The Effect Of Exercise On Basel Metabolic Rate As Related To Changes In Active Tissue Mass, Arnold Garth Fisher Apr 1969

The Effect Of Exercise On Basel Metabolic Rate As Related To Changes In Active Tissue Mass, Arnold Garth Fisher

Health, Exercise, and Sports Sciences ETDs

Nineteen men between the ages of twenty-four and thirty-seven were trained for eight weeks to determine the effect of improved cardio-respiratory fitness on basal metabolic rate and body composition. The hypothesis was that a change in active tissue mass brought about by exercise would not be accompanied by a change in basal metabolic rate. Two measurements of body composition were made, lean body mass and fat-free weight. Lean body mass was estimated by the potassium-40 technique at the Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory, Los Alamos, New Mexico. Fat-free weight was estimated by hydrostatic weighing. The total lung volume of each subject …

The Effect Of Video Feedback On Learning A Motor Skill, J. W. Sanders Jan 1969

The Effect Of Video Feedback On Learning A Motor Skill, J. W. Sanders

Health, Exercise, and Sports Sciences ETDs

The purpose of the study was to investigate the effect of videotape feedback on the ability to learn a motor skill.

For the most effective learning experience, a combination of sensory impressions is essential. It was hypothesized that videotape replay would help the learner to form a clear perception of performance requirements, and it seemed advisable to study the impact that the medium of television replay might have on learning a motor skill. This study was one approximation toward this end.

Six hypotheses, all stated in the null form, were used in comparing white varsity athletes and nonathletes; Negro varsity athletes and nonathletes; Negro and white varsity athletes; Negro and white nonathletes; Negro varsity athletes and white nonathletes; and white varsity athletes and Negro nonathletes. This study was done at the University of New Mexico during the academic school year, 1967-1968. Negro and white varsity athletes selected for this study were those male undergraduate students who had earned varsity letter awards at the college level and …

The tradition of sports and games in the United States has been one of paramount importance when viewing the social history of the country. The nation's colleges and universities and their respective athletic programs have contributed to this tradition. The University of New Mexico, although a relatively late arrival on the scene of regional and national prominence in athletics, currently finds itself enjoying the reputation as the administrator of one of the decidedly superior intercollegiate athletic programs in the western part of the United States; and some isolated aspects of its overall program compare favorably with the very best to …

The Effect Of Combinations Of Mental Practice And Physical Practice On The Performance Of A Motor Skill., Ronald Milton Schaefer

Health, Exercise, and Sports Sciences ETDs

The purpose of this study was to compare combinations of physical and mental practice methods in learning a motor skill. An experiment was conducted at the University of New Mexico to test the hypothesis that combinations of mental and physical practice would be just as affective learning methods as would the use of total physical practice. Thirty-nine male university students, selected from physical education activity classes, were put into one of four groups by a method of random selection. The four groups used in the experiment were: control, physical, and two combination groups. The two combination groups practiced the motor …

The data used for the comparison between the two methods of running were collected over the last thirty seconds of the run. The two measures used in the comparison were oxygen uptake and heart rate, A. special apparatus was constructed for the …

A Cinematographical Analysis Of The Mechanical Differences Between Running On A Motor-Driven Threadmill And A Stationary Surface., Joseph C. Bowman

Health, Exercise, and Sports Sciences ETDs

It was the purpose of this study to determine, through a cinematographical analysis, if running on a treadmill produced a change in running style or form by-comparing eleven measurements including body lean, various angles of the extremities, length of stride, and. vertical body movement.

An investigation of the literature revealed that little had been done to analyze the true mechanics of running on a treadmill. There has been a large amount of research and experimentation using treadmills in universities and industry to produce a controlled situation for physiological and kinesiological studies.

The major research method used in conducting this study …

The Effects Of Mental Practice On The Development Of A Specific Motor Skill., Charles B. Corbin

Health, Exercise, and Sports Sciences ETDs

The idea that long and arduous physical practice is the way to improve motor skill performance has long been a premise on which physical educators have based programs for the development of motor skill. More recently physical educators and athletic coaches have recognized the importance of mental practicing or mind rehearsing in the development of motor skill. The idea that “imaginary practice” of a motor skill facilitates development of that motor skill has brought acclaim from athletes and performance of many types including golfers, bowlers, and many others.

A Study Of The Effects Of Social Stratification Upon Leisure Activities Of Junior High School Students In A Selected Albuquerque Area, John Robert Schuster

Health, Exercise, and Sports Sciences ETDs

Leisure is embraced by all class levels. Whereas total leisure was once an indicator of aristocratic position, as it was in Athens during the Golden Age of Greece, or that of the bum who shirks social responsibility, leisure has become increasingly significant in all levels of social stratification. Though leisure is no longer an indicator of class position, the recreation activities in which people indulge during their leisure may exhibit lines of social stratification.

Their study showed that 57.9% of the Americans tested failed the test as compared to only 8.7% of the Europeans. This discovery was one of the factors which prompted the creation of the President’s Council on Youth Fitness on September 6, 1956.

The Relationship Between Physical Fitness And Selected Personality Traits, Kenneth Gene Tillman Jul 1963

The Relationship Between Physical Fitness And Selected Personality Traits, Kenneth Gene Tillman

Health, Exercise, and Sports Sciences ETDs

The relationship of physique and personality has long challenged psychologists, physicians, and more recently, physical educators. Many studies, such as those by Sheldon, have attempted to determine correlations which might exist between a physique type and personality. However, it seems that a related area which is very important to the physical education profession has failed to receive sufficient investigation. Comparatively little research has been carried out to determine the relationship between an individual's state of physical fitness and his personality characteristics. Interest in this area leads to an even more intriguing question. Is an improvement in physical fitness accompanied by …

Health, Exercise, and Sports Sciences ETDs

If a state of physical fitness is desirable and therefore is being emphasized, what then is the best means of obtaining this state? This necessitates physical educators' evaluating closely and objectively their activity courses in order to determine what contribution their courses have made to this objective of physical fitness. Little such evaluation has been made. This study helps to evaluate the contribution of three activities toward the development of physical fitness.
