The Pupil Control Ideology Of Teachers In Selected Schools, Vivian Miller Barfield Jul 1972

The Pupil Control Ideology Of Teachers In Selected Schools, Vivian Miller Barfield

Health, Exercise, and Sports Sciences ETDs

Pupil control, one form of social control, has been identified as an indicator of the educational atmosphere in a school. In this study teacher perceptions of pupil control were measured by responses to the Pupil Control Ideology Form developed by Willower, Eidell, and Hoy. This form ranks teacher control ideology on a continuum from custodialism to humanism. Teachers in nine schools--three elementary, three junior high, and three senior high--in the Albuquerque Public School District served as subjects in this study. The schools were stratified according to the socio-economic status of their clients. At each grade level, three socio-economic groups were …

Heart Rates And Predicted Maximal Oxygen Uptake Following Training At Low To Moderate Duration And Intensity, Ronald S. Feingold

Health, Exercise, and Sports Sciences ETDs

Despite the mass of scientific data relating to the study of vigorous exercise, the literature contains little information on the minimum stress required for improvement in aerobic function. In view of the fact that the work intensity-duration relationship is far from elucidated, and considering the important implications of the concept of minimum exercise, particularly for cardiac patients and the elderly, it is imperative that further research be conducted. The present study was undertaken to describe the effects of three different work regimens of low to moderate intensity and duration. Twenty-three healthy male students at The University of New Mexico enrolled …

The Athlete's Dilemma: An Experimental Game Using A Prisoner's Dilemma Payoff Matrix Adapted To A Paddleball Tournament, Theodore William Harmon Johnson

Health, Exercise, and Sports Sciences ETDs

The "Athlete's Dilemma,” (AD) is a two-person decision-making game involving two choices: 1) the choice of playing, or 2) the choice or not playing the third game of a paddleball match. If both players choose to play the third game, they both do better in tournament scoring than if both choose not to play, but the maximum payoff for each individual can be obtained only by choosing not to play the third game while the other person chooses to play. The AD was designed to serve as a research tool for observing cooperative and competitive behavior. The problem was to …

A Comparative Study Of How Parents From Different Social Classes Perceive School Health Services, John Joseph Pelizza

Health, Exercise, and Sports Sciences ETDs

This study was designed to determine attitudes of parents from three different social classes toward school health services. The social class status of parents was determined by the use of Duncan's Social Class Index. This Index, consisting of four hundred forty-six occupations, was divided into a decile scale against which each parent's occupation was checked for a corresponding decile number. If a parent's occupation was not on the Index the investigator subjectively decided on a rating using Duncan's Social Class Index as a guide.

Parents of children enrolled in nine elementary schools (Pajarito, Coronado, Duranes, Inez, Monte Vista, Carlos Rey, …

Player-Coach Compatibility: A Study Of The Relationship Of Interpersonal Relations Orientations To Athletic Exclusion In Junior High School Baseball Programs, Dean A. Pease

Health, Exercise, and Sports Sciences ETDs

Statement of Problem: Many students are excluded from participation in school athletic programs, and thus, from an opportunity to benefit from the educational experiences afforded. While playing ability would appear to be the most logical and common-sense criterion for the exclusion of certain students, a variety of psycho-social factors may also serve as important criteria upon which the exclusion and inclusion of athletes are based. To obtain information concerning the existence of such factors, an investigation was undertaken concerning player-coach compatibility and its role in cutting students from athletic squads.

The FIRO theory, developed by Schutz, is based on the …
