An investigation into the cognitive and affective characteristics and needs of talented students has resulted in the creation of a working model for a language arts based curriculum for students in grade six. This project identifies the essential components of programs for the education of the academically talented and demonstrates how these ingredients interact in practice. The process for selecting concepts and related content in English, reading and social studies is explained. Suggestions for designing materials and for utilizing commercially prepared lessons are provided.

The purpose of the study was to investigate whether the following were predictors of mathematical giftedness as measured by the Scholastic Aptitude Test-Mathematics:

  1. family income
  2. father's level of education
  3. sex of student
  4. student's liking for school
  5. time spent on home computer by student

This study was based on The Study of Mathematically Precocious Youth done by Stanley at Johns Hopkins University.

The purpose of this study were to (1) investigate the attitude and acceptance behaviors of the regular-classroom teachers toward the present movement of educating handicapped students in the regular classroom, and (2) to investigate selected variables that may affect the attitude and acceptance behaviors, in order to have the findings of the study serve as one basis for future curriculum planning in teacher education programs as well as for in-service program development for local education systems.

Differentiated curricula for gifted and talented students are necessities for any school district which purports to serve the educational needs of all of its student population. During the 1980-81 school year, the Mt. Zion School District, Mt. Zion, Illinois, conducted a thorough investigation and began a total revision of its district-wide gifted program. Using a systems analysis approach to problem solving, a selected committee of administrators and professional staff conducted a needs assessment in order to determine the actual value of its existing program. This study investigated a six-variable model of the cognitive structure of psychometrically gifted adolescents. In this model, Concept Attainment and Problem Finding were the dependent variables, and IQ, Achievement Motivation, Anxiety, and Innovation were the independent variables. Previous research suggests that emotional or affective variables such as Achievement Motivation, Anxiety, and Innovation strongly influence the type of problem solving necessary in Piagetian formal operational thinking. Research also indicates that the formal operational stage is a necessary but insufficient condition for a type of cognitive process termed "Problem Finding." Thus, Problem Finding was suggested as a fifth stage of cognitive development. …

This investigation focused upon the academic and social achievement of identified gifted and talented students who participated in a special humanities program conducted within a traditional junior high school environment. Eighty-two students, ranging from the seventh grade through their sophomore year in college, returned questionnaires lending credence to the hypothesis that these youngsters generally continue to sustain their achievement level as they progress through life. Students' attitudes regarding gifted identification, motivation, peer relationships, and program preparation were discussed.

This field work experience for the Specialist degree in Educational Administration at Eastern Illinois University involved a study of the gifted program in Charleston, Illinois, seen from two aspects: the state reimbursed gifted program as well as the local school's independent effort for its top students. The writer's method of inquiry combined library research and 40 interviews with teachers, administrators, and authorities on gifted students.

The Optimum Learning in Regular Classrooms Project is an adoptive-adaptive ESEA Title IV-C project with two purposes: (1) to provide more effective educational service to children with special needs through training the mainstream teacher to diagnose these special needs as well as implement solutions for such children on an ongoing basis, and (2) to provide more efficient support services to the mainstream teacher in his/her efforts to meet the special needs of exceptional children, whether handicapped or gifted.

The Central Midwest Educational Research's (CEMREL) Elements of Mathematics Program (EM) for gifted students was piloted in Tidewater for five years. Before deciding whether to continue or expand the program, it was necessary to devise a method of evaluating the program's effectiveness. In the process of this evaluation, two separate com­parisons were made:

- a lateral comparison between an experimental and an existing control class over a period of four years, and

- a longitudinal comparison of successive experimental classes over a four year period.

Eighty Caucasian fourth and fifth grade boys and girls were matched according to grade, sex and Total IQ on the California Short-Form Test of Mental Maturity. The Wechsler Intelligence Scale of Children was then given under four randomly assigned incentive conditions: 1) Tokens contingent upon correct responses, 2) Praise contingent upon correct responses, 3) Non-Contingent Tokens and 4) Non-Contingent Praise.

An analysis of variance of the Verbal, Performance and Full Scall IQs showed no significant differences between incentives. Similarly, comparisons by grade and sex indicated no significant differences.

Essentially, all programs are enrichment programs. They are designed to provide for individual work, for differentiated assignments, for greater depth of learning, or for more rapid pace. Each seeks to enrich by providing more or different learning opportunities. For practical purposes programs can be categorized into the following three classifications: (1) enrichment within the regular classroom, (2) acceleration, and (3) segregation.
