As the role of building level leadership evolves and more principals become instructional leaders first and a managers second, opportunities for changing roles could correct assistant principal pigeon-holing. Some researchers and practitioners do not agree the assistant principal position is an appropriate training ground for the Principalship. Even some principals and researchers believe the training …

Effective Leadership Through Emotional Maturity, Linda Hyatt, Blaine Hyatt, James Hyatt Jul 2007

Effective Leadership Through Emotional Maturity, Linda Hyatt, Blaine Hyatt, James Hyatt

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

What makes a leader successful? This question has been asked throughout the ages; before one attempt to understand what makes a leader successful, one must first have a full comprehension of what constitutes success and what constitutes a leader. To merely hold the position of a leader does not make one a leader. Success is largely an individualistic interpretation of personal increase or satisfaction, whether physical, emotional, or psychological. One’s perception of success is influenced by the social contexts around the individual. A successful leader must possess certain characteristics and have the ability to transform those characteristics into action. A …

Empowerment Through Critical Pedagogy, Premakumari Dheram

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

In any multilingual country, it is imperative that the curriculum provide for a critical dialogue on the politics of language. Educators must address questions of linguistic and cultural identity especially in the context of the spread of English. Contrary to popular and academic conceptions, English has never been just a ‘link’ or ‘library’ language, and the epithets non-native speaker teacher/learner and second language teacher/learner echo a sense of marginality and displacement (Browne. 2005. Cummins.1996. Kachru.1982. Rampton.1990.Shondel.2005). For “…language itself is content, a referent for loyalties and animosities, an indicator of social statuses and personal relationships, a marker of situations and …

Playing Around: The Role Of Games In Creating World-Class Workplace Teams, Kathy Dale Jul 2007

Playing Around: The Role Of Games In Creating World-Class Workplace Teams, Kathy Dale

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

Games are certainly not the only way to build high-performance teams. Classroom training, role-playing, profile testing and other structures all play a positive role. But when team members go away from the office, dress informally and get outside their “business as usual” selves, what tends to happen is that “positions” are forgotten and people show more of their true nature. In this way, games create understanding. And when this understanding is in place, synergy can happen, that magic that makes ideas and results much greater than the sum of their parts.

Pssa Panic And Paranoia: Effects On Student Teachers, Linda Dessoye

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

It has been several years since the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) was renamed the No Child Left Behind Act. In this major expansion of the federal role in education, the No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act of 2001 required annual testing, specified a method for judging school effectiveness, set a timeline for progress, and established specific consequences in the case of failure (Wenning, 2003). The Washington Post referred to it as the “broadest rewriting of federal education policy in decades”(Milbank, 2002). The effects of the overwhelming pressure to perform well on the Pennsylvania System of School Assessment (PSSA) …

Teacher Migration From High-Performing Middle Schools: A Case Study, Richard Conley Jul 2007

Teacher Migration From High-Performing Middle Schools: A Case Study, Richard Conley

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

I recently conducted fieldwork to explore the dynamics of teacher migration and understand how it relates to teachers’ perceptions and attitudes. The research was conducted through the eyes of a sixth grade language arts/social studies’ teacher working in a middle school I will refer to as PLC (Professional Learning Community) Middle School. By spending extensive time and conducting multiple interviews with the teacher and other staff members, I was able to explore some of the reasons and conditions why teachers leave schools, particularly high-performing schools to teach in other high performing schools. Attending weekly meetings at all levels and content …

Telling Stories And Living Art: Making Room For Social Justice And Diversity In Graduate Education, Four Arrows

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

Indigenous scholars discovered that indigenous knowledge is far more than the binary opposite of western knowledge. As a concept, indigenous knowledge benchmarks the limitations of Eurocentric theory — its methodology, evidence, and conclusions — reconceptualizes the resilience and self-reliance of indigenous peoples, and underscores the importance of their own philosophies, heritages, and educational processes. Indigenous knowledge fills the ethical and knowledge gaps in Eurocentric education, research, and scholarship (2002:5).

The Creation Of A Center For Technology In Education, Jody Britten Jul 2007

The Creation Of A Center For Technology In Education, Jody Britten

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

Institutions of higher education (IHE) have long been invested in the creation of centers for further study, application, evaluation, and research. Larwood and Gattiker (1999) argue that centers must be committed to making an impact on everyday public practice. Furthermore, these authors support that there are clear benefits to centers when there is a purpose that exceeds thinking and data collection and concentrates clearly on influencing practice for goal attainment.

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

Intellectual property (IP) consists of any ideas, concepts, insignias, and symbols that are unique and original to the owner. IP has various broad categories: copyright, trademarks, patents, designs, and other types of information. The concept is best thought of as a bundle of rights protected by law. Trade secrets, expertise, and know-how, are instances of confidential company information that are also covered by IP laws. These ideas and concepts are assets to an organization or country and can be extremely valuable. It has been estimated that IP, as intangible assets, constitutes around 75 percent of the assets of publicly-listed U.S. …

Trends In Adult Education, John A. Henschke Edd

IACE Hall of Fame Repository

During the forty-three (43) years since 1964, when the Commission of Professors of Adult Education (CPAE) was established, adult education scholars around the globe have achievements in the Field of Adult Education. Some of these findings have developed into trends which had special significance for a historic occasion of the Commission on international Adult Education (CIAE) Pre-Conference of the American Association for Adult and Continuing Education (AAACE) Conference which included adult educators from various countries around the world in late 2006. These trends emerged during the opening years of the twenty-first (21st) century. A few of these trends are presented …

“Go Live In ’05”—From Hierarchy To Shared Governance In Higher Education, Peter A. Maresco Apr 2007

“Go Live In ’05”—From Hierarchy To Shared Governance In Higher Education, Peter A. Maresco

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

Higher education is in the midst of a major transformation evidenced by several factors: greater demands from stakeholders; pressure to increase student enrollment, financial uncertainty, limited resources, and a responsibility to contribute to the community’s civic and economic development. Faculty and staff in higher education are challenged to deliver education in innovative ways. This innovation requires an expedient method of governance and necessitates careful examination of the organization’s structural, cultural, and decision-making processes. To meet these demands, leaders in higher education must examine decision-making processes and design governance models that respond quickly and efficiently to their myriad of constituents.
